As soon as they could get some units, however small, that met clock rate criteria, they did the demo. It is called a face-saving event. It doesn't have anything to do with being smart, it has everything to do with reading between the lines. Intel needs to demonstrate a superior server product. They can't do it 65nm vs. 90nm, they lose. So they extrapolate.
Sounds like a great excuse for AMD's crummy execution on quad core. How come those idiots down in Sunnyvale can't seem to get a quad core demo ahead of Intel? They've been supposedly working on it for months now. Maybe they just showed dead wafers that zero yielded on their broken 65nm process. No, I know: they took chipdesigner's advice and fired the engineers so they could afford more lawyers. Brilliant.
