I believe Caremark took over prescription management for Anthem BCBS FEP plans. Express scripts use to be their PBM. At least that’s what I remember from my recent formulary searches. I don’t think that BCBS is the one pushing this change. I could be wrong. BCBS is comprised of 34 independent locally operated/regional companies. Together, they manage a lot of Medicare, commercial, individual, and state and federal insurance plans. Most insurers have their own prescription review boards and decide on what to cover or not cover. Not all BCBS plans have dumped Vascepa nor has CVS Caremark. It’s hard to know the extent of this issue because not all formularies have been released for 2023. I haven’t done a lot of digging but what I noticed is that it’s mostly, if not all, Federal Employee plans. In other words, it seems like the prescription review board and decision makers for the Federal Employees Plan have decided not to cover V. BCBS is just managing their prescriptions and formularies etc. I don’t believe it absolves BCBS of liability since they’re managing the prescriptions and formularies for FEP. Are the FEP employees just ignorant of GV’s skinny label or do they feel they have the blessing of the federal government and judicial system. AMRN needs to be made aware of these changes ASAP and they need to warn the responsible parties of the issues of infringement ASAP. Hope this helps.
