3G Phone Launch for Vodafone Spain
1st June, 2004
Europe : Vodafone Spain today announces the commercial introduction of its first 3G consumer services for customers with Vodafone live! TM 3G . Today’s announcement marks an important step in the rollout of Vodafone’s 3G services in Spain and follows the successful launch in Europe, as well as in Spain, of the Vodafone’s Mobile Connect 3G/GPRS Data Card for business customers.
Following successful pre-commercial customer trials of Vodafone live!TM 3G in Spain, conducted with over 600 customers, Vodafone Spain has decided to commercially introduce the service for its “early adopter” customers. This initial launch will enable those customers keen to experience 3G consumer services, the opportunity to try out the technology prior to the full launch – with an additional range of Vodafone live! 3G handsets and enhanced services - planned for the coming autumn.
From today, customers wishing to become the first to try the service will be able to try out and purchase the Samsung Z105 - the first Vodafone live!TM 3G handset available, and shortly the Sony Ericsson Z1010, from Vodafone stores within the 22 principal Spanish cities with 3G coverage.
Vodafone is inviting “early adopter” customers to try the new Vodafone live!TM 3G services and is also offering them the opportunity to purchase 3G handsets via the Vodafone loyalty points programme. Customers choosing to pioneer Vodafone live!TM 3G will also be able to try some of the services free during the first two months. (*)1
Vodafone live!TM, the industry-leading, multi-media consumer service, will be enhanced by 3G technology, delivering to customers new communications possibilities that until now have been unavailable for mobile users. These new applications include: video calling, video streaming, and video downloads, as well as the availability of existing services such as video messaging. Using the new 3G services customers will be able to access the best content in sports, news, music, general entertainment and games, etc. thanks to agreements that Vodafone has with content providers such as the UEFA Champions League and Ferrari, amongst others. In addition, customers will experience better sound, image and video quality, as well as faster speeds for the downloading of games and ring-tones.
“The commercial availability today of Vodafone live!TM 3G will extend to our consumer customers the benefits of 3G mobile technology that are already being enjoyed by our business customers with the Vodafone Mobile Connect 3G / GPRS data card. The greater bandwidth offered by 3G will enable our customers to have access to new multimedia content and applications such as video calling,” commented Francisco Román, Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone Spain. “Like all emerging technologies, 3G will be progressively rolled out to incorporate enhanced services and further extend coverage over the coming months with the aim of offering customers a more complete service at the end of this year,” he concluded.
Furthermore, from today, Vodafone Spain customers will also be able to enjoy Vodafone live!TM 3G services whilst they are roaming abroad in seven European countries: France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Sweden, UK, as well as Japan. These roaming services will also become more extensively available in other countries over the coming months. For the moment, video calling services whilst roaming are available to Vodafone Spain customers travelling to Germany, Italy and Portugal.
Over the next year, Vodafone live! TM with 3G will open up a whole new world of communication and entertainment via the mobile phone, with a greater range of handsets, additional content and further coverage. Over the next five years, Vodafone’s planned network investment will total 2.8 billion Euros, of which an increasing proportion will be destined towards 3G.

Abertis Telecom, Nokia and Telefónica Móviles to start first digital mobile TV (DVB-H) pilot in Spain
July 04, 2005
Live broadcast programs will be provided by Antena 3, Sogecable, Telemadrid, Telecinco, TVE and TV3
Espoo, Finland - Abertis Telecom, Nokia and Telefónica Móviles España are starting a mobile TV pilot using Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld (DVB-H) technology. The project, which is backed by major regional and local channels, is first of its kind to take place in Spain. The pilot is a result of the convergence of mobile communications and TV broadcasting technologies. The pilot will take place in Madrid and Barcelona between September 2005 and February 2006, coinciding with the closing ceremony of the GSM World Congress 2006 in Barcelona.
500 users from Madrid and Barcelona will be able to watch high quality broadcast TV content from Antena 3, Sogecable, Telecinco, Telemadrid, TVE and TV3 on Nokia 7710 smartphones equipped with a special accessory to receive mobile TV broadcasts. With a wide color touch-screen (640 x 320 píxels) and stereo music player, users will also have the opportunity to take part in program related interactive services while watching TV.
The first technical pilots prior to the actual consumer pilot will start in June 2005. The consumer pilot will allow the three companies to test the feasibility of DVB-H technology and new mobile TV services. It will also be a chance to assess new business opportunities as well as refine the user experience. The pilot will assist in possible market research that would enable Abertis Telecom, Nokia and Telefónica Móviles to measure public interest in mobile TV services. Another important objective is to test the quality of the signal and broadcast in- and outdoors, in order to determine the best technical parameters for the viability of DVB-H based services.
Under the terms of the agreement, Telefónica Móviles is responsible for customer support, invoicing and interactive services. Abertis Telecom will broadcast the programs in Madrid and Barcelona and are also handling any technical issues with DVB-H signal. Nokia will provide the Mobile TV solution and smartphones that will be used for the pilot.

From Forbes.com Docomo's New Marketing Tool Uses Camera Phones, Unaltered Ads "
I knew it was just a matter of time before this happened.
NTT DoCoMo Inc. (TSE:9437) has developed a marketing tool that uses camera phones and a proprietary image recognition technique to enable a person to snap a photo of a printed ad or an outdoor signboard and receive coupons from the advertiser or link to an Internet site for more information.
Advertising linked to 2-D barcodes and digital watermarks has already been introduced as marketing tools that take advantage of Internet-capable camera phones. But DoCoMo's new system is more versatile, since nothing special needs to be done to the ad. In fact, the system can accommodate existing ads. Consumers do not have to worry about angle and alignment when snapping pictures and can even aim at faraway signboards atop buildings.
To use the system, consumers must download special software to their phones. The advertiser must have a server that stores a database of ads and a personal computer that manages the delivery of coupons and advertising information to consumers.
When a consumer shoots a photo of an ad or signboard, the phone-based software divides the image into blocks, calculates the color components of each block, and then sends this data to the server. The server compares the data against its database of pre-registered images to find a match

When I first read this as a Neomedia shareholder I thought thats a problem. Now Im not so sure. The sheer number of different ad pictures that would have to be registered for each brand verus turning on one barcode and a key word in Word Registery. I still like Paperclick.

I think this will be great for mobile advertsing, however, the story doesnt mention IP. That is my concern.
I have talked about this ability a few times and have been doing plenty of research on this technology.
Part of the problem with an emerging technology is keeping your goodies hidden until you're ready to market. It gives your competition less time to find ways around your IP.
There is a fine line between promoting your service, and not giving away your ideas.
There are a couple physical world connection companies I interviewed that have some amazing stuff for image recognition.

I agree 100% with your assement of the IP issue. One of the problems with being a visionary such as Neomedia is keeping your finger of the trigger until the delivery vehicle is well established. The out of court settlements with Virgin and AirClic are nice but the case against Scanbuy is the big test of the strength of their IP in my opnion.

I DO NOT BELIEVE JAPAN RECOGNIZES USA PATENTS. IF THIS IS THE CASE "DOCOMO" IS UNFAIRLY USING NEOMEDIA TECHNOLOGY

I think you should reread what NTT DoCoMo technology is doing, and then read what NeoMedia's IP covers.
I cannot take any credit.
I am just getting a handle on what NeoMedia is doing. NeoMedia puts it in black and white for all to see.
The credit goes to Team NeoMedia and the good folks on Ihub for helping me understand how big this company can be.
Several others have said to consider the possibility of a buyout. I am just getting it now.
A special thanks to JP.

Media first at Villa Park for new mobile ticketing trial
Journalists attending the Aston Villa v West Bromwich Albion match on April 10th were the first to take part in a new sytem trial that could radically re-define the way football clubs communicate with their fans.
Aston Villa, working with specialist access provider APT SkiData and mobile content transaction specialist SmartMachine, successfully completed a pilot whereby the media received their ‘tickets’ in the form of a two-dimensional (2D) barcode sent within an SMS message directly to their mobiles (providing details of where they were sitting, kick-off time etc). As they approached the entry to the Press Centre, they opened the message on their mobile and presented it to a reader that ‘scanned’ the barcode to grant access, and welcomed them into the ground. Villa management was then able to communicate subsequently with each ticket-holder as they entered.
Dave Money (Ticket Office Manager, Aston Villa)
“The trial went as well as we expected,” explains Claire Walton, Press Officer at Aston Villa. “The journalists seemed to be both intrigued and excited by the idea, and several of them had positive comment. We have a clear objective to further improve communications with our fans, and using mobile phone technology is potentially a good way of achieving this.”
As well as the media, the technology was also trialled at the Directors’ entrance, where fixed reading devices were used to scan each barcode. 2D barcodes were used because they can store more data, and are more reliable (ie less prone to reader error). They are also secure in that they cannot be forwarded and used by others.
Mobile 2-D barcode ticket
“The clever integration of having a ‘phone act as a ticket to access a ground will be revolutionary to many but gives Clubs virtually limitless possibilities for the future, especially from a CRM perspective,” adds APT SkiData’s Renier Steyn.
“The Club knows, from the information gathered as the fans come through the turnstiles, which matches their fans come to and when, at what time etc. This means they are able to get a better profile of each individual fan, and can potentially tailor a whole range of services to them.”
The technology from APT SkiData is already widely recognised as best-in-class on the Continent, and has been specified for [all] of the football grounds being used as part of the World Cup 2006 in Germany. Clubs using APT SkiData systems in the UK include West Bromwich Albion, Blackburn Rovers and Leeds United.
APT SkiData was appointed to conduct the trial working with Aston Villa’s specialist marketing consultants - Sports Alliance. Aston Villa was one of the 12 founder members of the Football League in 1888, and can trace its history back to its first game in 1874.

Ticket Trends - Aura Digital Communications,
Mobile ticketing is the way of the future - MTIXTM sets the standard
July 11th 2005 sees the official launch of MTIXTM Australia, Australia's premier mobile ticketing solution provider.
While for some fans paper tickets will always retain sentimental value a growing percentage of tickets across all types of events, from concerts to sporting matches, festivals and even exhibitions are now being delivered electronically, either via SMS to a mobile phone or email as a .PDF to print at home.
Scott Tulloch, Sales Director for MTIXTM commented "Considering only 56% of Australians have access to the internet at home, but 85% own a mobile phone, it only makes sense to use SMS as the preferred delivery method. This means loyal fans no longer have to waste time queuing to collect tickets to see their favourite band or DJ. Mobile tickets will become the favoured delivery option with consumers because of their convenience and immediate delivery."
An MTIXTM mobile ticket is received via SMS after the completion of an online transaction. It contains a unique barcode plus event related information is received directly to the consumer's mobile phone. At the entry point of the event the barcode is scanned off the screen of the phone and validated against a secure Access Control platform. For the small percentage of phones that cannot receive the barcode a numeric code is delivered and then keystroked in at the point of entry.
Over the past 24 months the events industry has witnessed a massive shift in mindset as promoters and venues have embraced the internet and the effectiveness of e-marketing. Promoters and venues now realise that they are not nearly as reliant as they once were on the big two ticket sales channels.
For several years two players, Ticketek and Ticketmaster7, have dominated the ticketing landscape. But this is all about to change. Their domination has not been based on value and service but more so based on the fact that these two companies buy the exclusive ticketing rights to the major venues. For too long they have only been able to maintain a strangle hold on the market and create a duopoly situation.
MTIXTM provides a unique service and platform for event organisers to take back control and market, sell, distribute and validate tickets at events using electronic tickets, which delivered to your mobile phone or printed out at home. There is no need to ever produce or post a paper ticket to the end consumer again.
Australia is now one of the leaders in the world for 'mobile ticketing'. Last month CeBIT Australia set a world record for the largest 'mobile ticketed' event with 13,000 people selecting to receive their ticket directly to their mobile phone. In the past 12 months several concerts for big name acts such as Jet, Grinspoon, Machine Gun Fellatio, Dallas Crane, The Prodigy, Black Keys, The Frames and even old time rockers Echo & the Bunnymen have all sold and delivered up to 52% of tickets as 'mobile tickets'.

inthemix partners with AURA to deliver Australia's first 100% mobile ticketed event
inthemix.com.au [ITM], Australia's leading dance music portal, partnered with AURA Digital Communications have achieved an Australian first by selling 100% of tickets to the Deep Dish event at YU in Sydney via mobile ticketing, rather than as traditional physical paper tickets.
inthemix customers were able to securely purchase online and then receive their tickets directly to their mobile phone, eliminating the need to produce and distribute paper tickets.
The patron receives an SMS containing a barcode and event information, which is then scanned at the entry point to validate the ticket.
Libby Clark, inthemix Director commented, "The mobile ticketing option definitely makes sense for our customer-base as nearly all of them own a mobile phone. It's so much faster and easier for us than having to post out paper tickets. As a consumer receiving tickets to your phone is so much more convenient."
Adam Dunne, Sales & Marketing Director for AURA Digital said, "This milestone signifies that mobile ticketing is here to stay. Consumers love the convenience of instant delivery and event organisers love the simplicity of integrating the AURA M-TIXTM platform with their existing system. Tickets can now be sold and delivered straight into the hands of the consumer in a few minutes, and dramatically reduce the administrative processes associated with paper tickets for the organisers."
inthemix is the industry leader and provide their clients, including some of Australia's premier venues and promoters, with a secure online ticketing system plus additional marketing services through reaching their large and loyal online community.

CeBIT Australia sets a world record for the largest mobile ticketed event in history
CeBIT Australia 2005, part of the largest consumer electronics and technology exhibition series in the world, created a world record by issuing 13,000 m-tickets direct to attendees' mobile phones when they pre-registered online. This represented 30 per cent of attendees requesting their tickets as a mobile ticket.
"This is the first time m-ticketing has been used for a CeBIT exhibition and it is a world record for m-ticketing," says Jo-Anne Kelleway, Director of exhibition registration specialist InfoSalons. "The mobile ticketing technology for CeBIT Australia was developed by AURA Digital Communications and delivered by messaging expert Vodafone Target."
"The m-ticket solution dramatically improved our ticket fulfilment process. Door staff saved time scanning phones rather than issuing tickets at the event and attendees said they liked the convenience of mobile tickets."
"The m-ticket option confirmed consumer acceptance of mobile ticketing, with 13,000 attendees choosing to receive the m-ticket directly to their mobile phone." commented Adam Dunne, Sales & Marketing Director for AURA Digital.
M-tickets are around half the cost of mailed paper tickets for the event organiser and offer the convenience of instant delivery and last minute availability. They also enhanced the CeBIT brand by association with innovative technology.
Aside from Japan and Korea, Australia leads the western world in mobile ticketing technology. InfoSalons Australia and their technology partner, AURA Digital Communications, delivered the world's first trade show application last year, which was later awarded the 2004 Global Mobile Messaging Award for 'Best Enterprise Solution'. Now InfoSalons can also lay claim the world's largest mobile ticketed event.

AURA Digital partners with United International Pictures (UIP) ,their media agency Mediaedge:cia, and Adshel to launch a revolutionary interactive advertising
AURA Digital Communications will partner with United International Pictures (UIP) and Adshel to launch a revolutionary interactive advertising technology called Hypertags for the upcoming release of War of the Worlds on June 29, 2005.
Selected bus shelters have been chosen to display War of the Worlds posters using Hypertag technology. This allows the public to interact with the advertising panel through the infrared device in their mobile phone. Consumers can download War of the Worlds mobile phone ring tones and wallpapers straight from the advertising sign free of charge. Advertisers will be able to measure consumer interactions to gauge the success of the campaign.
The themed Adshel bus shelters are part of a broader national Adshel campaign. This will feature fully wrapped War of the Worlds creative executions, in addition to stickers on the ground, in the bus shelter, the first time the creative execution has "come to life" off the shelter itself.
Mike Selwyn, Managing Director of UIP comments, "With War of the Worlds, Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise have created the most spectacular and thought-provoking film of the year. It is only appropriate for us to partner with AURA Digital and Adshel to launch the film using this new and ground-breaking interactive advertising technology."
Aura is recognised as a leader in mobile marketing technology and the global pioneer of mobile ticketing. Adam Dunne, AURA Sales & Marketing Director, comments, "Hypertag technology allows advertisers to engage and interact with consumers as they pass by out-of home media, such as street furniture and posters. They can download free mobile content such as ringtones, wallpapers, games or m-vouchers."
"The alien invasion has hit Australia," Steve McCarthy, Adshel CEO comments, "we are extremely excited about this launch - a first for the industry in the southern hemisphere. The War of the Worlds campaign is a great example of a valued client using cutting edge technology that works on street furniture. Combining UIP's creative idea with this technology will result in a hugely anticipated never-before-been-seen movie launch, and out of home is the perfect environment to do this."

"We are completely dedicated to improving the quality of service here at Comerica Park," said Duane McLean, Detroit Tigers Senior Vice President of Sales. "TeamExchange adds a whole new value to our season subscription packages as well as a greater purchase opportunity for the single game ticket buyers. Ticketmaster's AccountManager product has already proven to deliver value, quality and service by enabling our season patrons to manage their ticket inventories and season ticket accounts entirely online. Now, with TeamExchange, we're taking customer service to an entirely new level by introducing an authorized aftermarket in which season ticket holders can resell any tickets that they are unable to use."
As part of the agreement, the Tigers will continue to utilize Ticketmaster's state-of-the-art ticketing platform as well as the Ticket Forwarding function of AccountManager. Using Ticket Forwarding, season ticket holders can maximize use of their tickets by forwarding tickets they are unable to use to family, friends or clients electronically -- even at the last minute. Once the tickets have been forwarded through email, the recipient simply downloads and prints the tickets using Ticketmaster's ticketFast technology.
Ticketmaster will continue to sell Tigers single game tickets and handle Tigers season ticketing services. Tigers tickets are available online at mlb.com, detroittigers.com, charge-by-phone at 248-25-TIGER and at Ticketmaster retail ticket locations throughout Michigan including: Marshall Fields, FYE stores and D & W stores (Grand Rapids area).
"With the launch of the Tigers TeamExchange, the Tigers baseball club is among the teams leading the future of event ticketing and customer service satisfaction," said Bob Garsh, General Manager, Ticketmaster Detroit. "Our completely automated secondary market ticketing system will help the Tigers provide a higher level of fan satisfaction, giving season ticket holders unparalleled access and control of their tickets, along with the freedom to make the most of their season ticket investment."

RFID Hypertag Mobile Tags
What's a Hypertag
... "Hypertags are short-range wireless tags fitted inside poster advertising. Using ubiquitous mobile phone technologies such as infra-red, they enable advertisers to beam interactive content to people's mobile phones. A user simply activates the infra-red on their phone, holds it up to the Hypertag and receives content such as vouchers, business cards, ringtones or games. Because Hypertags do not rely on mobile phone networks to function, they can be deployed in areas such as underground stations. " ...
Hypertag is a mobile marketing technology company offering short-range wireless tags (Hypertags) for use in poster advertising. The company uses infra-red technology to enable consumer interaction with poster advertising and works with major media owners such as Viacom Outdoor and JC Decaux as well as with brands such as P&G, O2 and HP. By adding interactivity into posters, Hypertags increase brand awareness and recall and offer a positive call to action for consumers. Hypertags are cost effective and easy to install, revolutionising poster advertising for a minimum investment. As well as basic interactions, Hypertags can send dynamic content, games and applications to phones.

It looks like Hypertag needs a license from NeoMedia to connect to the web. Hypertags appear to be classified as RFID. This explains Aura Digital's statements. Aura is the licensee which will allow Hypertags to be fully utilized.
I hope you don't mind if I talk out loud.
For me,
the question would be, would I move forward (In the press & launch) with a company being sued? You don't make that kind of announcemnet unless you can deliver.
I am also starting to understand why a Scanbuy buyout is a real possibility. It fits NeoMedia's MO of licensing and rebranding PaperClick, and focusing on mobile marketing services. It also may explain the careful wording about the AirClik settlement. AirClik could then move forward with Scanbuy (a NeoMedia company). Scanbuy's investors are satisfied. It's win-win for everyone.
NeoMedia's Plan - From S4
NEOMEDIA INTERNET SWITCHING SOFTWARE
The goal of NeoMedia's Internet Switching Software business segment is to promote mass adoption of NeoMedia's switch and background computer process to link physical world objects to the Internet. NeoMedia's switching platform is a state-of-the-art open and extensible cross-media publishing tool that applies to customers in a variety of industrial, commercial, and educational applications. This business segment is also responsible for licensing NeoMedia's intellectual property to others as a means of promoting this new market as well as providing a revenue and cash resource. NeoMedia has been developing its physical-world-to-Internet technology and offerings since 1996 and considers itself an innovator and pioneer in this industry. In the past several years, NeoMedia has seen similar technologies and concepts emerge in the marketplace, and sees these events as a positive validation of the physical world-to-internet concept.
NeoMedia believes the key to the adoption of physical-world-to-Internet technologies in the marketplace will be in the development of real world applications that provide the end user a valuable experience. NeoMedia believes that, with an estimated 1.5 billion mobile phone users worldwide, mobile devices such as cellular telephones and PDAs are a key device in the development of the physical world to Internet marketplace. To this end, during 2003, NeoMedia announced its PaperClick(R) for Camera Cell PhonesTM product, which reads and decodes UPC/EAN or other bar codes to link users to the Internet, providing information and enabling e-commerce on a compatible camera cell phone. During 2004, NeoMedia introduced PaperClick(R) Mobile Marketing Services, a mobile solution using PaperClick(R) for Camera Cell Phones that allows global marketer and advertising agencies to have one-on-one contact with consumers through cell phones and other mobile wireless devices. PaperClick(R) Mobile Marketing Services delivers real-time promotional content, which can be updated and changed by marketers, while giving consumers one-click e-commerce buying power. The latest addition to the Mobile Marketing Services suite lets users of a wide range of already-in-use camera phones "take pictures" of special created codes on packages and promotional items and connect in one-click to marketing information.
STRATEGY
NEOMEDIA INTERNET SWITCHING SOFTWARE
NeoMedia has spent the past decade developing and patenting the now confirmed space of linking the physical and Internet environments, and developing and implementing five generations of continuously refined switch technology that bridge these environments. During the past year-and-half, NeoMedia has introduced PaperClick(R) for Camera Cell Phones and PaperClick(R) Mobile Marketing Services, shifting the focus of this dynamic unit to the rapidly emerging mobile marketing sector. NeoMedia is strategically pursuing potential licensees of the PaperClick(R) switching platform, as well as intellectual property licensing opportunities with organizations attempting to commercialize physical-world-to-Internet technology, such as Symbol Technologies, A.T. Cross Company and Brandkey Systems Corporation.

PRODUCTS/SERVICES
NEOMEDIA INTERNET SWITCHING SOFTWARE
PAPERCLICK(R) MOBILE MARKETING SERVICE
PaperClick(R) is a Mobile Marketing Service that enables brand managers and consumer product manufacturers to market directly to their target customers via their portable devices such as mobile phones, and PDAs. Using products, brand names, and marketing collateral, brand managers and consumer product manufacturers can interact directly with their customers.
By entering a word or phrase (e.g., brand name or tagline) into a mobile device, or by taking a picture of a barcode on your product or your marketing collateral, a consumer can retrieve tailored Web content in one click, even pages deep within a website. PaperClick(R) bypasses long URLs, search engines, or difficult-to-navigate phone menus. PaperClick(R) can directly link a word or code to mobile commerce, rebates, contests, coupons, registration, instructional videos, ad tracking, polling, customer profiling, and more.
PaperClick(R) links a unique identifier (e.g., barcode or word) to a specific URL (i.e., Webpage) using a simple 5-step process:
STEP 1: Activation - A barcode or word is activated by the product manufacturer;
STEP 2: A PaperClick(R)-enabled device retrieves the code or word;
STEP 3: The device's Web browser is automatically launched and connects to a designated server;
STEP 4: The server retrieves the specific URL based on the barcode or word; and
STEP 5: The URL is downloaded to the device's browser.
The PaperClick(R) solution consists of:
WORD ACTIVATION
1. Register brand names or taglines in the PaperClick(R)
WordRegistryTM. The WordRegistryTM is the official repository for PaperClick(R) Words;
2. Bid on non-trademarked words. Non-trademarked words (e.g., cola, burger, car) will be auctioned to the highest bidder via the
PaperClick(R) WordRegistryTM; and
3. Activate your brand names and taglines by linking them to mobile web content using Link Manager Software.
CREATED CODE ACTIVATION. NeoMedia can create custom PaperClick(R) codes to place on product packaging or literature, a subway poster, a direct mailer, or other marketing collateral. Consumers with a camera phone simply snap a picture of the code and link directly to Web content designated by the product's manufacturer.
EXISTING CODE ACTIVATION. As with created codes, PaperClick(R) can link already-existing product codes, such as UPC, EAN, JAN, and ISBN codes, to tailored Web content.
With activation, NeoMedia also provides the following word and code link management tools:
LINK MANAGER SOFTWARE. Software for a PC that allows a product owner to link words and codes to a specific URL;
HANDSET SOFTWARE. Device software required for a mobile device customers to read activated codes and words; and
BASIC REPORTING. Allows product owner to track the number of consumer "hits" by code, date and time.
NeoMedia also offers the following value-added services with word or code activation:
CLICK MANAGEMENT SERVICES
LINK MANAGER SERVICE. NeoMedia will manage the linking of all words and codes on behalf of a product owner; and
CODE VERIFICATION. NeoMedia will test each code to ensure that it is printed properly and that it links to the correct URL.
WEB CONTENT CREATION SERVICES. NeoMedia assists its customers in creating Web content for mobile devices in XHTML, WAP and other mobile formats.
MOBILE MARKETING CAMPAIGN SERVICES. NeoMedia helps its customers create mobile advertising campaigns using their products with PaperClick(R) technology.
CUSTOMIZED REPORTING. NeoMedia offers customized reporting and data mining that allows product owners to receive additional data about their marketing campaigns.
SERVER SOFTWARE. For product owners that are managing a large number of codes or words, NeoMedia offers Server Software that allows them to store the links within their organization's network.
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LICENSING.
NeoMedia currently holds six United States patents relating to the physical-world-to-Internet marketplace, and an additional six patents acquired in 2003 with the purchase of Secure Source Technologies related to document security. NeoMedia's core physical-world-to-Internet patent portfolio (Patent Nos. 5,933,829, 5,978,773, 6,108,656, 6,199,048, 6,434,561, and 6,542,933) is comprised of "system and method" patents that cover the use of machine-readable data for information retrieval. Among the identifiers that could be classified as machine-readable are PaperClick(R)-enabled 2D barcodes, 1D barcodes, UPC/EAN barcodes, magnetic stripes, OCR/ICR, RFID, smartcards, numbers, hot words, and voice. NeoMedia intends to license this intellectual property portfolio to companies endeavoring to tap the potential of this emerging market. To date, NeoMedia has entered into such agreements with Digital: Convergence, A.T. Cross Company, Symbol Technologies, and Brandkey Systems Corporation. During 2002,
NeoMedia entered into an agreement with Baniak Pineand Gannon, a law firm specializing in patent licensing and litigation, under which the firm will represent NeoMedia in seeking out potential licensees of NeoMedia's patent portfolio.

Vivid Entertainment Licenses Advanced ''Leapscan''-TM- Technology from Xobile That Lets Cell Phone Users Preview Adult Films in Stores
LOS ANGELES, CA, (NAMC) - Vivid Entertainment Group, the world's leading adult film company, has signed an exclusive licensing agreement with Xobile, a subsidiary of Adult Entertainment Broadcast Network (AEBN), for advanced Leapscan(TM) technology that will enable cellphone users to preview films while they shop in adult video stores.
The system utilizes proprietary Leapscan barcode scanning technology that allows cell phone users to stream videos such as trailers of videos onto camera-equipped mobile devices as they hold them in their hands.
"This is a great technology," said Steven Hirsch, co-chairman of Vivid. "All consumers need to do is point their camera phone at the barcode of our DVD box. The Leapscan software in the cellphone interprets the barcode, accesses the Web browser on the phone, then either downloads or streams a video trailer from a Xobile server to the customer's wireless device. It takes a matter of seconds and the viewers will be able to tell immediately if they want to purchase a specific video. This is such an exciting time for technology and as usual the adult sector is leading the way in creating new products and services that will invariably be in common use in a few years." Mr. Hirsch added, noting that age verification would not be an issue since there won't be any nudity involved.
"Leapscan is the most advanced use in the U.S. of two-dimensional barcode technology," according to Harvey Kaplan, CEO of Xobile, a Charlotte, NC subsidiary of AEBN, the global leader in adult video on demand distribution. "The software can be downloaded by SMS from a friend or from www.xobile.com and other designated websites." Mr. Kaplan noted that more than half the cellphones being sold today globally are enabled for this technology, and the number is increasing rapidly.
Vivid and Xobile will introduce the Leapscan technology at the Internext Summer 2005 expo August 5-7 at the Westin Diplomat Resort and Spa in Hollywood, FL.

Porn Stores Turn Into Clip Joints

A trip to the adult section at the video store is about to get spicier.
Vivid Entertainment, one of the leading suppliers of adult entertainment, has licensed a system that will let shoppers preview racy trailers on their camera phones just by scanning the bar code on the box. Now that's handheld entertainment.
At the store, the phone takes a picture of the bar code, which includes an embedded URL, and the phone's screen is redirected to a website that hosts the clips.
"There is not going to be any sex or nudity on the trailers; it will be G-rated," said Steven Hirsch, co-chairman of Vivid. "You are going to see a beautiful girl and the title, and you will decide whether to buy."
Called LeapScan, the technology is licensed from xobile (pronounced zoh-bul, adult content), a subsidiary of the Adult Entertainment Broadcast Network.
The company started as an incubator for internet upstarts, but is striking out with LeapScan as a new line of business. The company has been in beta since January and plans a Las Vegas launch party at the Internext online porn conference in August. The technology should become more widely available thereafter.
Plans for the launch party include some of Vivid's star performers putting temporary tattoos of embedded bar codes onto their bodies, Kaplan said. Fans who scan the bar codes will find their phones directed to clips of the stars performing acts that involve the tattooed body parts.
"People have to understand the technology or it will fall on its face," said xobile CEO Harvey Kaplan.
The technology's not just for porno. It can work for anything with a bar code and web content, Kaplan said.
"There are mainstream applications for it," he said. "Japan is a good market for click-and-buy technology. There you can walk by a movie poster on a bus stop where you scan a bar code and see a clip of the blockbuster movie."
Several other suppliers already offer streaming or downloaded content from the xobile site, but Vivid has an exclusive, eight-month license to the technology. After that, negotiations are open and other suppliers may contract for it as well.
"We have the ability to stream (suppliers') content over the internet. The only thing that has changed is the device consumers use to access the internet," Kaplan said. "They get a site optimized for a mobile phone."
Vivid plans to incorporate LeapScan into the 60 new movies the company gets each year. Vivid's 1,000-title back catalog will also receive the LeapScan treatment as titles get re-released, or get new liner notes.
And lest anyone think the web has replaced brick-and-mortar stores as outlets for porn, Hirsch said, Vivid still sells 80 percent of its DVDs through physical stores.
The content is refreshable, so content providers can change what the consumer sees. For example, the link could send users to a new title by the same performer.
"It was interesting to me because it gave us another way to reach out to the consumer and to market to the consumer in a very cool, technological way," said Hirsch. "What was intriguing to me were the marketing opportunities that go along with this. At the end of the movie, you will be able to scan a code and get some behind-the-scenes stuff."
P&G Beauty Adopts Interactive Media First in Drive to Raise Awareness on Aussie Haircare
London, 22 March, 2004
Distributed by PR Newswire on behalf of P&G Beauty
LONDON, England, March 22 /PRNewswire/ --
- With picture
A media first in advertising and promotion techniques hits London's Underground this week. Planned by ZenithOptimedia in association with Viacom Outdoor's Impact team, 25 posters on the London Underground have been fitted with interactive mobile phone technology 'Hypertag' for P&G Beauty brand Aussie haircare. Using the infra red function on a mobile phone and pointing the handset at an Aussie 6 Sheet poster, commuters will be able download a unique lucky number from an Aussie haircare ad and enter a competition to win a holiday in Australia.
Michael Inpong, Aussie haircare's assistant brand manager, comments, "We know that our predominantly female audience loves to try new things and is techno-savvy so we saw this campaign as a prefect route to interacting with and inspiring them to discover the Aussie experience."
"We also aim to drive traffic to our new website: www.aussiehair.com, where consumers can find out about our award winning intensive conditioner 3 Minute Miracle and sign up for a free sample. P&G Beauty brands are always keen to explore innovative ways to communicate with its consumers and Hypertag technology is an exciting way to reach our target market in London and the South East in a way that's never been done."
Chris Pyne, Planning Manager on Aussie at ZenithOptimedia, said: "as soon as we heard that this technology was available, we knew it would be perfect for the Aussie woman. From a media point of view, the fact that we can measure the actual number of downloads from each individual 6 sheet, brings us closer to measuring true ROI on posters than has ever been possible before."
Jon Lewen, Business Development Manager at Viacom Outdoor, says: "It's great to push the boundaries and open up brand new opportunities for advertisers on the Underground. Marrying a client's brand objectives with new technological advancements gives the resulting campaign great standout. Tube users will certainly get a buzz out of using their phones underground - something that hasn't been possible until now."
There are 25 special 6 Sheets at central stations including Oxford Circus, Paddington and Bank, supported by other 6 Sheets across the network. The media package was planned by ZenithOptimedia and bought by Starcom Motive.
Note to Editors:

Frequently Asked Questions:
How does Hypertag work?
The Hypertag is a small electronic tag that stores mobile digital content. It is constantly transmitting. When someone activates the infra-red port on their mobile, the phone receives the content. The Hypertag lights turn green to show that the content download is complete, and there's often a beep to signal to the user that this has happened.
Does it automatically send out content to consumer's mobiles?
No. Hypertag was deliberately designed as a permissive medium. Consumers decide to interact with the advert.
What type of phones does Hypertag work with?
Most phones with infra-red ports can receive content from a Hypertag, including older phones, some of which have been around for a few years. The type of content which can be received is governed by the capability of the mobile phone, but the Hypertag always recognises the phone model and sends it a compatible piece of content.
How do I activate the infrared port on my mobile phone?
The instructions are broadly similar for most phones. Go to the menu, and scroll through to infra-red or connectivity. Press select, and activate the infra-red.
Where is the infrared port on my mobile phone?
The infra-red port is usually at the top or on the side of your mobile phone. It is usually visible as a small, dark rectangular window. Detailed instructions on a phone-by-phone basis are made available to users during campaigns through a customer care line and the Hypertag website.
How near does the user need to be?
Currently Hypertags have a range of about 1 to 2m. The exact range is dictated by the infra-red port on the user's mobile phone.
How do you make sure its only giving out the advertiser's content?
A full security system is in place, to make sure that only authorised content can be uploaded to the tags. Quality systems also ensure that the correct content is always posted to the correct Hypertag site.
Does the Hypertag collect phone numbers?
No, it cannot collect numbers. The consumer needs to trust that any interaction will not have negative repercussions. A message at each site, clearly states that the
Hypertag cannot collect the user's phone number.
Does the Hypertag require mobile phone reception?
No. The content is stored on the Hypertag and sent to the phone over infra-red. The technology does not make use of the mobile phone network during the interaction, so it can work in places where there is no mobile phone coverage.
Does it cost the consumer to use it?
No. Because the content is sent direct from the Hypertag to the mobile phone, it is free to the consumer.
How do consumers know what to do?
The swirling lights of the Hypertag attract attention. There is a call to action in the poster copy of each Hypertag campaign and includes a band of instructions at the bottom of the poster on how to activate the infra-red.

Vodafone today announced its third-generation (3G) network would be commercially launched in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra this October -- rolling out to Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth in early 2006.
The multinational mobile phone operator also unveiled five 3G handsets that will be available at launch, including the Motorola V1050, the Sony Ericsson V800i, the Nokia 6680 and the Samsung Z500. The fifth handset will be a Sharp phone, although Vodafone couldn't disclose the model number other than to say it is the successor to the Sharp 902.
Features of its 3G service will include video calling, video messaging, full-track music downloads, music videos, movie trailers, mobile TV episodes called "mobisodes", games and live news.
Vodafone partnered with Optus in November last year to establish a AU$700 million alliance to develop and operate a national 3G radio network, which is expected to roll out to over 2,000 base stations by March 2007.
Vodafone's 3G services portal page, which it calls "live!", will be updated three or four times per day and will contain a search bar at the bottom for customers to quickly find content, according to the company. To alleviate customer concerns over the often hidden costs involved with browsing mobile phone portals, users will only be charged for content downloaded -- not general browsing of Vodafone live!.
"We've abolished those charges in the same way that you wouldn't you expect to charge customers to look around a Sanity music store, General Pants Co., or David Jones," general manager of mass markets Richard Sherwood said at a press conference in Sydney.
The streaming live news service is to be provided by Sky News Australia, which will also provide news reports as video downloads through the live! 3G portal.
"If it's a breaking news stories, like the London bombings for example, customers can watch it live on their mobile phones just as they would at home in front of the television," Sherwood said.
In conjunction with Twentieth Century Fox, Vodafone will host made-for-mobile TV episodes called "mobisodes". A spin-off of the popular TV show 24, called 24 Conspiracy, will be the first mobisode promoted at launch. In this case, users will be able to download the series via 24 individual one-minute episodes, rather than the 24 one-hour episodes that fans of the TV show are accustomed to.
While no local sports content partners could be confirmed, Vodafone stated that up to the minute sports highlights and results will be available in October. The service will also provide access to over 180 games including classics such as Pacman, Tetris and Lemmings as well as recent titles such as EA Sports Tiger Woods Golf 2005 and Batman Begins.
On its music channel, Vodafone claims customers will be able to download full-length songs in stereo sound from a library of over 500,000 tracks. Music tracks are stored on the handset as MP4 files, whereas music videos are in the 3GP format. When a customer downloads music content, a record of the purchase is stored on the handset and on Vodafone's customer database as proof of purchase. The company claims this allows its 3G customers to delete and re-install purchased music content as many times as they like without additional charges.
According to Vodafone spokesperson Greg Spears, it is possible to transfer the MP4 contents of a handset's memory card to a laptop, desktop PC or CD for storage, and then re-install the song on the mobile at a later date.
"However, there is an embedded DRM object within the track, which prevents it from being played on any device other than the mobile handset to which it was originally downloaded," Spears said.
For business customers, Vodafone plans to offer a 3G version of Vodafone Mobile Connect, a data card that will connect laptops to the Internet at speeds up to 384kbps.
Pricing on handsets, bundles and downloads will be announced closer to the launch in October, according to the company.
Vodafone 3G trials are currently underway with approximately 180 consumer and 40 business customers in Sydney, according to a Vodafone spokesperson.
Telstra is also currently trialling its 3G service, which it expects to launch commercially by the end of the year. The telecommunications giant last year signed a AU$450 million deal with Hutchison 3G Australia, which operates under the 3 mobile brand, to share and develop its existing third generation network.
