I don’t think many appreciate exactly what the situation is. Suppose a climate scientist came up with a computer model that correctly produced results for the climate over the last five centuries, but atmospheric carbon dioxide was not a factor.
How much traction, publicity, or attention would he get. None. It completely goes against the consensus of scientists. The consensus controls the publications, research funds, and majority of news releases.
Now consider Alzheimer’s. The original research producing the ‘smoking gun’ for the cause of Alzheimer’s was published in 2006. It was only shown to be fraudulent this summer. What has happened over the last sixteen years? Students just beginning college in that year were were taught the ‘certainty’ of amyloid plaque causation of Alzheimer’s - and nothing else. Every student following them have been taught same thing. Many of those first students now have had their doctorates for over five years. Some may have their own labs, been published, and perhaps are recognized as an expert in the field of Alzheimer’s research. One of the co-authors of that original paper is now at the NIH, handing out grants for Alzheimer’s research. Guess what theory those who get the grants research.
Sixteen years is a long time to have been invested in a theory, and I don’t mean money. Careers, reputations, success, dreams of awards and prizes (Nobel, perhaps?) are all on the line. Imagine waking up one day hearing that the last sixteen years of your life have been a waste. That also goes for investors who have sunk millions of dollars into that theory.
I’m not surprised at all that Anavex is still under the radar. Too many people have too much to lose if Anavex is right. Don’t let any doubt creep in. Amyloid plaque causes Alzheimer’s. They must keep believing it, and the press must keep reporting it. They can’t afford to be wrong.
