Veteran Trainer Roach Helping Mold Tyson Into Shape
USA TODAY - January 21, 2003
Freddie Roach has heard all the stories about new pupil Mike Tyson.
He's heard how Tyson refuses to listen to trainers, how he slacks off in the gym and how sometimes he doesn't even bother to show up so he can slack off.
''I was warned not to take it by friends. I was told I'm crazy. But I wanted to give Mike a chance and see how he treats me,'' Roach says.
So after three weeks of working with the mercurial former heavyweight champ in Las Vegas, how's it going?
''It's been nothing but respect,'' Roach says. ''It's really going well. Everything I ask him to do he does. We get up in the morning to run and I go over to his house at 5:30 and he's waiting for me. We go to the gym and work the mitts. We're up to 10 rounds a day. (Today) we start sparring. I think he really wants to do this.''
''This'' is fight, something Tyson hasn't done too much of in recent years. Roach is Tyson's third trainer in as many fights, following two other highly regarded cornermen in Ronnie Shields and Tommy Brooks. Now it's up to Roach to prepare Tyson for a Feb. 22 fight vs. Clifford Etienne (Showtime), Tyson's first bout since Lennox Lewis left him lying on the canvas like a lump of dirty laundry last June. A Tyson win means a Lewis rematch later this year.
Tyson adviser Shelly Finkel is pleased the pairing is working. ''He told Freddie he'll listen to what he says,'' Finkel says. ''We know saying it and doing it are two different things. But Freddie is a no-nonsense guy, someone who will be firm. So far things are going well.''
Roach says Tyson has his ''good days and bad days'' in the gym but he's always there when he's supposed to be and he's in shape. His weight is down from 244 when they started to 229.
''His moods can change and he's had a couple of bad days where he doesn't want to be there, but when I've pushed him hard, he had no problem,'' Roach says. ''I'm not there to be his buddy and I think he respects that. About a week ago he started throwing up in the 10th round because I was working him so hard. When he was done puking, I told him to finish the round. He swore at me, but he finished the round.''
Tyson had better sacrifice for Roach, because Roach is sacrificing for him. He left his assistants to run his Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles and take care of his 20 pros, including James Toney, Manny Pacquiao, Juan Lazcano and Brian Viloria, while he's working with Tyson.
''I've got five assistants who work for me, and they are doing a good job,'' he says. ''This is a big opportunity for me to train Mike. It pays the bills for a while.''
However, Roach makes it clear he didn't take the gig only for the payday.
''I'm not worried about getting fired. I don't need Mike. I got other guys,'' Roach says. ''If I was here and he wasn't showing up, I wouldn't be here. I have other good fighters who miss me when I am away. I talked to Shelly when we started and told him I don't want to waste my time, and so far I haven't. Mike's been working every day, and I'm having a little bit of fun with it. To bring this guy back, I think I can do it. He has to want to do it, but so far it's heading in that direction.''

SPEAKING
"He is legitimately the best player in the league, and he gets better every night. The amazing thing is that guys are wrapped all over him, but he's so big and strong that he doesn't go down, and doesn't get the calls he should." -- Boston forward Glen Murray on teammate Joe Thornton, who had a goal and two assists for the second consecutive game Monday, a 3-3 tie with Washington.
Brind'Amour could miss three months
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Carolina Hurricanes leading scorer Rod Brind'Amour will need surgery and could miss three months after tearing a tendon in his right hand.
Brind'Amour, who has 14 goals and 23 assists, was placed on injured reserve Tuesday. He was hurt on a first-period faceoff of Monday night's 4-3 loss to St. Louis, although he wound up scoring in the third period.
"I didn't know exactly what was going on, but I felt it kind of pop," he said. "It just kind of gave out."
Things weren't going too well as it is for the defending Eastern Conference champions, who have lost seven straight games and dropped to 13th in the playoff race.
"This is just the way bad years go. You get bad breaks," general manager Jim Rutherford said.
Brind'Amour, a 15-year veteran, is one of the best face-off men in the NHL and a top penalty-killer. He leads the team with 20 points on the power play.
Surgery is needed because "there is potential damage to two fingers if he doesn't get this done," coach Paul Maurice said. "There really is no option. If there was one, he would play and get it fixed at the end of the year. This guy has played with broken bones in his feet. He's played with just about everything you can play with."
Maurice said Josef Vasicek would likely fill Brind'Amour's place on the team's second line, and Kevyn Adams would move up to the third line.
Some of Brind'Amour's penalty-killing time could be filled by 39-year-old captain Ron Francis.
"It's a blow, there is no question about that," Maurice said. "We can't replace him with an individual.
Brind'Amour will also be missed off the ice. The alternate captain is considered one of the hardest workers in the league.
"We can't hang our heads and sit here and sulk because he's gone," defenseman Glen Wesley said.
Rotisserie By The Numbers: All-Star Snubs and Flubs
-----------------------------------------------------
By Craig Rondinone SportsTicker Staff Writer JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The fans and the coaches did another bang-up job picking this season's All-Stars, huh? You just look at some of the players who made the team and are shocked, mystified, stupefied, flabbergasted and downright embarrassed at the choices that were made. You look at some of the names missing from the rosters and say to yourself, "Gee, now I know why two teams in the league just declared bankruptcy, why attendance is down and why hockey is a distant fourth on the popularity chart in the United States."
The NHL just doesn't get it.
What exactly is the criteria for making the All-Star Team? You do not need to have one player from each team (Phoenix, Buffalo and Nashville did not have any players make the cut), but certain guys seem to have made the team just because the NHL wanted their teams to be represented.
I agree that defense should play a role in some of the selections, but do not take a defenseman who is a barely a plus on the season and has not even scored a goal while overlooking defensemen who are in the top 10 in defenseman scoring. Do not leave out the third-highest goal scorer in the league because he is on a terrible team that is partially to blame for his dreadful plus-minus.
And please, although this is a game for the fans, can we not have them have 100 percent of the votes when it comes to selecting the starters? Can we give them 33 percent of the vote and allow general managers and players to also get 33 percent each of the vote, like the NFL does for their Pro Bowl? As you can tell, I am hotter than Craig MacTavish after having a mascot stick his six-foot tongue in his ear all night.
The NHL should ask the most knowledgeable hockey fans on the face of the earth to pick the All-Star teams for them - the fantasy hockey owners. Then the game would be filled with excitement, spectacular saves, electrifying moves and superb skating, while more deserving people would be playing instead of sitting at home watching the contest on the boob tube.
Here are some of the players who made the All-Star teams who should not have and which players should be in their places: Flub: Nikolai Khabibulin, Lightning - Give the fans credit.
Who would have thought they would have chosen a goalie from Tampa Bay? But do not give them too much credit, for "The Bulin Wall" has had many cracks in it this season. His 2.79 goals against average and .903 save percentage are nowhere near the leaders in each category, and he has been especially easy to beat as of late.
Snub: Patrick Lalime, Senators - Lalime has been the backbone of the best team in the Eastern Conference during the first half of the season. He is currently third in the NHL in victories and shutouts and ninth in GAA.
Flub: Brian Leetch, Rangers - Leetch is always a perennial All-Star, although you would have thought that fans would have noticed by now that Leetch has not played the past month and a half because of his mysterious bruised ankle.
Snub: Tom Poti, Rangers - His 34 points are not only tied for fourth among defensemen, but they lead the Rangers, surprising since Eric Lindros, Petr Nedved, Bobby Holik and Pavel Bure are on the team. He has played extremely well in Leetch's absence.
Flub: Scott Stevens, Devils - Yes, New Jersey is playing great hockey and should be well-repped at the All-Star Game. Yes, Stevens is one of the better defensive defensemen in the game, even if he is a senior citizen. But he has no goals, just six assists, and for as sound as he is defensively, he is only a plus-6 on the season.
Snub: Dan Boyle, Lightning - After finally escaping Mike Keenan's doghouse in Florida, Boyle has emerged as a super-solid offensive defenseman with Tampa Bay. He has seven more goals and 18 more assists than Stevens, and his plus-minus is exactly the same.
Flub: Jeremy Roenick, Flyers - Philadelphia is having a great season so far, so some Flyer has to make the team, so why not their leading scorer, right? Roenick has 32 points and is a plus-13 in 44 games. Nice, but not what you would label an All-Star.
Snub: Olli Jokinen, Panthers - "The Joker," like Boyle, escaped Keenan's doghouse and is having a solid season, although unlike Boyle, he is still with Keenan in Florida. He is being worked to death by "Iron Mike", playing 20 minutes per night, and has scored 23 goals in 45 contests while playing with the likes of Jaroslav Bednar and Valeri Bure.
Flub: Jeff O' Neill, Hurricanes -- His nine power-play goals are OK. His minus-13 rating is not. Having 36 points in 48 games is OK. Being tied for 51st in the league in scoring is not.
Snub: Alexander Mogilny, Maple Leafs - One of fantasy hockey's biggest cancers has stayed relatively healthy this season and has 49 points in 43 games to show for his injury-freeness. He should be on the squad.
Flub: Patrick Roy, Avalanche - Roy is a god, but he has been a mere mortal this season. His inconsistent goaltending was one of the reasons Bob Hartley got fired. Even Roy acknowledges that he probably should not have made the team. The fans went 0-for-2 with their netminder choices.
Snub: Dan Cloutier, Canucks - His 24 wins are second in the NHL and are one of the reasons why Vancouver has been among the elite in the Western Conference this season.
Flub: Eric Brewer, Oilers - I know he is an underrated defenseman and I know he has improved offensively (16 points) and I know it would be nice for Edmonton to have a player on the team. Still, this pick makes fans want to yawn.
Snub: Andy Delmore, Predators - How about Nashville gets a rep at the game? Does the NHL have something against country music and grits? This power-play specialist leads all defensemen with 15 goals, and his 12 power-play goals are more than any other defenseman has scored this season overall.
Flub: Jarome Iginla, Flames - Last season's scoring champion should be at the All-Star Game...if he was having a superstar season, but he is not. He has been nagged by injuries and has been a shell of the 2001-02 version of himself. If you picked him first overall in your draft your fantasy team is probably in languishing in last place.
Snub: Pavol Demitra, Blues - He has 46 points in 44 games. If you average over a point a game in the NHL nowadays, you should be in.
Flub: Teemu Selanne, Sharks - For the second year in a row, San Jose fans have stuffed the ballot box to make sure "The Finnish Flash" made the team, and for the second year in a row he deserved to make it as much as Tie Domi did. Thirty-seven points in 46 games is nothing special.
Snub: Milan Hejduk, Avalanche - Would baseball not include the seventh-ranked RBI man in their All-Star Game? Would the NBA shun their seventh-leading scorer in their All-Star Game? Somehow, Hejduk did not make the cut, even though he is seventh in the NHL in scoring. I guess too many Colorado players had already made the team.
I did not even mention "Tricky" Dick Tarnstrom, Daniel Alfredsson and Sergei Zubov. They all have strong cases for making their respective teams. Let's hope some players sit out and allow some of the more deserving players to make the trip.
Penalty Shots: The Mario Lemieux Award for excellence at getting injured this week goes to Philly's Justin Williams, who tore his ACL and is now probably done for the season. He was not giving fantasy owners much to chew on in the way of offense lately, anyway, so this does not exactly rock the foundations of fantasy hockey. This just means more ice time for the mediocre Joe Sacco and Mark Greig. Wonderful.

NHL suspends Prospal for two games and Turco for one
TORONTO (AP) -- Tampa Bay Lightning forward Vaclav Prospal was suspended for two games and Dallas Stars goaltender Marty Turco was suspended for one Tuesday because of separate altercations.
Prospal was penalized for cross-checking Ottawa's Chris Neil on Monday. He will lose $17,222.22 in salary, with the money going to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
Prospal will miss games against Montreal and Dallas, and be eligible to return Jan. 25 at Nashville.
Turco was suspended for high-sticking Colorado's Peter Forsberg on Monday. Turco will lose $3,564,81 in salary and miss Wednesday night's game against Columbus.

Islanders and Rangers have near fights twice during warmups
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -- The New York Rangers and New York Islanders nearly came to blows twice during the pregame warmup Tuesday night.
The original altercation began at center ice when Rangers forward Matthew Barnaby and Islanders forward Arron Asham jawed at each other and Barnaby appeared to make some contact.
It didn't take long for all the players on both teams to converge on the center ice logo and move as a pack toward the benches. Rangers captain Mark Messier was in the middle of the group.
Rangers enforcer Sandy McCarthy was soon paired up with Islanders counterpart Eric Cairns. The pair exchanged heated words and the scrum broke up shortly after -- but not for long.
Cairns and McCarthy came together again at the red line moments later, this time on the opposite end of the ice near the penalty boxes. They jabbed their sticks at each other's causing at least one blade to break off and sail through the air.
Again both teams' full complement of players got together. Cairns and McCarthy appeared to come close to dropping their gloves, but neither seemed to want to be the first to do it.
No coaches or NHL officials were on the ice at the time and no penalties were issued.
There was already more attention than usual leading up to this meeting between the longtime neighborly rivals.
Bryan Trottier, arguably the most popular Islanders player in team history, returned to Nassau Coliseum as the head coach of the Rangers for the first time.
Trottier tops the Islanders' career lists with 1,123 games played and 1,353 points. He ranks second to Mike Bossy with 500 goals.
Trottier's No. 19 jersey, which he wore for 15 seasons on Long Island and won four Stanley Cups in, was retired by the Islanders in October 2001. He returned in a visitor before as a player with Pittsburgh and as a Colorado assistant coach.
He was hired as Rangers coach during the offseason.

Thrashers score five goals in first period to set team record
ATLANTA (AP) -- The Atlanta Thrashers scored a team-record five goals in the first period against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night, taking a 5-2 lead on the Central Division leaders.
Dany Heatley, playing on his 22nd birthday, had two of the goals for the Thrashers, and Dan Snyder, Brad Tapper and Marc Savard also scored.
Savard's goal came after a brilliant play by Atlanta defenseman Andy Sutton, who snared the puck out of the air with his left hand near the blue line, then dropped it before passing it to Savard.
The Blues, who played Monday night at Carolina, started backup goaltender Fred Brathwaite, but he gave up three of the goals on six shots. Brent Johnson came in and allowed two more goals, and St. Louis coach Joel Quenneville sent Brathwaite back on the ice.
The Thrashers have scored four goals in a period four times -- the last Dec. 26, 2000, against Toronto.
Those past two posts reinforce my points.
The company must be of the opinion that they are fairly traded, therefor fairly valued, as per that email reply.
Also, it certainly sounds like they are not interested in any sort of 'promotion' or marketing of the stock itself. Rare for the bulletin board and not something that most penny investors would be happy with. I would think that the average otc penny player would not be interested in this stock since the company does not engage in any traditional activities that create a little appreciation or volatility in the share price.
The end result, no volume, no market attention, no trading opportunities. Virtra is definitely for the buy and hold crowd, and will one day reward those who are invested. The only problem is that the timeframe seems to be quite long.
I am sure that for players like me there will be opportunity to get aboard when the ship sets sail, and in the meantime try to make a few bucks trading other more volatile stocks.
Best of luck to all, patience is the key in this one.
I think that 'invite' is the selected verbage because OTClive represents other comapnies as well, but only invites a few to each of its events. I agree, it is not any sort of an honor to be 'innvited', it just means that they probably footed the bill for the most complete and extensive IR/PR package OTClive offers. Which, hopefully for those invested will prove to have the greatest impact on share price.
I would expect that if a company hired OTClive for less services or spent less money there, they would not be 'invited' to such events.
I think we agree on the issue and both know that the choice of words is certainly intended to create a sense of privelege or puffery for those that read the PR.
Can we WAG on it? ha ha ha
Yes, OTClive is paid PR/IR for all of the companies presenting. I do not know of any PR/IR companies that do not get apdi for their service though, so I'm not sure I understand your issue with that.
I do understand your frustration trying to get third party info and verification. Hence, my guerrilla due dilignce. I believe you will not find any info under the name Veltex Transportation, as I believe it is just an O/A name to consolidate the operations of the warehousing and trucking, both of which have been known under different names and may still carry. ie. B&W warehousing which I believe is now veltex's warehouse operation.
Frustrating when there is nothing you can do but wait.
I may just do that. I am still sorting out my schedule and will see what time I can get out of Boston. Thanks for the direction.
The annual financials are now on SEDAR for anyone who happens to chance accross this board. They are not good. Millions of dollars in deficit. Millions of dollars in continued losses from failed projects. Something like $30,000canadian revenue in the entire 6 year history of the company.
Not much hope or hype left in this stock.
An understandable position that I am sure many share with you. The risk and reward are both higher at the present, but I ceratinly do not begrudge anyone from either sitting out or waiting until more info becomes available.
Best of luck to you. I hope we both make some $$$$ here.
I believe it can be directly attributed to unprofessionalism and inexperience at doing some things in a proper business manner. I don't doubt Matin's good intentions or progress to date, just his abilities to market the stock and company to the public. A good leader knows when to hand the reign of a job over to someone more qualified to do that job. Hopefully Matin has done so by getting OTClive involved. I know they do offer complete IR packages, hopefully that is what he has hired them to do, I suspect it is. Hence the reason for the seemingly redundant PR stating their involvement, which I believe OTClive was the souce of origin, not VLVT.

VLVT board is now 81st on the hot boards list here on Ihub. I think that is a calculation based upon the number of different posters here, the number of people who have this board boardmarked, and the number of posts.
Don't you think it is inevitable that if Matin continues to go to public forums of professional investors, that he will be forced to fulfill his promises?
Each time he shows up and makes his claims, he expands his liablility and onus to fulfill them.
I suspect that if he was intentionally atttempting to mislead, or did not feel he could fulfill his claims, he would try to keep a lower profiile and not continue to increase publicity and the spotlight on himself and VLVT. Does that make sense?
Just my 50 cents worth, but it seems logical.
I am not an investor in this stock yet, but I would like to offer those of you who are my sometimes bias and often incorrect opinion of a few things here.
First, I like this stock and may take a position in it soon
Second, it appears that MGMT has done a poor job with investor relations. The key being RELATIONS.
Third, MGMT seems to be directing their efforts more at developing priducts at this time, then towards marketing the products or selling stock.
This is somewhat good news in my opinion, as most otc companies are far more preoccupied with firstly selling stock, and secondly marketing whatever hype or products they have. That is one of the things that makes this a unique stock, is that it almost seems like they do not want to be a publicly traded company or do not see any benefit or advantage to it.
I would suggest that for the sake of investors and shareholders, the commpany needs to at this time, start to make a more concerted effort to enlsit the services of professional marketing and investor relations companies. Now I know that this suggestion will not sit well with purist investors who are waiting for this company to strike a billion dollar contract and all of a sudden show up on the radar of wallstreet, but it is a start in that direction which will help them get attention, increase their cash position, increase shareprice, and possibly create some market interest that will help lead to contract interest.
That's just my quick suggestion but as I watch this stock weekly and wait until I get the 'feeling' it is time to buy in, I see that as an avenue that needs to be explored by the company.
FWIW, the ask just jumped up from the .036 it was at all day to .045 again
The bid hasn't followed yet, but if VLVT continues to release positive news, and OTClive starts with this marketing the way it appears they are going to, increased volume and price are inevitable.
As I have not been here on Ihub for long, I just happened to read a few of the boards. I must say that this board is well worth the read of the few short posts on it. It is a brief banter between Matt and Joe and is from over a year and a half ago, but it is so funny because nothing appears to have changed, ha ha ha.
http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=832
Just read the first few posts, its really quite funny.
Good Idea. I jst have to find Leonard's house in Great Neck, ha ha ha. I just found Boston on the damned map.
The only thing that strikes me odd in that release is that it states in the list of audience members that 'investors' are included, and I believe that it has been posted here that this is not the case.
I will be on the east coast thursday, and if investors are allowed to attend I will make the trip down from Boston to NY to attend.
Has anyone heard if investors are able to attend, or should I go and crash the party anyhow?
The Vet,
there is a new board started here on ihub, and one of the topics discussed there in recent days was GMXX. Please come over there and take a look.

only 73,000 shares so far. Heck I own more than that, ha ha ha.
I have free tickets to the biggest private superbowl party in the city and I will not be here for it. I'll be somewhere between Boston and Chicago at the time. Sucks to be me. ha ha ha
I always do so look forward to superbowl week, it is the one week of the year I can bank on my satellite card going all glitchy.
Any friendly wagers on the upcoming game?
not much volume early today.

Flyers RW Williams to undergo season-ending knee surgery
----------------------------------------------------------
PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - Philadelphia Flyers right wing Justin Williams is scheduled to undergo reconstructive left knee surgery on Thursday and will miss the rest of the season, the team announced Monday night.
Williams was injured in the second period of Saturday's 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay. Team officials hoped he could rehabilitate the knee, but the 21-year-old sought a second opinion in Toronto.
"Justin talked with another surgeon up in Toronto and he has decided to have the surgery now rather than waiting until the end of the season," team physician Dr. Peter DeLuca said.
DeLuca will perform the 90-minute procedure to rebuild Williams' ACL at Hahnemann University Hospital.
"It's usually a long rehab period, anywhere between four months up until even eight months until he strengthens his leg muscles," DeLuca said.
While DeLuca left open the possibility of Williams returning for the playoffs, general manager Bob Clarke dismissed it.
A 2000 first-round draft pick, Williams is tied for fifth on the team in scoring with eight goals and 15 assists in 40 games.
Flames win game but their mascot loses his tongue
Craig MacTavish and the Edmonton Oilers couldn't stop the Calgary Flames. The best they could do was silence the opposing mascot.
Harvey the Hound, the Calgary Flames' 6-foot-6, 200-pound mascot, got too close to the Oilers' bench and under the skin of Coach MacTavish.
Already dealing with an impending 4-3 loss to the Flames on Monday night, MacTavish answered Harvey's repeated taunts with a yank that ripped out the white dog's foot-long red tongue.
The Flames let a four-goal lead turn into a nail-biter as Edmonton's Brian Swanson, Marty Reasoner and Mike York scored in a span of less than four minutes late in the game, but the Oilers couldn't get the tying goal and lost their second straight.
Calgary escaped with a win, but Harvey didn't get away so lucky.
"(Harvey) was in a place he shouldn't have been," Flames spokesman Peter Hanlon said.
In other NHL games, it was Washington 3, Boston 3; Minnesota 2, Anaheim 1 in overtime; Montreal 3, Florida 2; St. Louis 5, Carolina 3; Columbus 5, Chicago 1; Tampa Bay 6, Ottawa 2; Dallas 1, Colorado 1; and Phoenix 3, San Jose 1.
With 37-year-old Dave Lowry added to Calgary's top line, Craig Conroy had two goals and an assist, and Jarome Iginla set up three goals. Lowry had his first goal of the season and two assists.
Chris Drury also scored for the Flames.
It was the first three-point game of the season for both Iginla and Conroy, who have spent all season trying to find their form from last season.
"He's gritty, he plays with an edge and that made a difference on our line," Conroy said of Lowry. "He's an experienced guy whose played 1,000 games in the league and he knows what he's got to do out there."
