Here is a puzzle for someone to solve. I was looking at QQQ and got three very different charts with each data source. I changed nothing each time except the data source. One shows all the candlesticks as red. One looks normal, and one is showing a start date that does not correspond to the date in my set up. Any ideas?
whitelake
Lou, Thanks for the detailed response. It seems that when I re-opt, that I spend a lot of time looking at the beginning of the period thinking about the effect of the start day on the outcome. If you pick a start at the end of a dip, then a buy won't come around till she goes North and then heads South again. How important is the selection of the start date in the re-opt process? I guess the main thing is to get the two distinct buying periods and two distinct selling periods without going back into a trend that is dissimilar to the current one.
whitelake
Hey Lou, I'm dedicated to enhancing my understanding of re-opt today and now a question. In chapter 4 of the manual re-opt is indicated in mid January 2002 for IBM. I don't see how at this point X_DEV could be re-opted for a downtrend with only up trend data to look back on. In "Suggestions for Down trends" this is the only part that gives me trouble. I would probably want to bail out here and watch for confirmation of the downtrend. That brings the next question. How far in the downtrend would we have to go to have enough data to re-opt. It seems we wouldn't want a lot of the old up trend included.
In the last week I started to use X_DEV to manage some of my existing positions that have been thrashed as diving AIMers. Also some SPY which we have been having has received some X_DEV induced sells. All though they are actually not ideal candidates for X_DEV, and don't get the benefit of starting fresh with cash I think so far it is working. I really like the idea of having definite buy and sell points as it helps get some of the emotion out of it. I follow three very different market gurus, and my cranial processor then comes up with a "feel" for the market. I like for X_DEV's recommendations to match that market "feel". My present gurus are Tom Veal with his AIM newsletter, Robert Drach and his newsletter, and Zeev Hed. It's a diverse group for sure!
The holidays were good, and I hope yours were also.

Lou, I wonder if some %gain numbers would be helpful in the Portfolio section. That seems like the way most people measure success or failure, and would probably be easy to add. What do you think?
whitelake
tc, It looks good but I think it is over my head. I found the web site of the developer and looked it over.
http://www.memtest86.com/ It looks too complex, and I don't think the test result would be usable at my level.
I have 256meg installed and the System Properties shows 256. Everything works fine, but sometimes when I boot up in the morning I get fatal exception. Today I did and when I pressed a key I got "Kernel32 caused invalid page fault in module USER.EXE". I made that go away and I got "Autochk caused invalid page fault in USER>EXE". I had to reboot and after that it has worked fine all day. I'm using Cacheman with the multitasking setting. I would probably think seriously of upgrading to WinXP, but this PC is 4 years old next month and a new one might be 12 months away if we could hit oil.:)
whitelake
Lou, While you are on the topic of getting saved. What about portfolio control? How do you save when you add to that? I know it automatically saves when you shut down, but what about when you have added a lot of data and are just leaving the portfolio window open?
whitelake
Jim, Thanks for that. I looked for a print version and couldn't find it. I want to save it to see if he gets any of his surprises.
whitelake
Thanks tc, This board is worth an IHUB subscription by itself.
whitelake
Rick, Thanks for the heads up. I got the update.
whitelake
SDRAM? I put in 2 new 128 megs of RAM and I am getting a Kernel 32.DLL error every now and then. It's not two bad, but I wonder if there is any way to check those two new chips to see if they are good without takeing them out. Most of the time everything works fine. I am Windows 98.
whitelake
DGX is a stock I follow but don't presently own, and I decided to see what kind of set up I could get. I would appreciate any comments and set ups that beat mine.
It's neat how it will skip what I would think were good buy points and get even better ones. If I can just get greater discipline by using X_DEV it will be an improvement.
whitelake
Rien, This is probably a dumb question? Can you trade the same stocks that I trade in the USA? I know very little about what Europe is doing to the prices we face at the open in New York.
whitelake
Jim, I tried to get my domain pulled from those boys by asking VeriSign to transfer the registration, but no luck. I plan on letting it expire, and the next day picking the same domain up through my host. It wouldn't work for a well known domain, but mine it will.
whitelake
Mark, Just to set the record straight I did not infer privately or publicly that you created a second user name. I ask lightwaves1 this simple question, http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=653989 and made no connection in my mind with you. My thoughts were that lightwaves1 had somehow changed names because he didn't like his old one. When I was a kid I tried to pull my dog "Tip" out of a fight and he bit me. I should have learned something from that. I bear no hard feelings toward you or Myst, but I am through with this mess.
whitelake
Hi Lightwaves1, I always like to go to a person's profile and read some of their previous posts so I can get a feel for who I am reading. I notice that your screen name was born Jan 03, 2003 an you only have this post. Do you have a prior name that I could use to read some of your past stuff. I figure since you "have been following this board for quite some time"you probably do.
whitelake
Jimbob, If you are dumping the one I put you on to I'm sorry. I had to dump them about a month or two ago. Their email would not come to me cause my ISP uses a SPEWS based spam filter and they host a lot of spamers. I got one with 300megs storage for $50.00 a year and the tech support is 24/7 and fast via online support. I have 2 sites hosted there now. Good luck with your new host.
whitelake
Wow! I think I prefer "thinly veiled ridicule". I encourage all parties to this very interesting debate to dampen the emotion and stoke the logic. Yes I know, "blessed are the peace makers for they shall be stomped by both armies."
whitelake
Tom, Chuck and myself are just happy that we didn't top the "Worst of 2002" list with SCH.
whitelake
Jack, Right next to the "Daily Status" button is a little triangle that makes a drop dowm. You have to click on one of those quote services to update the portfolio. I had the same problem.
whitelake
Myst,
I see the light now. Thanks for the detailed explanation, and looking at the "Report" as you suggested tied it all together. I don't remember the "Report" being that detailed in earlier versions. It's really great that you are still striving for "perfection" on X_DEV. Most folks would say the job is well done and relax.
whitelake
Hopefully, my explanation will be helpful for now.
After further review I don't see how your explanation could be improved on. Maybe it is a candidate for the Q&A file.
whitelake
Lou, Thanks for the detailed explanation. I'll play with it as you suggested.
whitelake
Lou, Sure did have good holidays and hope you also faired well. I have just one more little question if you have time. In this chart for SCH it would seem that there would be a number of shares in the sell recomendation since the 12.01 sell price is possible tomorrow.
whitelake
Hey Lou, I see you have some little toggle buttons by your trading set up numbers. Mine dosen't have that. I wonder what the difference is.
whitelake
Since the problem started I have doubled up on the RAM to 256 with no good effect. All the clues so far point to Norton, but it is to soon to tell after the reinstall.
whitelake
shawn, Consider posting the same on the StockCharts board. Double coverage won't hurt. http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=1277
whitelake
AK, Unfortunately it is a bigger problem that effects most all web sites when it chooses to kick in. I'm reinstalling Norton now which is where the trouble seems to lie according to my search today. Thanks anyway.
whitelake
Red X for images? I am still trying to solve the problem of web pages sometimes opening with a Red x where images are supposed to be. I have IE 6.0 and Norton NAV2002. It seems to start after email scanning, and once it starts only a reboot will stop the problem. This MS knowledge base article seems to fit the problem exactly except it doesn't specify IE 6.0 and the Norton file in question is not found on my computer. If anybody is starting the New Year bored and want's to be challenged this might be it for you. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316545 Thanks!
whitelake
Troy, Here is a site with links to 97 different speed tests.
http://home.cfl.rr.com/eaa/Bandwidth.htm That TweakMaster http://www.tweakmaster.com/ might be worth a look. I'm uploading at 358kbps.
whitelake
Gulfbreeze, Just spent a good while at pcpitstop. I got some good suggestions there. I like your nautical name. Thanks
whitelake
tc, I got the DSL so I could get rid of the extra phone. I'm saving $15.00 a month. My wife has medical needs that require an open phone line, so the speed is just lagniappe.
whitelake
arkie, T1 is mostly for busines users and is very costly. Here is a link I Googled up. http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/T/T_1_carrier.html
whitelake
AK, I'm not sure about the actual numbers but the comparison looks good to me. This is a site that a friend gave me who has a cable modem. http://www.cable-modem.net/features/oct99/speed.html Give it a try and see what you get. I get big numbers like you on other test sites, and even up to 1.1 megs.
Thanks for the info.
whitelake
tc, I usually follow scan disk with Defrag. Now that I am blessed with DSL do I need to disconnect so I can shut down Zone Alarm and Norton? If so how? My ISP guy was very unclear on how to disconnect properly. I could take the phone line off, but is that the best way?
While we are on DSL I tried TweakMaster and boosted my speed a bunch. I don't know if this result is normal, but here is a shot of an online test.
whitelake
Lou, That sounded like a logical explination. Yea I only have 100 shares and no cash. I'll try and tack on the chart so you can see the set up. I'm playing with starting X_Dev when you already are at zero cash and 100 shares. I'm on Chapter 6 in the manual. Great work!
whitelake
Portfolio Question? I am having time to dive into the great user manual and got puzzled in the Portfolio. These numbers don't seem to relate.
whitelake
TweakDun? I have been using this for a couple of years with dial-up, and now am blessed with DSL. Does anyone know if this was intended for DSL? I can't tell from the information I could find.
http://www.pattersondesigns.com/tweakdun/ It had increased my download speed from around 3.0K to 4.3K which seemed big. I'm thinking I can un-install it.
whitelake
LC, I saw the chart when I opened your post in IHUB, and then I saw it again off geocities by clicking on trading.gif. I'll clear my cache and then go to it to see if that's it.
whitelake
Lou, Try copying the URL into you browser address. You should see it in your browser. I'm using IE 6.0.
whitelake
LC, I see it fine and wonder in a big way why you guys don't.
whitelake
