Curious about cookies.....If I visit a friends personal website, should I automatically get a cookie?

If so, how/why? Could it be the host company doing it for stats maybe?

The friend has not intentionally enabled anything, as far as he knows, to collect cookies....in fact, knows nothing about them other than they are everywhere.
