I think most of them use flow through without any filtration. The ones that do use biofilters still require large water changes. The depletion of non-specific trace minerals is probably one of the main reasons for the water change. If they could specify the minerals, they probably could add them to the feeds and change less water, but I don't think anybody has the feed down well enough to do that. The other end of that, is the accumulation of excess trace minerals that would occur if the water isn't changed.

Neither problem has any serious impact on the environment, that I know of. The worst enviromentals come from flow through and cage growth techniques. The waste flows into the environment unprocessed.
