It is an ethics issue. The COI is a required statement, and by not being forthcoming about their affiliations, they send the message that they were hiding something. They should have disclosed and let their comments stand on their own merit. BTW, I am not the one who needs to address those comments. They were addressed by one of the authors of the JAMA articl.
