New Wave

Well put, but I don't consider much controversy between the positions. Enterprise and Longhorn REQUIRE 1.2. That's a given down the road.

Also a given (almost always) is introduce at High End and move down a level with each new introduction. Dell will sell 610s and 810s with tpms as long as they sell, but they will introduce (I'll invent a number) 680s and 880s with 1.2 at a higher price and then offer the other as an option as they are doing with the 600 and 800. The six months until 1.2 is a blink of the eye and purchase will depend on how long the upgrade cycle is for a particular enterprise or individual. I just bought my first new machine in five years without a tpm because I think I'll replace it in late 2006 with a Longhorn 1.2 machine and give this to the grandkids as a Wave surfing present.

I don't believe Dell expects to sell that many 1.1 machines and I do think that they waited to come on board JUST IN TIME to position themselves for 1.2 and Longhorn. Of course, I could be wrong, but that's how I'm viewing it.

I will also comment because it hasn't been mentioned in a while that ETS will have a Wave UPGRADE button on every Dell sold with ETS. I will assume that Michael Dell bought the SKS argument that the Boxes should not be revenue dead on arrival, but should become future sources of revenue for the box makers. HP meanwhile Invents and IBM doesn't see the profit potential in on-going revenue.
