The parable of the monkeys

This story has been attributed to the UCLA Medical Center Research Department. Probably not them but I'm blaming it on them anyway.

Seems a research project involved putting three monkeys in a room. Then a bunch of bananas were suspended from the ceiling light fixture in the center of the room and a wire attached to them. Next, a ladder was placed under the bananas.

Well, one of the monkeys climbed the ladder and grabbed the bananas and was knocked off the ladder by the electric shock. A while later, the second monkey climbed the ladder and received the same shock knocking him to the floor.

The third monkey wanted no part of the ladder or the bananas and stayed on the floor.

The next day, the researchers removed the third monkey and replaced him with another monkey. Seeing the bananas, the new monkey scampered toward the ladder only to be intercepted by the first two monkeys who, promptly whipped his azz. The first two monkeys would not allow the new monkey to climb the ladder.

The new monkey was replaced by a newer monkey the next day and soon went for the ladder getting his azz whipped too.

This procedure went on for several days, replacing old monkeys with new monkeys. Soon, the older monkeys got into not waiting for the new monkeys to climb the ladder and just started whipping the azzes of the new monkeys immediately when they were introduced to the room.

The researchers continued the project for several more cycles sometimes replacing the older monkeys. After a while the original monkeys were replaced too. Always with the same results. They tried removing the ladder. When replacing a monkey, the beatings continued. Then they tried removing the bananas, with the same results.

One day, a new monkey was introduced into the room and promptly got his beating by the other two monkeys. When it was over, he asked the other two monkeys. "Why the _ell did you whip my azz?"

The other two monkeys said, "Gee, we don't know. It's just the way things have always been done here."
