That experiment didn't work out...

I shut the XP down, then move the external to a different USB port.

Tried to re-start and the XP would not boot up.

Had to turn the power strip off.

While the power was off, I unplugged the external.

Re-booted the XP and it booted up ok.

I'll empty the thumb drive now.
