Another hint...

Microsoft's flackage in Billboard refers to Zune as an 'entertainment service'.

One of the Zune employees blogs: So what’s Zune? It’s Microsoft’s new, holistic approach to music and entertainment. And yes, this year, we’ll be releasing a device as part of the project.

The device is an integrated part of a 'holistic approach' to an entertainment service. That sure sounds like one can't take just one part...

See, Microsoft is late to the party, and is trying to introduce their product in a maturing market. They aren't going to sell another MP3 player. They're going to sell a 'holistic approach to music and entertainment', building 'a community of folks discovering new music and entertainment.' Presumably the crystals, little pyramids, and other New Age trappings will be optional.

It's not a music player, but an entry into a new transformational community. Only $100 down, and easy payments of $14.95 a month forever. And no E-meters or Thetans to worry about. Such a deal...

That sounds plausible

Nothing like a good Microsoft (or Apple) lock-in. Doesn't everyone need a good pet rock every now and then? :-)
