Okay, from AIChat

“Abraham Lincoln allegedly made the statement about fooling people during a speech in 1858, in which he was engaging in a debate with Stephen A. Douglas. This statement has been widely attributed to him, although its exact origin and context have been subject to some debate.”

Clearly, DS was attempting to discredit A. Lincoln, and might I suggest impugn his motives, despite the statement being widely attributed to the16th President. Of course the question as to whether it was really said by Lincoln or not remains an important unsettled historical question. But that’s the point, it’s not disproven either,

Next thing I expect is the message board will question whether or not Washington really chopped down the cherry tree.
