Teslas would be even safer if the CEO hadn't announced in 2016 that the company’s goal was to enable a fully autonomous trip from Los Angeles to New York by the end of next year.
According to Muskrat, the trip would occur "without the need for a single touch" from the driver, including recharging the car’s battery.
Selling more cars means you can have lower margins.
Tesla has slashed margins repeatedly this year in a desperate effort to move more units.

X is still worth something, but not for the people running it. Boss Linda Yaccarino is set to present her plans for the social network formerly known as Twitter to bankers holding nearly $13 billion of its debt, the Financial Times reported. Looming over talks is the likelihood that X’s value is substantially less than even that figure.
Despite Musk’s big pronouncements about pushing into subscriptions, X has historically relied on advertising, which contributed over 90% of revenue when it was a public company. But that business is spiraling, and the platform’s shifting policies could threaten more branding deals. In July, Musk posted that cash flow was negative because of a 50% drop in advertising sales.
Put it all together, and X isn’t just worth less than Musk paid for it, but likely less than its debt. Assume that the company’s revenue last year was $4.7 billion, based on results before it was taken private. If advertising has dropped by half, then this year’s sales should be a bit over $2.5 billion. Put that on the same enterprise-value-to-sales multiple as Snap, which is down to a mere 3 times, and X is worth around $8 billion.
The company is so far covering its hefty interest payments of $300 million per quarter, and Yaccarino sees profitable days ahead. But between Musk’s impromptu product shifts and the need to woo back advertisers, her task is daunting. If things deteriorate further, the company’s bankers - already nursing billions in on-paper losses - face the prospect of taking back the keys to a diminished platform that is worth less than even their claim on it. Like a financial black hole, X threatens to consume most of whatever value it once had.
X must pay $1.1 million in legal fees for ex-Twitter execs
A judge has ruled that X, the platform previously known as Twitter, must pay $1.1 million in legal fees associated with the investigations of the platform that unfolded during Elon Musk’s buyout of the platform last year, according to a report from Bloomberg.
As noted by Bloomberg, Delaware Chancery Court Judge Kathaleen St. J. McCormick ruled in favor of former Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal, former lead policy officer Vijaya Gadde, and other executives, as Twitter “violated its duties to cover legal expenses generated by their work for the company.”
Elon Musk fired Agrawal and other high-level leaders once he took over the company and after Twitter sued Musk for attempting to back out of his agreement for the $44 billion acquisition.
In April, Agrawal and Gadde filed a lawsuit against X for allegedly failing to pay for their legal bills, including bills for Gadde’s appearance before the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. X has only paid around $600,000 of the amount owed, Bloomberg reports, with the company’s lawyer saying X officials got “sticker shock” after they saw the “quite excessive” $1.1 million legal bill from Gadde’s lawyers.
While Judge McCormick agreed that $1.1 million is a lot of money, she still ruled in the former Twitter executive’s favor. “I have reviewed the amount in question, and although it is high and probably higher than most humans would like to pay, it’s not unreasonable,” Judge McCormick said, according to Bloomberg.”
Judge says Muskrat can be sued for Twitter securities fraud
A federal judge has denied billionaire Elon Musk's request to dismiss a proposed class-action lawsuit alleging he defrauded Twitter investors before buying the company last year.
In a decision released Monday, U.S. District Judge Andrew Carter said Musk must face a lawsuit from shareholders who sold Twitter securities while Musk allegedly concealed his ownership stake in the company. The complaint concerns Musk's failure to disclose a 5% ownership stake in Twitter for 11 days past a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission deadline.
The judge did however dismiss an insider trading claim made against Musk, who rebranded Twitter to X after purchasing the company in a $44 billion acquisition.
Shareholders led by an Oklahoma firefighters pension fund said Musk saved more than $200 million by adding to his Twitter stake and quietly talking with its executives about his plans before finally disclosing a 9.2% stake in April 2022.
The shareholders also claimed they sold Twitter shares at artificially lower prices because Musk concealed what he was doing.
Musk's attorneys have argued that, as CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and founder of The Boring Company and Neuralink, Musk was "one of the busiest people on the planet" and that his failure to abide by the SEC's rules was "inadvertent."
But Judge Carter said he could not infer that Musk was "too busy" to comply with SEC disclosure rules if he could buy millions of shares of stock in Twitter, tweet about the state of Twitter as a social media platform and meet with several Twitter executives and insiders."
The judge also found evidence Musk understood the 5% disclosure requirement, including that he had testified about it under oath and had followed the rules for his other companies including Tesla.
An attorney for the plaintiffs declined to comment.
The SEC requires that investors disclose when they have acquired 5% of a company within 10 days of doing so.
Twitter shares rose 27% April 4, 2022, to $49.97 from $39.31 after Musk revealed his 9.2% stake. Musk's takeover valued Twitter at $54.20 per share.
The plaintiffs had alleged Musk was a temporary insider at the time he bought Twitter stock because he had meetings and communications with Twitter executives. However, Carter threw out the claim, finding there was not enough evidence to suggest Musk had entered into a confidentiality agreement or that he made material decisions for Twitter which would categorize him as an insider.
Tesla store accused of skipping $34,000 in tolls on 20,000 trips
A Tesla store in Colorado may have skipped out on as many 20,000 toll payments, according to a recent lawsuit filed by Northwest Parkway LLC. The company, which operates a toll road near Denver, says the automaker owes it $34,000.
Northwest Parkway is a short section of toll road between Highway E-470 and U.S. Highway 36 just north of Denver. It was apparently used by vehicles with plates registered to a Tesla store in Littleton, Colorado, to the south of the city.
It remains unclear how long the store has been failing to pay tolls, but Autonews reports that the road charges between $1.70 and $5.20 for two-axle vehicles. The alleged figure of $34,000 amounts to exactly 20,000 of the lower-priced tolls.
“Ongoing and continuous use of the Northwest Parkway by the motor vehicle(s) registered to defendant Tesla Inc. constitutes consent and agreement to the terms of use and creates a binding contract between Tesla Inc. and plaintiff Northwest Parkway LLC,” it alleged in its complaint. “The failure to pay Go-Pass toll bills on time is a breach of the contract for use of the Northwest Parkway and subjects defendant Tesla Inc. to additional fees and legal action.”
Since Tesla operates a direct-to-consumer business model, instead of a dealership model, it is on the hook for the actions of the Tesla store in Littleton. And it’s hardly the first time that a company owned by Elon Musk has been accused of failing to pay on time.
In June, a judge approved the eviction of X Corp. (formerly Twitter) from an office in Boulder, Colorado. A notice posted by the landlord in charge of the building said that the company, which was recently purchased by Musk, was $179,000 behind on rent. Another company in the same city sued X Corp. in May for nearly $100,000 saying the social media company owed it for unpaid bills relating to cleaning.

Tesla’s disappointing third-quarter deliveries are giving its closest rival—BYD, the Chinese EV giant backed by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway—an opportunity to swipe top place in the electric car rankings.
Tesla sold 435,000 electric cars last quarter, while BYD sold 431,000 battery-powered electric cars over the same period, leaving a gap of just over 3,000 between the two firms, according to calculations from Bloomberg.
That small difference means that BYD could be close to overtaking its U.S.-based rival when it comes to sales of battery electric cars (BEVs), a huge jump for a company that Tesla CEO Elon Musk once derided as a joke over a decade ago.
BYD is already far ahead when it coms to total sales. Including hybrids, BYD sold over 800,000 cars last quarter, almost twice as much as Tesla, according to Bloomberg.
The Chinese company sold 1.8 million cars last year, over 911,000 of which were BEVs. Tesla, which only sells BEVs, sold 1.3 million cars.
Tesla disappoints
Tesla’s third-quarter sales came in far below analyst expectations. Sales declined by 6.7% from the previous quarter, the first quarterly drop since early 2020.
Musk had previously warned that planned upgrades to manufacturing plants around the world may lead to lower deliveries for the rest of the year.
Yet the company is also facing sluggish demand, pushing it to launch aggressive price wars in both China and the U.S. On Sunday, Tesla announced a new version of its Model Y car for the Chinese market, offering slightly faster acceleration and new ambient lighting at no additional cost from the base model.
The company still hopes to produce 1.8 million vehicles this year, meaning it would need to sell an additional 450,000 cars in the final quarter to meet that goal.
BYD surges
BYD has surged ahead of its competitors in China by selling more affordable electric vehicles, unlike the premium models sold by Tesla and other EV companies like Nio and XPeng. BYD recently unseated Volkswagen as China’s top-selling car brand.
The company is now expanding outside of China, and is now the top-selling EV brand in markets like Thailand, Israel and Singapore. It’s even expanding into more developed markets like Japan and Europe.
Chinese EVs are already transforming the country’s auto industry. China overtook Japan as the world’s largest auto exporter earlier this year, according to official Chinese data. And domestic brands are poised to outsell foreign brands in the Chinese market for the first time this year.
Other car company executives are starting to worry about a possible flood of cheap Chinese EVs. In May, Ford CEO Jim Farley said he saw “the Chinese as the main competitor” when it came to EVs, and called BYD a “very, very impressive company.”
BYD’s backers, like Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, are happy with the company’s booming success. “I have never helped do anything at Berkshire that was as good as BYD,” Charlie Munger, Buffett’s longtime business partner, said in February.
“BYD is so much ahead of Tesla in China,” he added.

X sued over Twitter rebrand in trademark dispute
A Florida-based social media company, X Social Media, is suing Elon Musk’s X, formerly Twitter, for utilizing the X branding.
In what might be one of the more confusing lawsuits circling around Elon Musk, a Floridian company that manages social media platforms for lawyers has struck out at X, formerly Twitter. The lawsuit in question surrounds the sudden rebranding of Twitter, with X Social Media claiming that X Corp is infringing on its trademark.
X Social Media apparently has a federal trademark for X, alongside Meta – formerly Facebook – and Microsoft, among others. The company is suing as they’ve alleged that Musk’s new branding has caused a loss in revenue. X Social Media has also invested a reported $400 million into Facebook and social media campaigns in an effort to reach more customers.
According to the lawsuit, X Corp, Musk’s company, currently dominates Google searches when typing in “X Social Media”. They also say X Corp infringes on X Social Media’s trademark through what Musk’s company applied to do.

Grimes sues Elmo over parental rights
Elon Musk is being sued by ex Grimes over parental rights of their three children.
Grimes filed a “petition to establish parental relationship” on Sept. 29 in a California court, according to court records obtained by Page Six on Tuesday.
The request asks the court to identify the legal parents of a child when they are not married.
The billionaire, 52, and “Oblivion” singer, 35, are parents of three children. Their first son, X Æ A-Xii, arrived in May 2020. In December 2021, they quietly welcomed daughter Exa Dark Sideræl via surrogate.
It was only confirmed in September that the pair secretly had a third child, a boy named Techno Mechanicus, whom they call Tau. The news was revealed in journalist Walter Isaacson’s “Elon Musk” biography.
Isaacson also revealed how Musk initially wooed Grimes with a high-speed Tesla Autopilot ride — while closing his eyes. She gave him a box of animal bones she had collected, and they listened to an hour of history podcasts and audiobooks before going to bed.
Musk and Grimes, real name Claire Boucher, dated on and off from 2018 until their official split in September 2021.
Overall, Musk is a father to 11 children with three different women.
Musk and his ex-wife, Canadian author Justine Wilson, welcomed son Nevada Alexander Musk in 2002. Nevada died of sudden infant death syndrome at only 10 weeks. They went on to use in vitro fertilization to welcome Griffin and Vivian Musk, who are now 18, and triplet sons Kai, Saxon and Damian, who are now 17.
In November 2021, Musk also welcomed twins Strider and Azure with Neuralink director of operations and special projects Shivon Zilis.

Ford engine failure probe expands to 700K+ vehicles
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) on Monday said that it has expanded its probe into Ford Motor Co. engine failures to include more than 700,000 vehicles.
In documents posted Monday, the agency revealed it is upgrading the investigation to an engineering analysis, which is one step closer to a recall.
This now will cover the model years between 2021 and 2022 and includes the F-150 pickup truck, as well as Explorer, Bronco and Edge SUVs and Lincoln Nautilus and Aviator SUVs.
The agency stated that under “normal driving conditions without warning the vehicle may experience a loss of motive power without restart due to catastrophic engine failure” due to a potential faulty valve in 2.7 and 3 liter EcoBoost engines.
“During the investigation, multiple contributing factors were identified which can lead to the fracturing of the intake valves in the subject engines. Ford acknowledged that a fractured intake valve can result in catastrophic engine failure and a loss of motive power and noted that following a valve fracture, a vehicle typically requires a full engine replacement,” NHTSA documents stated.
Ford told the agency that there have been 328 customer complaints, 487 warranty claims and 809 engine exchanges related to those vehicles. In a statement to The Hill, a Ford spokesperson said the company Is “working with NHTSA to support their investigation.”
This comes months after Ford announced that it was recalling more than 140,000 of its vehicles over the risk that their battery monitor sensor could overheat and possibly catch fire.

In a post on “X” on Sunday evening, the world’s richest man published a modified version of the “frustrated boy meme” with a picture of the Ukrainian president’s face.
The post read: “When it’s been five minutes and you haven’t asked for a billion dollars in aid.”
The post came as developments in Washington meant the future of US aid for Ukraine hangs in the balance amid the political wrangling needed to avoid a government shutdown.
Among Ukrainians there was outrage at the post.
Mariana Betsa, ambassador of Ukraine to Estonia, wrote: “Elon, don’t you have empathy? Ukrainians are killed daily by Russia. We are fighting for our lives, for our families, for our country, for our freedom #StandWithUkraine.”
Ukrainian academic Roman Sheremeta, wrote: “I used to admire Musk, but he became a mouthpiece of the Russian propaganda and just indecent human being.”
