Readers of this board beware of misinformation regarding past royalties owed to IDCC. MSFT/Nok does not owe 3 billion dollars. The lawyers stated that because IDCC and Mr. Merritt stated they were seeking $1.00 a unit several years ago. Since that statement, FRAND, arbitration awards and licenses issued by the company have made the old dollar a phone mantra a myth. MSFT lawyers used the mantra to allow the antitrust allegations to get to trial. Based on unit sales of Nokia, a more realistic number falls closer to 600,000 or less. I believe that Nokia's behavior is the best fact situation to result in a willful and wanton finding by a jury which would allow the judge to award punitive damages. However, it would be hard to hold such a judgment on appeal now that MSFT is the main defendant. I would accept the 600,000 in a heartbeat with a license going forward. In my opinion, MSFT, GE, AMAZON, DISNEY, AT&T, QCOM and INTEL are all companies that could use IDCC technology and their engineers now and in the future. I believe there are entities on the Street that could cause a bidding war once the standards are set for 5g assuming IDCC contributions are intersected as anticipated. I do not believe any serious buyers will make a move until this happens. The 3 year period can be shortened fast if IDCC succeeds in the standards. I believe management would agree since their bonuses would be met according to the compensation plan language passed at the last ASM.
