You can get them closer in but we've been going 3-5 miles out to 150-170'. It's a big flat area, mostly sand but gravel on one side. It's in the gravel that we've been finding the bigger ones.

We've mostly been using big swim baits, but also octopus and big herring. Generally the swim baits have been outfishing the real bait. My guide friend has spent 19 years perfecting his halibut fishing and he swears by them.

White has been the best but some days they prefer the others.

We use 1-2lb weight, two swivels attached to them, one to the main line, the other to a 18-24" 100lb mono leader.
