WATCH: Tesla car battery catches on fire in Montgomery County
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Crews in Montgomery County battled a car and trash fire Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters from the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service responded to 21700 Peachtree Road near Barnesville Road for a vehicle and debris fire at around 2:45 p.m.
There, they found a Tesla car battery that had “gone into thermal runaway.”
The battery was at the site of a house that was being demolished due to it burning down in a fire late last year.
The article just says Tesla battery but doesnt specify if its a battery pack from a Tesla; doesnt specify if it was an individual battery module or a whole pack. Due to lack of specificity i lean toward a battery module that you can get off ebay. Teslas modules work really well for battery storage for a DIY solar system. That said, they can experience thermal runaway due to EM radiation. You'd think if the battery simply got wet they'd have said so. According to another article this battery caught fire during the house fire in November making it likely that that this was EM radiation caused.
Officials said the battery briefly went into a 'thermal runaway' partially due to damage from the Nov. 11, 2024 house fire that destroyed the home and damaged several vehicles.
