I couldn't agree more. My wife and I have never been the type to hand our kids anything. We could give them whatever they want but we taught them that they have to earn things in life.
There is nothing in life thats as sweet as being rewarded for hard work!!!
I can only hope that my kids will take with them what they have been taught and pass it on to their own kids. I'm pretty sure they will.
I always have my eye on them though and I think that is where a lot of todays parents fail. They give their kids to much rope. I'm not saying you have to tie them to a tree, but there are controls that need to be met. It doesn't take a kid very long to get off the good path if they are left to fend for themselves.
You are right when you say that they can make it even when faced with great adversity. But if I stay on top of things and help them through life with any luck they won't have to make those choices.
