This one has speed...
I wonder what the pcpitstop score would be on this one. Lot of speed on every component. Gotta be one of the fastest laptops on Newegg's site.

I've got yellow marks on "other devices"...
Then is steps out to Multimedia Audio Controller and Universal Serial Bus (USB) controller.
I didn't plug the speakers back in yet.
Could that be why the audio controller is flagged?
YEA!!
Got that green tent with the green flag flying high.
Microsoft Security Essentials is up and running.
Life is good!
Would this be a good spot to create a restore point?
Oh Baby!!!
All the updates were successful overnight and Service Pack 3 was ready for me to download this morning!!!
AND YES, I'M SUCCESSFULLY UPDATED TO SP3!!!!!!!!!
WA-HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I couldn't have done it without your help!
I'm currently insalling Internet Explorer 8. This is what I need to get the Microsoft Essential Security.
It was a successful download of Internet Explorer 8.
After the re-boot, I can get Microsofts Security Essentials.
Tried getting MSE. This is the error I got:
CanCan not complete the installation. Says I'm missing a filter manager roll up package to complete the installation. I must first download this required package.
The error code: 0x8004FF56
I think were are close. It's a successful install. Now re-booting.
I'm still at SP2. I need SP3 now.
That's next!
On my System Properties, it tells me I have SP2 installed.
The big blue Security Center is up...
Tells me the Firewall and automatic updates are on, but I don't have Virus Protection yet.
Alright! That wet well. Told me to re-boot...
The before booting up, it asks me to Help Protect My PC by turning on Automatic Updates now.
After the re-boot, it had more updates. Looks like SP2 is going in. Should take a litte while.
Those were successfully installed.
Currently re-booting.
Now it's stating 0% when I put my cursor over the icon...
And now a minute later, it's stating 66%
Another minute later, it says the updates are ready to be installed.
Wish me luck!
On the re-start...
I've got a new icon in the lower right hand tray.
It's downloading updates and has stalled at 17%.
That first installation was a success and now the XP is currently being re-started.
The fix I tried gave me an error...
said my operating system is not supported.
The Windows Update agent successfully installed.
I was then alerted to an update that was ready.
It's the Background Intelligent Transfer Service. The updates for that are installing.
Yes, I left it on overnight. No updates.
I'm not sure if Microsoft knows I exist.
I did not have to type in the activation code.
This installation was from the re-installation disc we got when we bought it from Dell.
The latest attempt was to install KB873377:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873377
The setup error states that the version of Internet Explorer I have installed doesn't match the update I am trying to install.

I thought I was close...
but no cigar.
I still can not install SP1 to get to SP2 to get to SP3 so I can get Microsoft Security Essentials anti-virus.
Is it possible that I need to download java to read any of these downloads that I've tried?
Hi Wrinkles!
Yes, very nice board here. Very helpful indeed!
Bruce A. Thompson had reco'ed ACER products in the past, so when my daughter's HP laptop crapped out in it's second year of life, we got her an ACER laptop and she's been happy with it.
Newegg's site will let you select the components you want, then show you what meets your needs within the priceline you choose.
Watch for sales:

Just recently I did some upgrades to my desktop pc. Went from a 7200RPM hard drive, to a Western Digital 10,000RPM Velociraptor hard drive and also went from 2GB's of memory to 8GB.
So I know my pc is fast, but I also have fast Comcast internet speed:.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/2432756565.png
What are your current download/upload speed scores?
A fast computer won't help very much if you're using an AOL dial-up modem. LOL. Like someone else here mentioned, there are different speeds you can get from your internet provider.
Dang...
Still get the same error. Still wants me to have SP1 at a minimum.
I'll scout around the MS site to see what I can find. Might have to go back to that link you gave.
Oh nutz...
Tried to run the SP3 file and got that same error message:
Setup has detected the version of the Service Packinstalled on your system is lower than what is necessary to apply this hotfix.
At minimum, you must have Service Pack 1 installed.
So then I tried to get in to Microsoft's website and I'm in!
Something must have worked as I couldn't get on Microsoft's site before.
I'm at the MS download site trying to download SP3 straight from their site.
It's a new day. 14 posts remain.
Just has my stooopid moment of the project...
The SP1 was a "zip" file.
When I opened it on the XP desktop, it asked me where I wanted it unzipped to.
I said the C drive.
Mistake--- as it said I didn't belong in there and it was smart enough to stop me from going in there.
I went back to the desktop zip file and this time, unzipped it to the desktop.
Looks like I successfully upgraded both SP1 and SP2 which came along in the zip file and it told me to "Finish" and then it re-started the computer for me.
Now that it's re-booted, I checked the System Properties and it shows Microsoft Windows XP home Edition Version 2002, but doesn't show that SP1&2 are on there.
How can I check to see if the Service Packs are on the computer before trying to add that SP3 file again?
The big SP3 file I carried over on the thumb drive to the XP computer was a good file...
so I saved it to the XP desktop.
I then searched with Google for a Windows XP SP1 file.
I found it on Microsoft's site and it wasn't a typical download.
Microsoft wanted it to send it to my email on the Win 7 computer, which I did. Then I copied it to the thumb drive and brought it to the XP computer and also transfered it to the XP desktop.
I'm going to try and see if I can run those two files.
If I'm right, they should work.
If not, I'll come back to retrieve your SP1 link and carry it back over to the XP computer.
Really appreciate all your help today.
Aarrrghhh...
Dang.
It opened the whole SP3 file.
Then gave me this setup error:
Setup has detected the version of the Service Packinstalled on your system is lower than what is necessary to apply this hotfix.
At minimum, you must have Service Pack 1 installed.
Earlier, I copied the Service Pack 1(a) to the thumb drive and tried to install it on the XP computer.
What I copied before was a "live" program that came from Microsoft's website and I can't run it from there.
I need a hotfix with Service Pack 1, similar to the SP3 hotfix, that I can run from the thumb drive and not Microsoft's website.
Then I can re-run the SP3 hotfix.
That experiment didn't work out...
I shut the XP down, then move the external to a different USB port.
Tried to re-start and the XP would not boot up.
Had to turn the power strip off.
While the power was off, I unplugged the external.
Re-booted the XP and it booted up ok.
I'll empty the thumb drive now.
I don't think I have burning capabilities...
the thumb drive is 512MB.
The SP3 is 316MB.
I can transfer what is on the thumb drive to the Win7 hard drive, then empty it if the external won't work.
The SP3 download is much bigger then the SP1 download...
so I can not put it on the thumb drive.
I put it on the 1TB external I have.
When I put the external into the XP computer, it did not recognize the new hardware.
I have to shut it down first. It also didn't give me the option of "safely remove device".
I'm thinking shut the XP computer off, to switch USB ports with the external.
I can not just download straight to SP3...
I have to download SP1, then SP2, then I can download SP3.
So I did like you suggested.
Copied SP1 to the thumbdrive on the Win7 computer, then brought it to the XP computer.
When I open the SP1 file off the thumbdrive on the XP computer, it tries to extract the file from Microsoft's website. It must be a "live" file (for lack of a better terminology).
I can't do that because I can not open Microsoft's site on the XP computer due to the lack of Internet Explorer 8.
That sounds like a great idea!
Ok, I've done all that...
I'm sure I checked that earlier, but I know I did not do a proper re-start.
I have not recieved any updates.
It is set on automatic. Not sure when it will send the updates. Been about 2 hours so far.
I did not set it to automatic updates.
It already was set.
So far...
I have is Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 with no service packs.
I can not get IE8 unless I at least have SP2 which I don't have.
Seems like I need IE8 to navigate on Microsoft's website.
Re-loaded question...
On our older computer, we were successfully able to re-install Windows XP from our original disc.
We can get on the internet. We don't seem to get to stay there very long.
It appears as though we are running Internet Explorer 6.
We are being prompted to get Internet Explorer 8 as the only way to get to Microsoft's website to get the updates and Microsoft Security Essentials is to go there with IE8.
I downloaded IE8 to the desktop. When we try to run the download, we get iesetup-Entry PointNot Found error.
Says the entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHL WAPI.dll
Any ideas?
Nope...
Shelly is a welcher.
They will be tough workouts, but they do find a few spare minute for sunbathing.
The University of Iowa rowing team is going down to Cocoa Beach for winter workouts on Saturday...
my daughter and her teammates will undoubtedly be on the beach.
Wow!
Score one for me...
About a month ago, my modem died.
Comcast tech came out and replaced it. Told him my printer now reads out as disconnected. He tried to re-install it, but no go. Said maybe I need a new cable.
Called Comcast back as we were still getting internet failures and a different tech came out. When he was done putzing around, he also tried to re-install my printer. Couldn't get it. Also said maybe the cable went bad.
Now with my new Windows 7, I gave it a try.
Did a simple Google search and found this:
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Software-Drivers-e-g-Windows-8/missing-OfficeJet-t45-print-driver-for-Windows7/td-p/463525
HURRAY for me too!
Maybe Comcast techs should learn how to Google.
Yesterday, I sent a message to IHub Admin Dan, who in turn forwarded it off to IHUB Admin Shelly.
Hi Flobewan...
can not re-boot with any of the options.
When I try to start it up, it seems to want to try and startup as the Windows XP screen comes up, then goes to the blue screen of death with this same message:
STOP: c0000218 (Registry File Failure)
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent or not writable.
It's an old Dimension 4500.
