Those are great questions and God only knows I don't have the answers, only my own limits of 'comfortableness" with killing anyone who murders, regardless of their state of mind.

To me, the distinguishing factor between Yates and Smith is that Smith had a motive, covered up the crime, and lied like Hell. Yates was psychotic (she'd scratched '666' into her scalp, believed she was sending her children to Heaven before she could harm them).

I'd like to see a verdict called "Guilty and Insane", where the person is found guilty of the crime but it's acknowledged that they were nuts when they did it and instead of spending life in prison, they spend life in a locked psychiatric unit. With no possibility of parole.
