My mom, late 60's pushing 70, says the "good old days" were really not that good at all, and worse for many families. Abusive fathers (the strong silent type?) would beat there families -- and women stayed because society provided few options for divorced. undereducated women. Families had more children than they could ever reasonably provide for, and with little or no support system for the mother, primary caregiver...
