If they had offered him a 2 year deal at $5M plus incentives he would have jumped at it in a heart beat.
The 1 year deal put added pressure on him to produce or he wouldn't be around the following year to open up the new stadium.
Sorry but you want to go out with the old and come in with the new you have to win.
Cashman made some interesting comments,

I believe cashman's input had a lot to do with the decision to offer Joe a 1 year deal. The guy's the GM he hands him the best team money can buy and no winner in 7 years.
