Re: AMD clearly intends to fight this case in the court of public opinion. I never thought AMD would stoop this low, especially when they have so much going for them in terms of Opteron and Hypertransport

If anything, this will create a division between realists who believe in free market competition and idealists who follow the notion that everything should be equal and fair. But I don't think it will change much overall. After all, most people who follow technology have already made up their mind on this issue, and everyone else doesn't care.

The only thing this will manage to do is make the 'droids even more rabid and passionate for their cause, but even that will die off over time when Intel leapfrogs AMD in performance and they can no longer argue that AMD has the "superior product".

And anyone who believes this game of leapfrog will not continue forever is just kidding themselves. I think AMD sees this about to happen, and that's why they stooped low enough to file this lawsuit. It's actually one of my pet-peeves when an aggressive person or entity plays the victim.

It's clear that AMD has been unsuccessful ramping the Opteron to the market share they wanted, but that's because they are trying to beat Intel at their own game by copying their marketing techniques, copying their branding techniques, and even copying their positioning. But all these don't say "AMD Me" as much as they say "AMD, Me Too". It's not Intel strong-arming that keeps AMD down, it's the fact that Intel knows how to play the game much better than AMD, and AMD has never attempted to break free(*) and do their own thing.

* By this I mean on the business side. AMD's technical expertise obviously allowed them to break free and design a superior server solution. But eventually, Intel will leapfrog even this, and AMD has done little in the mean time to cement their gains in the market.
