I have no qualms about taking advantage of what is a completely legal practice for investors.   I don't like shorting at all, but it is legal so why not take what it makes available to investors long in a stock. 
If it were up to me, all investment would be to grow companies and their stock.  Funds would only invest to grow companies, but it's not up to me.  I hate the idea that hedge fund managers made billions in bonuses by bringing companies down. 
My point is that while I don't like it, it's legal and when offered, I think it's foolish to say no.  Why turn down money that others will gladly take, especially when short squeezes will eventually benefit longs as shorts are forced to cover sending the stock higher.
I know many don't like it, but many are having their stock taken without even knowing it.  Better to know, and to be paid, then simply let your broker take your shares.
