There was never a time when self sufficiency in retirement income or medical care for the elderly was widely available. Life was “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short” for too many people over too many centuries.

The industrial age, with its economic cycles, necessitated more 'cake', more widely available, over a longer period of time.
