#5383 RE: Zeev Hed #5375

Zeev Hed--Good for you! I want you to "remain deep in the green". So be careful with WAVE. The major gorillas are cooperating more than you might suspect to finally launch Trusted Web Services in a very major way. And WAVE is part of that cooperating, and very combustible mix. WAVE's role will surprise you.

If I were you, I'd start my WAVE DD from the very beginnings. Doing so, will give you a few solid clues as to why WAVE stands alone, and way, way ahead, of any potential competition, in the Trusted Computing arena. Here's one clue that helps explains WHY: WAVE was given a head start, with a little help from HP. Trusted Computing as we know it today, begins here.

HP AND WAVE SYSTEMS TO BRING TRUST
AND SECURITY TO THE PC

Open Platform Enables Secure Applications and E-commerce Transactions

PALO ALTO and SAN JOSE, CA, Oct. 27, 1998 -- Hewlett-Packard Company and Wave Systems Corp. today announced a technology creating a "trusted client" system, one that provides an inexpensive, standards-based platform for running secure applications and protecting important data and digital identities in individual PCs.

Endowing the PC with trust and security provides customers with a client-based solution for e-commerce and Internet security, and elevates the personal computer to an important new role in the evolving digital economy.

The trusted-client system, jointly developed by HP and Wave Systems during the past six months, will be the basis for a new generation of e-commerce, and security applications and services. It is based on Wave Systems’ secure e-commerce architecture and HP’s VerSecure security management framework. The trusted-client system is an open, programmable hardware- and software-based device that creates a fully exportable, secure and trusted environment within the PC.

The first implementation of the trusted-client technology (see separate announcement issued by Wave Systems) is the EMBASSY E-Commerce System. This implementation of the trusted-client system will be included on motherboard chip sets from leading PC component suppliers SMSC and ITE.

"As an established leader in PC manageability, HP plans to enhance its HP Vectra PC line even further by developing powerful, flexible security solutions for corporate customers," said Jean-Luc Meyer, marketing manager for HP’s Commercial Computing Division. "The new, trusted-client technology offers an exciting opportunity to make simplified, secure corporate computing a reality."

NEC Computer Systems Division (CSD), a leading manufacturer of computer products and solutions, has selected the EMBASSY E-Commerce System to provide the trusted-client capability for inclusion in select 1999 models. Other PC manufacturers also are expected to integrate trusted-client technology into their product lines during the next year.

Delivering an Inexpensive Security Solution with a Trusted-client System

Secure electronic transactions typically are performed on centralized servers requiring multiple layers of firewalls, network encryption or remote authentication of the user’s identity before being processed. The trusted-client system, embedded in PC hardware, provides an inexpensive solution with strong encryption that is more secure and less complex than current software-based approaches. The user can then perform independent transactions, store personal and sensitive information, and execute applications in a secure environment. Trusted-client systems can be embedded in peripherals, set-top boxes, modems, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and other client devices.

A trusted client requires hardware that creates a "system within a system," complete with separate processor, memory, real-time clock and unique ID. Integrating this hardware with VerSecure security management and the EMBASSY architecture provides the breakthrough to enable a broad range of new secure electronic-commerce applications, including services delivery, network authentication, transactional security and metering of digital content.

Users worldwide can benefit from the new technology, particularly those in the consumer, government, defense, commerce and financial-services industries, where trust and security are required.

Just as the original PC revolutionized computing, the trusted-client system will be the basis for a new generation of user-based e-commerce and security applications and services.
