Mourning doves are feeder hogs. They may look sedate but when one sits in front of the feeder, they bristle and chase off whoever wants to get by to eat. Until it's either outnumbered by a couple blackbirds or a flicker (woodpecker) comes along.
You'd be surprised. Put a sock out and give them 10 days to find it. The drab bird in that link is a female house finch. Many females are drab, camouflaged for nesting.
