#10616 RE: sgolds #10610

sgolds, flash just killed IBM mini-disk, 1 Gb HDD that fits in compact flash socket. It was very successeful product for few years. I wonder when muni-laptops will come with flash instead of HDD? If you make 4 Gb system disk C: as flash, the additional HDD on D: will be sleeping most of the time. That will not save a lot of power, but will increase speed and also make laptop more shock-resistive. If mobil Linux becomes more popular than system disk size requirements may be reduced down to 1 Gb, so technically that can be done right now. The reason is, Linux can use more fine grain separation between system and user disk, so size requirements on the system disk can be much less. In Windows world, most people install MS office on the disk C: and will call support if it will not fit.

SGOLDS,
Thank you very much for the links. What I've read so far sounds very intriguing... low cost, up to 6 bits per cell, stackable, potential terehertz speeds? Wow. Would like to see a product announcement though.

sgolds, MRAM was one such attempt, I haven't heard much from them recently.

IBM and Infineon had an optimistic joint press release in June.

and it's been fun reading Coatue's info. They kinda remind me JS III :)
