Both government and opposition claim victory
Opposition says it has 73% of voting tallies
Independent exit polls point to landslide opposition win

US, Brazil and others call for transparency in count
Maduro victory would extend socialist rule

CARACAS/MARACAIBO/MARACAY, Venezuela, July 29 (Reuters) - Venezuela opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said on Monday the country's opposition has 73.2% of the voting tallies from Sunday's election, allowing it to prove election results it says give it a victory.

The national electoral authority has proclaimed incumbent President Nicolas Maduro the winner of the vote, giving him a third term in office and extending 25 years of socialist party rule.

But independent pollsters called that result implausible, and opposition leaders and foreign observers urged the electoral authority to release vote tallies.

OMOLIVES, Why would you be not sure

"Speaking of progressive...has anyone been watching Venezuela , recently????
It's blowing up. Not sure if I can mention that here...just FYI. I have been following it pretty hard this past Month.
"

if you could say anything about Venezuela you wanted to here. Can't think of any reason except some baseless imagining in your own mind. Surely you wouldn't consider we deliberately avoid stuff which in some people's minds may reflect poorly on our positions. Sheesh, that's more a conservative trait i'd suggest, would think you would know that. Anyway, you should never again think whatever you were thinking when you said what you said there, not about any political figure .. anywhere.

On 14 April 2013, Nicolás Maduro was elected President of Venezuela, narrowly defeating opposition
candidate Henrique Capriles with just 1.5% of the vote separating the two candidates.

For you, and for the fun of it, i wandered starting at 2013, and basically randomly picked mostly one a year for you:

conix -- Chavez was a corrupt chump, then Maduro far worse -- hardly any favorites of ours; not just the corruption but even more cuz we're not into authoritarians regardless of (attemptedly) legitimating ideology -- and at least note things there were able to change course via an election
P - before Chavez, Venezuela had quite the history of such governance under hard-right types/ideology -- hopefully this new government will not revert to anything like that and move things forward into a more genuinely democratic and rule of law future

At the breaking point…
Uncommon Wisdom Daily
[...]Venezuela is at a breaking point. Its citizens are protesting, just blocks from the presidential palace, demanding food and access to running water. And Chavez’s successor, Nicolas Maduro, is losing support of the poor — the very segment that keeps him in power. A recall-referendum against the leader has begun.
P - As a diversion to the rampant food shortages and 700%+ inflation, Maduro has pointed at the U.S. as the instigators of this unrest. And he calls on Venezuelans to prepare for an imminent invasion by the evil force to the north.

THE BIG QUESTION AS THE U.N. GATHERS : WHAT TO MAKE OF TRUMP?
[...]Previewing the week, Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster, the president’s national security adviser, said Mr. Trump would stress “sovereignty and accountability.” Sovereignty is a term that appeals to American conservatives skeptical about the United Nations. It is also a term, however, used by autocrats like Presidents Bashar al-Assad of Syria and Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela to reject interference by outside powers as they crush opposition.

Yay, Authoritarianism is making a comeback. Here's the time-tested way to defeat it
"Fascism will be on our doorstep if we don’t act immediately: Yale historian"
[...]Modern authoritarians rely on repression, intimidation, corruption and co-optation to consolidate their power. The dictator’s handbook .. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/dictators-handbook-bruce-bueno-de-mesquita/1101004050 .. mastered by Orban in Hungary, Erdogan in Turkey, Maduro in Venezuela, Zuma in South Africa, Duterte in the Philippines and Trump here provides the traditional tactics: attack journalists, blame dissent on foreigners and “paid protestors,” scapegoat minorities and vulnerable groups, weaken checks on power, reward loyalists, use paramilitaries, and generally try to reduce politics to a question of friends and enemies, us and them.

Trump has no idea what he’s doing
[...]No one can have any confidence that this administration has thought out a step-by-step plan for anything. Look at the situation in Venezuela. There, the administration took a page from the Obama playbook — multilateralism — and assembled an impressive coalition of nations to demand President Nicolás Maduro’s ouster. But the effort to depose Maduro has failed, and he retains the support of the powerful military. Now what?

THE REAL TRUMP FOREIGN POLICY: STOKING THE G.O.P. BASE
Why else would he pursue so many policies in Latin America that do not serve the national interest?

[...]Not content to bank only on the Cuban community in Florida, Mr. Trump is also courting the state’s many Venezuelan immigrants, who justifiably detest the government of President Nicolas Maduro in Caracas. To hasten Mr. Maduro’s exit, the Trump administration has rightly joined with regional and international partners to impose sanctions against Mr. Maduro, his government and cronies, and to recognize the opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, as interim president.
P - But, because Mr. Trump’s Cuba announcement will alienate the United States from the very coalition of allied countries that we need to stay united on Venezuela, his real goal appears to be something else: stoking his base. That’s why Mr. Trump trumpets the bogus threat of Venezuelan-style “socialism” invading America through the Democratic Party. Similarly, he periodically threatens military intervention in Venezuela, which is music to the ears of many exiles in South Florida. Despite what Mr. Trump says, there is no practical military option for deposing Mr. Maduro. Bombing Caracas would kill countless innocents and a ground invasion would meet determined resistance from the Venezuelan military.

Here’s the right lesson liberals should learn from Scandinavian ‘socialism’
[...]Red-baiting appears to be a crucial part of President Trump’s reelection campaign. He regularly accuses Democrats of wanting to turn America into another Venezuela. In the State of the Union address, he went straight from denouncing the Maduro regime to proclaiming, “Here, in the United States, we are alarmed by new calls to adopt socialism in our country.” On the present trajectory, it won’t be long before Trump, like a latter-day Richard Nixon, will be accusing Sen. Kamala D. Harris (D.-Calif.) of being “pink right down to her underwear.”
P - Having emigrated to the United States as a small boy from the Soviet Union, I am instinctively suspicious of socialism and inveterately opposed to communism. But it is cretinous to conflate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I.-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D.-N.Y.) with Nicolás Maduro. They may all call themselves socialists, but that’s all they have in common. Trump’s attack makes as much sense as suggesting that the Democratic Party is made up of Kim Jong Un loyalists because the official name of North Korea is the “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.”

Well, If You Like Corruption, Hatred, & Disease, Boy Have I Got a Blog For You
[...]And Sultan Spraytan demonstrated his Change the Channel I’m Bored doctrine in an interview with Axios, figuring he may as well meet with Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, which would totally upend years of U.S. policy, but hey, maybe he’ll get a really cool challenge coin out of it.
P - Anyway, Florida Republicans rapped him on the knuckles hard enough that he walked the offer back, but the point is the President doesn’t know, understand, or believe anything. Anything at all. This is one more item in Joe Biden’s favor, I think; I like how he has knowledge and experience when it comes to foreign policy…also, he picks out pants that fit.

Yeah... transparency. You can tell by all those blistering exposes the great journalist Assange has written about the Putin "administration". Or about Trump for that matter. I really admire the way he's gone after Orban and Lukashenko. He really takes it to Maduro too, eh? He's just a tower of fearless journalistic integrity.

The authoritarian playbook doesn't change, whatever color the flag you wave.

There's no difference between the Maduro and Orban regimes, and it's pretty much the administration Trump envisions as well. Get power, consolidate power and don't relinquish power.

(the red and black flags evoke the symbols of communism vs fascism)

Always a favorite of mine

Spanish Bombs
Song by The Clash

Spanish songs in Andalucía
The shooting sites in the days of '39
Oh, please, leave the ventana open
Federico Lorca is dead and gone
Bullet holes in the cemetery walls
The black cars of the Guardia Civil
Spanish bombs on the Costa Rica
I'm flying in a DC 10 tonight

Spanish bombs, yo te quiero infinito
Yo te quiero, oh mi corazón
Spanish bombs, yo te quiero infinito
Yo te quiero, oh mi corazón

Spanish weeks in my disco casino
The freedom fighters died upon the hill
They sang the red flag
They wore the black one
But after they died it was Mockingbird Hill
Back home the buses went up in flashes
The Irish tomb was drenched in blood
Spanish bombs shatter the hotels
My senorita's rose was nipped in the bud

Spanish bombs, yo te quiero infinito
Yo te quiero, oh mi corazón
Spanish bombs, yo te quiero infinito
Yo te quiero, oh mi corazón

The hillsides ring with "Free the people"
Or can I hear the echo from the days of '39?
With trenches full of poets
The ragged army, fixin' bayonets to fight the other line
Spanish bombs rock the province
I'm hearing music from another time
Spanish bombs on the Costa Brava
I'm flying in on a DC 10 tonight

Spanish bombs, yo te quiero infinito
Yo te quiero, oh mi corazón
Spanish bombs, yo te quiero infinito
Yo te quiero, oh mi corazón
Oh mi corazón, oh mi corazón

Spanish songs in Andalucía, Mandolina, oh mi corazón
Spanish songs in Granada, oh mi corazón
Oh mi corazón, oh mi corazón
Oh mi corazón
