It's a statement of the obvious to say "Apple can do what it wants". The question is, have they made a smart decision?
It's Apple's "right" to make the minimum entry price for a notebook with the hardware to fully support iLife and OS X at $1,449 if it so chooses. Just as it's your right to offer no opinion one way or the other on whether that's a wise move. And mine to offer an opinion and line of reasoning for why I think it's not particularly wise.
One thing I know ... when there's this much defensiveness and apologia, it's fairly obvious a sensitive issue has been hit.
