Almost all patents are rejected the first time, especially if it is completely new and not just a small derivation of an existing concept, it is pretty standard. The patent applicant and patent examiner then usually have a sit down and get into the details.

I do not own any patents myself, but two family members of mine have 5 between them. (non relating fields)
