I tried to place an IRA trade for AMRN through Schwab and I couldn't do it myself.


Yup. And if it is a reasonable limit order and the price gaps up over at the opening, your choice is to call a second time and do the old fashioned phone/broker dance (at least nowadays you don't pay $100 for the privilege), or wait for the price to drift back down.
