But VRTX doesn't have any clinical data in hand yet to make this call do they? Perhaps they just saw something pre-clinically that caused them to drop the compounds.

Just to be clear: VRTX has not officially dropped VX813 and VX985; rather, I surmised that these compounds are effectively dead for the reasons mentioned in #msg-42917596.

Regarding the safety/tolerability of these drugs, VRTX does not yet have human data but they almost certainly have animal data, so they could have seen something troubling. However, I’m inclined to think the key issue here is timing (#msg-43001664).
