...the wealth represented by that money...

I think this hits the nail on the head! The sum total of ones assets is usually represented by the current 'value' of all the individual parts (stocks, bonds, funds, cash, real estate, etc.) as reflected by the current price. But what price is fair? High, low, close, median? And we could even go further into what currency (USD, Euro, Yen, Gold?).

For my purposes, what is really important is the cash flow that is generated by the individual investments. And there are multiple ways to generate that cash flow (trades, dividends, interest, options, futures, rent, etc.).

I like AIM, because it tends to accumulate more shares of a stock over time, while taking some profits with trades as the price of the stock moves. I have found that I can also make a little more cash by writing covered calls on a conservative portion of the stock on hand that AIM will not likely sell in time frame of the call option. It is even better if the company pays a bit of dividends.

I like X_dev because it seems to be able to capture more trading profits if you tune it properly and you can stay on top of the position. But, I find tha X_dev is not very suitable to my use of covered options, because it is much more likely to sell all of the shares to capture a maximum amount of trading profits.

Both methods serve my purposes well, but I must match the techniques I will use to the investment I pick, the time I wish to put into the specific investment, and the cash flow I need to produce from the investment. Then there are the core holdings versus the speculative holdings, which is a whole discussion in itself.

I think I will make a resolution to get more disciplined next year!
