According to American Funds and Morningstar it is a front end load. Here is their schedule:
Less than $25,000-------------- 5.75% 3.75%

$100,000 but less than $250,000 3.50 3.50
$250,000 but less than $500,000 2.50 2.50
$500,000 but less than $750,000 2.00 2.00

$1 million and above 0.00* 0.00*
The first column is for growth funds and the second column is for bond funds.
The only funds that don't have a front load are the reinvested dividends.
The dividend is about 2%. They take 5.75% of every dollar you put in there on day one as their "fee". After that they are pretty reasonable, the expense ratio is only 0.65%
