Clearly, DS was attempting to discredit A. Lincoln, and might I suggest impugn his motives, despite the statement being widely attributed to the16th President. Of course the question as to whether it was really said by Lincoln or not remains an important unsettled historical question. But that’s the point, it’s not disproven either,
