As an experienced climber who has scaled peaks even more imposing than McTrivia, you are unconcerned by this warning. Not to be taken lightly, though, AMS is one malady that can be life-threatening to mountaineers. What is another name for this medical condition?

Altitude sickness, also acute mountain sickness (AMS), usually occurs at heights of over 8,000 feet/2,400 meters, where less oxygen is available and air pressure is low. The best treatment is a swift descent. Symptoms include headache, dizziness, and nausea, leading some to mistake AMS for the flu or a hangover. Severe cases can lead to potentially lethal pulmonary or cerebral edema. To prevent AMS, mountaineers are encouraged to ascend gradually and get sufficient rest, allowing their bodies to acclimatize.
