I'm just very, very resistant to conspiracy theories. They'd only have let him off the hook if he could have provided useful--very useful--information about Edwards and the others. I don't think that was necessary. Edwards left a considerable paper trail. Urbie wasn't close to Turino and Visso. I doubt he knew any other bigtime criminals or what they were up to.
