If you live in (for example) Portland, your electricity is produced over the entire west half of the country. It is a single huge electric circuit.

Never looked up data, but I am sure the Western grid is far more eco friendly than the Eastern and Texas grids. More hydro and less coal.

The other thing that really works for electric cars is the regenerative breaking. When in city traffic, you often accelerate then slow back down with the brakes. In an electric car, the latter can right back into the "gas tank".
