#219632 RE: Evaluate #219626

Great posts today! And Maverick’s post may be today’s winner (and that’s after some GREAT posts!). And, finally, something I can comment on!! Evaluate, yes. Yes. I have for years altered my eating, back and forth, if you will, between good and, well, less good. Yes. Huge differences! Stay away from the crap. Sugar is the enemy. Refined crappy carbs are the enemy. Eat as Maverick laid it out, and you will notice incredible changes. But, but, but, you need to be disciplined. You need to be disciplined. Maybe a cheat day, once every two weeks (maybe). If someone offers you a sugar candy, you need to (in your head/not out loud!) look at them like they are nuts, as if they offered you poison, and (politely) decline. As they say, abs are made in the kitchen. As to overall health, disease, the jury is out/clearly no question. Cut the junk carbs/sugar. Eat healthy. Maverick is spot on. Yes. I eat this way (mostly). Yes. Maverick is spot on. Best. Start today. :)

Evaluate, may I recommend you look into intermittent fasting . There are many benefits to it. Here are some resources for your information. I am on a 16/8 fasting schedule and though not on a full keto diet, my intake is mainly fat, protein and low carb. The first two weeks is tough but after that when your body has adapted you hardly feel hungry because you're training your body to use fat as fuel.

Being AHEARD of the CURVE or Rectifying for it

re Evaluate:

I am interested in eating/drinking healthier. I suspect that you mention the above book because you like it. Have you adjusted your own intake as a result, and have you noticed any improvements? Anything in particular that made a big difference for you?
(I have already cut out all sodas for several decades, and have tried to cut back on portion sizes and be more aware of nutrition labels and choices, but I still have much improvement to make. As a short term goal I would like to make some changes that could result in weight loss.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!

As we age, with metabolism declining gradually from 30 yrs of age.... we do not need to eat as much!

To answer your question directly: No.
Each of the many NYTimes best seller books I read with regard to Health did NOT have a profound impact upon my health.

The reason WHY is because I already had a pretty good diet to begin with. I am a born and raised NYC Chinese American that came from a poor family eating rice, vegetables and mostly chicken versus red meat. And I never succumbed to the American processed food companies offering even though on sporadic occasions I enjoyed the Real Coca Cola or Ring Ding along with 20 yrs of going to twice weekly obligatory corporate full course working luncheons as either a Wall St analyst or money manager. Having the 3 hr daily challenging commutation via the canyons of either lower Manhattan or midtown Manhattan and especially the NYC subways helped offset the above! Same can be said about all of Europe daily rigors of accessing public transit unlike that of the reliance upon the US car for door to door service without Mon-Fri physical exertions.

The rare exceptions for deviating from a disciplined healthy diet for me:
1)When either in Paris or Amalfi Coast and seeing a 100+ yr old bakery shop:
I will buy 3 dessert or baked goods items each night for 4 days/nights stay.
2) Buying bars of Aldi's Dark Chocolate w/Almonds for the flavonoids which is heart healthy.
3) Having Aldi's Triple Dark Chocolate cake sporadically.

Also I'm a pretty good cook and use lots of healthy spices: even Indian ones along with lots of garlic and ginger.

Although I did NOT need to read these following widely read health best selling books:
1)Dr Joel Fuhrman’s Eat to Live; for an overview: (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2221066/Winter-health-Immunity-boosting-diet-micronutrients-Dr-Joel-Fuhrmans-book-Super-Immunity.html)
2)Dr. Alejandro Junger: Clean Gut and
3) Dr. Daniel Amen’s.Change Your Brain, Change Your Life
,... along with countless daily immersions in health articles, all of the above clearly upgraded and refined my diet to the healthiest continually.

So Evaluate I, have always, give or take 5-10 lbs, have always been at the ideal Body Mass Index along with having low blood pressure and a very strong immune system that has been acid tested TWICE. 1) Aunt hosts Thanksgiving dinner of 16, where I was one of six in the kitchen preparing that meal because Aunt was stricken with the FLU. Everyone for the next two-three weeks were under medication whereas I was the Lone Ranger without even a sniffle. 2) Last year’s Flu epidemic was deadly: 9,000 deaths where the vaccine was only 35% effective. Can’t even remember when I last even had a flu shot. Have not had a need to see a doctor or a hospital for the last 35 years! Well I was stricken for 3 full days and nights with the Flu and overcame it naturally despite having weak joints etc.

However a testament to the positive impact of APPLYING all that is espoused came in the unbelievable weigh loss (from a STOCKY to a trim athlete physique)and restoration of energy to a protege a Master’s degreed Software Programmer full scholarship graduate of Carnegie Mellon University who was on their tennis team. BTW his parents are US Gov't Mexican American border guards (Mexican diet!) I met and played against him even though I was 25 yrs older one Summer and we bonded beyond just tennis into a Mentor/Protege relationship that also impacted his younger brother. Suffice it to say BOTH brothers are working in Hedge Fund type jobs due to our interactions covering 5 plus yrs.

Hope that helps.

DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS
