Spot on, Austin. I think that a lot of the confusion about shorting hinges on the mistaken idea that the 'stock market' is a market of the kind you describe in your chocolate example... where, of course, it would be considered insane. However, it's now much more a casino than a market, so shorting just becomes another way for the house to make money. The only difference is that in an actual casino, a new way to bet is transparent in that there's no b.s. 'Good for gaming' theory advanced to defend it; It's simply another way for the house to take a cut. These sanctimonious Wall Street pr*cks who wrap themselves in the cloth of "market" virtue while selling stock they don't own in a simple effort to drive the share price down by massive dilution (creation of 'new' shares by borrowing and then selling again an existing share, potential 100% + dilution), increasing supply over demand, rumor, bashing... all in the name of "market efficiency"... to me they are beneath contempt.

When into that septic mix you add that many of the companies they attack aren't selling tootsie rolls or Kleenex, but are small bio's trying to alleviate the suffering of millions... well, the irony of the ethics and the hypocrisy on all levels is really just too much. If they really believe that exposure to legalized predation makes us all better and stronger, they should send their daughters and wives to ISIS. They'll undoubtedly be better for it.
