i would consider this akin too speculative inflation, as housing cools and people realize we're not getting the general inflation, these commodities should correct

on another subject i think gold's run is do to "fear mongering" and people's worry about war and catasrophe, which we hear about on the radio and tv over and over again fwiw

I am a General Contractor, my electrical subcontractor has said
a roll of romex wiring for residential construction has gone from $25 a year ago to $125 at this time. In fact many materials costs will rise significantly from the time you put a qoute together for a job and the time you purchase for the job.
Most wood products had a huge run up last summer with Katrina and of course they have for the most part remained at those levels.
