I can't stand the Norton Internet Security package but the Antivirus I have used on many PCs and like it.
As far as pirated goes they are not. They are just OEM which aren't supposed to be sold except with a new PC. They are labeled for the Middle East and Africa market which is doing good for Norton.
I bought Norton AV 2004 from an Amazon seller and he failed to mention that it was an OEM Version For sale in the Middle East and Africa. 95% of the text on the front of the CD is English. It says Not for retail / re-sale. I'm thinking that it will work in USA, but would like some confirmation from someone with experience if possible before opening the CD envelope.
Firefox users might want to share which extensions they like. I have made a web page for some of my friends who are trying to make the switch and it can be seen at http://pchousekeeping.com/firefox.php
Anybody ever come up with an answer to this one.
ZoneAlarm's free version is the best of the free. I have put it on many machines, but I use the Pro version.
Cassandra, If you try Opera go to http://tntluoma.com/opera/lover/7/01/ for a nice tutorial on how to set it up to fit your own style and needs.
Anyway I really like Opera and the ads are not much of a bother.
Has anybody been able to download and install SP2 via automatic update? I triggered the download when it became available yesterday but never had an install indication yet. There are 15 new SP2 Hotfix items in Add and Remove programs now. We have DSL and it seems that even with a staggered download it should be done.
Hey LC, I just tried Bazooka last night and it works. Hats off to somebody posting here that tipped me off. I forgot who.
Being first is great in the NBA, but not when comes to getting bombed. Had a client PC over here last night that kept me up till 1:00am with a browser hijacker that had no information out on the web. When it comes to this stuff I'm a follower and not a leader. When IE was opened it was unusable with the status bar twitching with attempts to go to searchfst.com. The only common thread I could find was; programs/Search Fast, searchfst.com, and c:\WINNT\srchfst.dll Cleaned them up, said a prayer, and it works. One happy CPA now, but I won't feel completely safe till some time passes on this one.
Concerning SpyBot--I don't know if it has been mentioned here but SpyBot came out with version 1.3 in May. I had Version 1.2 and when I would do a web update it would say my PC had the latest. I had to go get 1.3 and install it manually.
AdSubtract Pro 2.55 here.
AdSubtract is working for me.
excel, I'll be looking at it hard Monday. I see that he wants a reciprocal link, and there has to be a place for that. Maybe there needs to be a link page.
Your approach of "keeping it simple" and upfront
and honest manner to present who you are and what you can do
will help your "small venture [to] survive" and obtain both
a decent income and job satisfaction to benefit your family.
gotmilk, That is very kind of you. I hope you are a prophet, since the outlook here is not that rosy now.
Thanks for the tips on my layout. As many times as I've loaded it I never noticed that blank area. You look at something long enough and the obvious is unnoticed where your fresh look spotted it. Monday I'll try to fix that.
I'm playing with the just released version of Opera 7.51 today. Very zippy.
excel, That may be a good idea. I know that more linkage would be good, and I'll have to make time to work on it.
Hey gotmilk, Thanks for your interest. The Newsletter is more of an example of what can be than something that is. What I mean is that it shows someone interested in that what is possible. I can give them the passwords and let them see the control panel and how it works if they are interested in me installing one for them. I probably won't be publishing many newsletters.
As far as the pcdoctor.com set up I don't see that for me. I find that the PCs that get to me are so messed up with virus and spyware that it's hard to charge people for the amount of time it takes to clean them up right. They are mostly older computers and I advise them that with low prices of today's machines that it's not wise to spend a lot on an older one.
It's still amazing how many people are still not listening to the advise or firewall, anti-virus, and Windows Update. I'm seeing quite a few Gateway owners now that Gateway has closed their area retail units. One lady said that she had been to them 3 times and they reinstalled windows each time. I guess that's more profitable than sitting for hours pulling the junk out.
It still remains to be seen whether my small venture will survive, but I'm hanging my hat on the web design side and not pushing the PC cleanup to hard. I still follow this board regularly as it's a great source of heads up information.
Thanks Myst--- That will be great to hone my calibration skills on.
If anybody gets bored and would like to give me a set up for SPY it would be appreciated. I'm trying to get back in the grove after a long absence from the market, and I want to test my rusty set up skills against someone who has more recent experience.
I realize that SPY is not a good X_DEV candidate, but I learn more trying to tweak the non optimum ones. I seem to have forgotten more than I remember. :)
I know it's been awhile, but I've read every post. The last year has been a Job year. That's as in Job the bible Job. Following the cheerful posts here has helped.
Hey Myst,
Thanks for the updated version of X_DEV. Sometimes it pays to be slow. I just did the install, and benefited from the posts of those who reported problems. I haven't been able to spend time on stocks in the last bunch of months, but I'm keeping my tools sharp for when the hunt can be resumed. I'm still following the board in learning mode.
As a side note do you and Jimbob know about http://www.webmasterworld.com/ ? It is a great place if you have a tough web design problem.
Ergo, Let me put you on to something that I wish that someone would have tipped me to about two years ago.
http://www.webmasterworld.com/
Dan, I never go to SI any more for lack of time. You can post it there if you would like.
SCAM ALERT! Back in September after some investigation and trial, I bought Handy Backup 4.1 from http://www.handybackup.net . As time progressed it worked ok until the last few weeks it progressed to unusable. Reinstall didn't help. Google search led to http://www.handybackup.com and I emailed support not noticing the difference in the URL. They responded the next day telling me that I bought from a fraudulent site, and the 4.1 version is a clone of their old 3.5. They have version 4.0 which I am trying and it works ok, but who are you going to believe here. I filled a report with FBI, but that probably won't be priority with all the real threats out there in the post 9/11 world. For the curious look at both sites. I need backup to work, but this is a confusing situation. Supposedly the people at .net are Russians and the .com are from W's home state. The emailer's name from Texas sounded Russian also. :)
Dell Story--First let me say we love Dell down here, but no more late night tech support. My son-in-law bought a Dell PC and after 3 months the monitor dies. No problem as they send him a replacement. Eight months go buy and the replacement dies. He calls India and they say, "Dude you got to buy a new one". Two hours of screaming at various levels of authority and, "Dude you got to buy a new monitor." He calls USA customer support early the next morning and, "Dude we are so sorry and we will send you a new one free". Five days went buy and no monitor. On calling Dell says, "we are sorry your order got accidently canceled, but now it's really going to ship." The story is still unfolding.
wecus, Thanks for the chart. Very helpful!
Challenge for Outlook/Word Users! I've been trying to figure how to set the default margins in Outlook XP with Word as default for email. I have tried changing the templates, but with no luck. It indicates that the template is being changed, but on reload the margins are back to full wide.
This will probably work for you. http://www.windowsbbs.com/
I got it from the Windows-Help.net newsletter that I get. I am not sure if I have used it, but it looks great.
Anonymous identity queries: The challenge-response process can be configured so that your own email address is not included. This prevents your email address from being validated by spammers and eliminates all bounce-back error messages from your POP3 accounts.
They generate the message off of your email server, and it's not tied to your email address or it comes from there server. I'm not sure which. You have seen those mailing list types that you can't respond to the address. An example out of my white list is "anonymous@station199.com" When you buy something or sign up for a site on line they give an automated response. You have to be alert for these or they will be lost in the trash. You will usually expect them so it's not a problem.
Hey LC, I finally settled on ChoiceMail One and like it fine. I paid $30 which was a special offer from their $40 normal. In the trial the tech support folks were prompt and helpful which is important to me. So much software has phantom support. It has the concept that I like, which is to treat everything as spam and run it through your white list for acceptance. It stands between Outlook and the server, and when someone mails you they are ask to register to be on your white list, and you set up the number of days to dump their message if they don't. Your address book is automaticly added to the white list. The blacklist idea is dead because spam rarely has the same address twice. ChoiceMail has one of those also, but encourages you to keep it small. I really feel like for me it solved the spam problem. http://www.digiportal.com
I got a creepy spam email today. It was of this form xxxxxxxxxxxx.ab@www.arl.fgh.au and the value in the xxxxxxxxxxxx was the exact first and last name of my 9 year old grandson. That can't be an accident, and I'm wondering if it didn't come from my daughters computer as a robot send. Anybody ever heard of such as this.
We can hope and pray! I'm doing work for the local Chamber of Commerce and they are buried in spam.
Greg, Is it possible that your ISP has a new filter on the server? I don't see any let up here. I get 50 -60 a day on the worst infected of my 4 accounts.
Hey LC, Yep still stuck in self employment mode. I don't want to add to the unemployment numbers.
Mailwasher Pro is already on my PC from way back, but the spamers have the filter systems beat with their fake address system. Mailwasher is getting about 75% but it still requires vigilance on the other 25% so a good message won't be lost.
I un-installed AllSpamGone last tonight. They have the right idea, but it is at best a beta version. It should not be for sale yet. The idea of getting a valid sender to give your a onetime verification is what I liked about it. I found the same features last night in ChoiceMail One. It is a way better built software with the same basic ideas. It looks like one of them copied from the other. The down side is that after the 14 day trial it is $39. So far it works good with 2 minor questions that I have submitted to their tech support.
I have clients with big spam problems and I want something that can be recommended. http://www.digiportal.com/
Hold the phone for now. It is sending all my email to Outlook Express and I use Outlook, and there is no way to change default email program. It has promise, but in my book not ready for prime time.
I have installed the trial for AllSpamGone and am wondering if anybody has tried it. It is an easy install and works by requiring the sender to reply to an email. Then the user gets to accept or reject the sender, and all future messages submit to this status. All Outlook and Outlook Express address and account set ups are imported. This could be the real deal. There is no help file, but you hardly need one. There are a few FAQ online, but no help files there either. http://www.allspamgone.com It winds up costing right at $20 if you like it after 20 days.
When I was on dial-up I had some increased performance using Tweak Master http://www.tweakmaster.com They have a trial I think.
Castle, I beleive that will probably to complex for the user involved, but I will forward your response and also the one from Myles. My bet is that they will end up password protecting their individual user accounts in XP.
Myles, Thanks for the help, but I believe that would be to complex for the lady envolved. She needs something like a password protected folder.
Secure only one Folder? Anybody ever heard of a way to secure a single folder in XP? This would be an attempt to have a private folder without setting up password user accounts for each family user. I have a friend who has some business files that she doesn't want damaged or lost by the kids. Of course free is the first preference.
