New Product Launches Propel Samsung's Digital Convergence Leadership At
LAS VEGAS, Jan 9, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Expanding its digital convergence
leadership, Samsung Electronics today unveils innovative new products at the
international Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2003) in Las Vegas.
Samsung Electronics' products are blurring technological boundaries and creating
new product categories, making the concept of digital convergence a reality in
order to maximize the customer's freedom from the limits of time, space and
location. Based on the strength of Samsung Electronics' product design and
concepts, the company will be honored as a recipient of the 2003 Innovations
Awards during the trade show. Samsung's new products reemphasize the company's
commitment to bringing the power of digital technology to users with a variety
of interests, needs and budgets.
The Samsung products introduced in iCES 2003 include:
54 inch TFT LCD TV: Samsung's groundbreaking 54-inch TFT LCD TV is a
technological marvel. Not only is it the largest TFT LCD TV available on the
market today, but also it is capable of displaying HD contents to its fullest
glory. Its screen, with its 6.22 million pixels, can display 16.7 million colors
at 1920 x 1080 resolution. Less than 12ms response time ensures smooth motion
picture performance.
SCD5000: Samsung's new SCD5000 fulfills many enthusiasts' wishes; a full
featured digital camcorder and a 4.13 mega pixel digital still camera in one
compact unit. Unlike other digital camcorders with still picture capability or
digital still camcorders with motion video capabilities, SCD5000 features
uncompromising functionality as both. When recording digital video, it does so
with 680K CCD powered resolution. When taking digital still pictures, SCD5000
offers users 4.13 mega-pixel resolution at 2272 X 1704 pixels.
HDD Digital Camcorder ITCAM-7: The world's first HDD-based digital camcorder
with a myriad of entertainment capabilities. Instead of using magnetic tape, the
device stores video and audio on a built-in 1.5 GB hard disk drive (HDD). The
footage, compressed in MPEG-4 format, transfers to computers through a USB 2.0
port. The HDD storage saves users from lengthy and cumbersome capturing
processes -- an hour of digital video takes only minutes to capture, compared to
that of conventional tape-based camcorders, which take one hour. In addition to
being a revolutionary camcorder, it also works as a portable media center,
capable of playing MPEG-4 video and MP3 files.
Camera Phone SGH-V205: Perfect for business and family moments, Samsung's new
camera phone lets users take and send digital still images to the person on the
other end of the line. With its embedded digital camera, users can send
high-resolution images over the wireless network.
Smart Phone SPH-i500: Two unique wireless handsets also display Samsung's
convergence leadership. Mobile Intelligent Terminal SPH-i500, a fully
Palm-compatible, 3G-enabled communication device, gives consumers the
convenience of a phone, calendar, address book, and a Web browser in one
convenient, easy-to-use device. And its clamshell form factor makes the design
one of the most compact PDA-handset hybrids available on the market today.
Home Theater System HT-SK6: When two of the biggest names in home entertainment
collaborate to create a home theater system, something very good is bound to
happen. Samsung and Klipsch did just that, by releasing the HT-SK6 home theater
system. The system combines Samsung Electronics' DVD-based home theater system
with progressive scan and 3:2 pull-down technology, with Klipsch's award-winning
Quintet Microsystem horn-loaded 2-way speakers and a 225-watt 10-inch powered
subwoofer. The speakers, which compose world's smallest horn-loaded surround
sound system, can offer excellent surround sound.
The most important advantage Samsung Electronics has over the competition is its
vertically-integrated infrastructure for efficient product development. Such an
efficient structure is the result of Samsung's diverse and balanced product
portfolio ranging from system LSI and memory chips, to flat panel TVs and 3G
wireless handsets. Samsung Electronics produces top-quality core components to
produce top quality-set products. When a new digital convergence device is
developed, the developers can take advantage of Samsung's own TFT-LCD screens,
memory modules, HDDs, ODDs, and system LSIs to give births to top-notch new
products efficiently.
Samsung's continued investment in R&D and design also boosts its products to
another level. Even during the IT downturn, Samsung Electronics sustained
commitment to R& D, investing 1.6, 2.0, and 2.6 trillion Korean Won for years
1999, 2000, and 2002 respectively.
Samsung won five IDEA design awards, tied for most awards won in 2002. Samsung
Electronics' intensive investment in product design resulted in the
establishment the Global Design Network, connecting the Corporate Design Center
in Seoul and design bureaus in San Francisco, Los Angeles, London and Tokyo.
Samsung Electronics' Corporate Design Center alone creates nearly 700 design
concepts every year.
Samsung's leadership in the convergence revolution will keep bringing
revolutionary convergence products to our customers, helping to reshape the
future. The future is to be created by those who welcome challenge and
innovation. Samsung Electronics promises to create the future of the digital
world.

Smartphones Will Dominate Wireless Handset Market By 2008, According to A
OYSTER BAY, N.Y., Jan 8, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- A migration trend is emerging
among wireless users toward feature rich devices that incorporate color screens
and advanced data and messaging applications, including navigation, multimedia
messaging (MMS), and instant messaging, among others.
The primary catalysts of this trend are a combination of factors. For one,
wireless handset penetration continues to grow, moving the market from one
characterized by initial penetration to that of replacement with next generation
devices. Secondly, wireless operators are under increased pressure to drive
higher average revenue per subscriber (ARPU) and are doing so by adding data
services and "infotainment" content available to newer technology handsets.
"With handset makers and wireless operators developing new devices and
compelling services, the replacement cycle will shorten, accelerating growth in
the handset," states Kenil Vora, an analyst with ABI. "Key to maintaining this
growth is the successful deployment - and timing - of feature-rich devices and
related services."
Inside The Numbers
According to a new study by Allied Business Intelligence (ABI) the number of
replacement handsets shipped will grow from 211 million in 2002 to 591 million
units in 2008, representing nearly 85% of all shipments worldwide at that time.
The study, "Wireless Handsets, Smartphones and Communicators -- The Convergence
Of The Cell Phone & PDA And The Emerging 3G Network" also indicates that, of the
estimated 406 million handsets shipped in 2002, only about 15% incorporated
color displays. This number is expected to jump to 97% by 2008.
The new study by ABI outlines the evolution of the handset to a multimedia and
data-centric platform and the progression to the 2.5G and 3G network. The study
provides a thorough examination of trends in the global market for wireless
handsets and offers a realistic outlook on where the industry is headed. The
report covers six global regions and the demand within them. The report also
includes market forecasts for wireless subscribers, handset shipments, Bluetooth
penetration and Java capability through 2008. Where applicable, forecasts are
further segmented by cellular technology platforms.

think tank founded in 1990. ABI publishes research and technology intelligence

Trendsetting Wireless Wares
Jan 8, 2003 (NewsFactor.com via COMTEX) -- Once a self-respecting technophile
acquires the mobile phone that dreams are made of, what is left to buy? Plenty.
"Phones are fashion items these days," Aberdeen Group analyst Isaac Ro told
NewsFactor. And, like any fashion staple, they need the right accessories to
appeal to trendsetters.
The most important wireless accessory also can keep a mobile phone user on the
right side of the law. A headset is crucial, especially in cities like New York,
which banned use of handsets when driving. The headsets with a bud earpiece and
microphone on the wire are popular with executives, according to Deloitte
Consulting partner Mark Peacock.
The Bluetooth Handsfree HBH-20 headset from Sony Ericsson , for example, is
roughly half the size of a credit card. It allows an invisible connection up to
10 meters long and does not require line of sight. The user's phone can be in a
bag, a coat pocket or across the room.
The FreeSpeak Bluetooth headset from Jabra checks in at just under an ounce. The
tiny boom microphone on the smooth silver-and-black headset extends only to
mid-jaw and can be attached to either ear.
Headsets with wrap-around earphones and an arm-type microphone are undesirable,
Peacock said, "because folks look askance at them in airports."
Cool Factor
Keeping one's cell phone handy and safe from being stolen or otherwise
disappearing motivates purchase of another accessory -- the carrying case. While
many phones come equipped with a belt clip these days, it is often cumbersome.
Ro noted that handbag maker Coach now offers attractive leather cell phone cases
for the more popular models.
Motorola (NYSE: MOT) vice president Leslie Dance told NewsFactor that her
company keeps a close eye on what makes a cell phone cool for users --
prioritizing the cool factor in the design process.
Interchangeable face plates, lighted keypads and flashy antennas fall into that
category. Because teenage users are a large and growing segment of the wireless
consumer market, customized looks likely will dominate accessory lines.
It's in the Skin
Japanese handset maker Kyocera (NYSE: KYO) and Wildseed , developer of the
"Smart Skins" concept, are collaborating to develop a CDMA (code division
multiple access) handset targeted specifically toward the youth market.
Wildseed's Smart Skin is touted as "an intelligent faceplate." When combined
with specialized software installed on the phone, it can deliver ringtones,
video clips, pictures, games and Web links related to the skin's design theme.
The companies said their partnership will result in a new wireless phone aimed
at the "young and fun" segment of teens and young adults, expected to be
available in early 2003.
Soft 'Accessories' Sell
Perhaps the most interesting mobile phone wares are the electronic ones.
Inventive ring tones, for example, are popular with younger people. "It's a
business model people are trying to capitalize on," Ro said, referring to
Verizon's recent addition of a line of ringtones that users can download
directly to their phones for minimal cost.
"Another nonphysical 'accessory' proving popular is games," he added. And,
although Dance stressed that games and similar applications are not likely to
attract heavy business users, their popularity in Europe and Asia certainly
indicates that they can garner a lucrative portion of spending on mobile
products and services.
The primary conclusion of a report compiled by Datacomm Research and Phoenican
Ventures is that mobile games are the wireless Internet's killer application,
and third-generation (3G) handsets with color displays are its killer devices.
PDA Gadgets
Phones are not the only wireless devices that users can accessorize. For
example, many consumers choose carrying cases for their Peir PDAs for the same
reasons they do for their phones.
Added functionality represents another group of accessories for PDAs. Keyboards
and memory cards are popular, along with additional cradles so that users can
synchronize data to both their home and office computers. And, of course, there
is that accessory that no PDA user can do without -- one or, better yet, several
replacement stylus pens.
Among business users, Peacock said, "accessory buzz" definitely has diminished
since a year ago, though. "I see my colleagues buying fancier phones," he said,
as opposed to adding gadgets to the phones they already have. For example, color
screens seem to be particularly popular with businesspeople currently.

current eight per cent for private mobile radio trunking services (PMRTS)
operators to facilitate growth in the sector.
Licence fee to be paid to the department of telecom and Wireless Planning and
Coordination (WPC) and the royalty for spectrum together should not exceed five
per cent of the adjusted gross revenue from the current 7.4 per cent - 8.6 per
cent, TRAI said in a statement here.

China's Self Developed 3G to Come into Use by 2004
RELATED SYMBOLS: (QCOM)
BEIJING, Jan 08, 2003 (SinoCast via COMTEX) -- Datang Mobile Telecom expressed
on January 2, 2003 that its third generation mobile communications standard
called TD-SCDMA was under testing, and would be put into use by 2004. Datang
Telecom is the owner of TD-SCDMA.
The TD-CDMA may become a rival of Europe's WCDMA and Qualcomm's CDMA2000.
(TD-SCDMA: Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiplex Address, WCDMA:
Wideband Code Division Multiplex Address, CDMA: Code Division Multiplex Address)
Li Shihe, director of the Technology Department of Datang Mobile Telecom, says,
"The TD-SCDMA will be put into commercial operation by 2004."
The schedule of TD-SCDMA is dependent on when will China Telecom and China
Mobile receive the 3G license, because the State Government will choose one of
them to adopt TD-SCDMA.
Li Shihe adds that many international telecom carriers are testing the
technology, but he refuges to express if TD-SCDMA is compatible with WCDMA. The
TD-SCDMA and WCDMA are based on same technology. Datang Mobile Telecom will in
2003 infuse US$ 120 million on TD-SCDMA, and its German partner Siemens AG also
plans to invest US$ 50 million.

EMC: Renewed industry optimism for 2003 after consolidation in 2002
Jan 06, 2003 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- Following the financial chaos of
2001, 2002 was never going to be an easy year for the cellular industry.
Operators, vendors and investors used 2002 as an opportunity to consolidate and
focus on core strengths and competencies.
"There is renewed optimism in the industry, which will be carried through to
2003 with a greater operator focus on consumer-end services and the marketing
thereof, particularly picture messaging and MMS," comments Michele Scanlon,
Research Director, on EMC's latest research report, EMC World Cellular Review
2003.
Although the slowdown in the industry continued, subscriber figures passed the
one billion milestone in May 2002, which is expected to reach 1.155 billion at
the end of 2002. World ARPU continued to decline and at Q3 2002 was hovering
above USD 31, while outgoing MOU remained stable at 110 minutes per month.
New industry achievements in 2002 reviewed in EMC World Cellular Review 2003:
* MMS services became a commercial reality, and had been deployed in all regions
by the end of 2002 with more than 75 networks launching MMS since March 2002.
* The reality of UMTS came a step closer in 2002 with the first European 3G
launches in Austria and Italy. This was accompanied by the announcement of the
first dual-mode GSM/W-CDMA handsets.
* The first EDGE handset was announced continuing the debate on the deployment
of EDGE with commitments reported from one European GSM-1800 operator.
A slowing global economy meant the numbers of new licences awarded were reduced
in 2002, compared with previous years. 3G licences accounted for 25% of new
licences awarded in 2002, 50% down on 3G licence awards of 2001.
The decrease in licence awards impacted the already depressed infrastructure
market. The number of infrastructure contracts announced in 2002 was 30% down on
2001.
Despite the gloomy scenario, investors strengthened their presence in existing
properties, although they did not expand their portfolios.
Non-core properties were divested with a preference for majority control and
global and regional branding opportunities.
EMC World Cellular Review 2003 is EMC's successful annual review of the industry
now in its third year. The 120-page report analyses activity of the top
investors in the industry, infrastructure contracts, handset developments,
regional round ups including licence awards, new network launches as well as the
status of mobile data deployments.

SPENDING ON WIRELESS SERVICES DRIVES MARKET GROWTH DURING ECONOMIC SLOWDOWN
Arlington, Va. -- Wireless communications spending in the United States will
continue on its growth path in 2002, reaching a total of $116 billion, an
increase of 8.5 percent over 2001, according to the newly released 2002
Telecommunications Market Review and Forecast, an annual publication of the
Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA).
Despite the economic slowdown, consumer spending on wireless services is
expected to expand by 20 percent to $87.6 billion in 2002. Growth in number of
subscribers (including multiple devices), from 177 million in 2001 to 200
million in 2002, will continue to drive wireless end-user spending, highlighting
the fact that mobile communications have become an essential tool for businesses
and an integral component of households as well.
In the future, spending on wireless services will continue to grow at
double-digit rates, fueled principally by personal communications services (PCS)
subscriber growth. Spending on wireless services will total $130 billion in
2005, reflecting a 15.6 percent compound annual growth rate for the 2001-2005
period.
With falling handset prices in 2001, spending on wireless handsets was down 6.1
percent to $8.2 billion. However, the handset market is expected to rebound in
2002 to $9.2 billion, expanding 11.7 percent. Spending on wireless handsets will
grow at low single digit rates through 2005 as replacement sales become a more
important driver of spending than subscriber growth.
The capital expenditure piece of the wireless market experiences the most
dramatic fluctuations in spending as; carriers will typically make significant
investment in new-generation infrastructure, then await subscriber growth to tax
capacity before beginning a new cycle of investment:
The rollout of new licenses boosted capital expenditure (capex) in 2000 and
2001, reaching $19.5 billion in 2001.
In 2002, capex spending is expected to drop 41 percent to $11.5 billion as
carriers establish new services.
Beginning in 2003, a resurgence in capital spending at growth rates in excess of
20 percent per year is predicted as research and implementation of
third-generation (3G) technologies attract resources.
As the overall wireless infrastructure expands and becomes more complex,
spending on services in support of the wireless infrastructure will grow
rapidly, increasing at a 19 percent compound annual rate to $12 billion in 2005,
twice the 2001 level of $6 billion.
"The wireless market is moving into a new phase of development as business users
and consumers look to their wireless devices for high-speed Internet access.
Emerging broadband applications, starting with 2.5G, will provide the
breakthrough to propel the market to the next level, making wireless as robust
an option for vital data communications as it has been for voice," said TIA
President Matthew J. Flanigan.
In addition to the segment-by-segment statistical breakdown and analysis of the
U.S. telecommunications industry, the 2002 Telecommunications Market Review and
Forecast continues to cover market trends in every major industry segment,
including network services, enterprise and consumer market, mobile and wireless
communications, channels and highlighted growth areas in international markets.

A Top 10 Tech List for 2003
RELATED SYMBOLS: (YHOO)(MSFT)(INTC)(EDS)(T)
Jan 03, 2003 (Internet.com via COMTEX) -- For this 2003 watch list, we've
dispensed with adding companies in place of focusing on some
computing/technology trends we think will break out in 2003. While the list is
by no means complete, we also think brevity in watch lists is itself a trend. We
boiled this one down to a Top 10.
1. Wireless Networking and Wi-Fi
After all the hotspots for the 802.11 family of wireless networking that
sprouted in 2002, watch the Wi-Fi wildfire grow more complicated in its
popularity in 2003. From security issues for enterprise Wireless Local Area
Networks, to the threat that Wi-Fi presents to carriers spending big bucks on
competing 3G networks, wireless networking will be the hot general trend in the
coming year. To quote Gus Venditto, editor-in-chief of the internet.com and
Earthweb networks, look for the gaps between 802.11's broadband hotspots to be
plugged with 3G narrowband; watch for widespread adoption of dual-mode wireless
access on the heels of Intel's release of its wireless-friendly Banias CPU .
2. WLAN security
The Achilles heel of Wi-Fi's runaway popularity, WLAN security is already a hot
topic among enterprise network planners. But they're doing more talking than
spending on WLAN security products as they ponder how to safely throw open their
data and corporate applications to wireless access. Hence, we expect to hear
more about makers of WLAN security, such as Trusted Gateways that provide
authentication and provisioning services for wireless access nodes. Look for
personal Wi-Fi users to get more interested in buying their own LAN security
software products.
3. Outsourcing/Managed Services
AT&T, IBM, EDS and a swath of smaller players are making outsourcing just too
tempting for CIOs that have a mandate to control network costs. With discounting
for these services brewing among India-based outsourcing and managed hosting
companies, we think a price war could be break out in 2003 as IT budgets remain
tight. Companies serving the mid to small-business market could see continued
demand for dedicated server-hosting, monitoring, patching, as well as managed
security and virtual data backup.
4. Networked Storage
This could easily have fallen under the outsourced topic. But with the cost of
storage systems falling, on top of major tech companies helping enterprise
networks virtualize their storage needs, look for the trend to grab its own
share of the tech spotlight in 2003.
5. Open Source Goes Enterprise Wide
With the Linux open source operating system gaining in use among big enterprise
systems (especially among financial services firms), and big names behind the
concept such as IBM, look for an acceleration of open source in corporations.
There's also a major trend among open source advocates to position their
respective software beyond the open source community and on to the enterprise
market. Watch for heady growth of PHP, Apache, Mozilla, Bugzilla, to name a few
open source successes.
6. Paid Content
Since 2002 was the year that heretofore free content went behind a paid
firewall, it makes sense that 2003 will be the year that all those accounts
start to pay off. We've been past believers in the rise of micropayment
technology as payment systems and digital cash evolve. Under the paid content
trend, look for more pro and con arguments about micropayments in 2003.
7. Audio/Video Blogs
This may sound a bit far-fetched but we already hear the din from those
self-styled "true visionary" types about blogs that talk. With all the new
consumer-focused audio/video software in the hands of Joe Q. Public, it's not a
stretch to see blogs talking and dancing in the near future. Can't you see the
result of RealProducer or Microsoft moviemaker in the hands of blog nuts?
8. Enterprise IM
Can this trend get any hotter? If only to watch the battle among AOL, MSN and
Yahoo! to grab a piece of the expanding pie for designing secure IM systems for
enterprise networks, enterprise-wide deployment of Instant Messaging is hot
enough. But there will be much more going on with enterprise IM, as developers
make strides with text-to-speech and video over IM platforms.
9. Interactive TV
A perennial trend list item, we know. But based on the advances that digital
cable systems made in 2002, we see increasing forms of two-way communications
over the tube and with cable modems in 2003, especially with sports programmers.
10. The "Return" of Push
This dovetails with the expansion of speedy wireless networks and networked
mobile devices, all of which deploy "push" technology to send information,
photos and video to the next generation of smart cell phones. Push refers to
more than getting nifty news updates on your PC without having to call for them
with your browser. It's about pushing mini-applications out to mobile devices or
to IM clients that sit on computer desktops at home and work, bypassing clunky
Web browsers. As the multi-messaging (MMS) wave hits America following its
spread across Europe and Asia where wireless networks are more advanced, look
for more companies deploying push technology to share the big Web services
spotlight.

China's 3G Wireless Ambitions Delayed
RELATED SYMBOLS: (QCOM)(A)
Jan 03, 2003 (Internet.com via COMTEX) -- China is developing a competitive 3G
standard, known as TD-SCDMA, as a rival to Europe's WCDMA standard and
Qualcomm's CDMA2000. But a report says the new Chinese wireless standard won't
be ready until 2004, at the earliest.
Reuters on Thursday quoted Li Shihe, chief technology officer at Datang Mobile
Communications Equipment, saying China's 3G standard will not be deployed for at
least another year.
China Telecom and China Netcom have yet to receive licenses, which would
sanction the construction of 3G wireless networks throughout China. For
international telecommunications firms vying for contracts, it is essential that
the new Chinese wireless standard has been fully tested, and ready for widescale
commercial deployment.
Datang's parent company has not said whether TD-SCDMA will be compatible with
Europe's WCDMA on Qualcomm's CDMA2000, but the report said Datang will spend
$120 million to develop the technology this year, and its German partner Siemens
AG will invest $50 million on the standard this year.
TD-SCDMA, stands for Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access,
and could generate billions in licensing, construction and other wireless
service contracts.
China Unicom, China Mobile and other Chinese telecommunications firms are
expected to be granted 3G licenses based on the standard later this year, or
perhaps in early 2004.
One U.S.-based firm involved with wireless testing and potential deployment in
China's 3G market is Agilent Technologies. Agilent already has an established
presence in China and is building a new research and development center in
Beijing. A December 24th report on Chinadaily.com says: "the Beijing centre will
develop modeling and simulation software tools to enhance the design of 3G
(third-generation) wireless devices and components, including TD-SCDMA (time
division synchronous code division multiple access)." The report quotes Guy
Sene, vice president of Agilent Technologies.
A December 2002 research report on the "China Telecom's market from CLSA
Emerging Markets says: "implementing TD-SCDMA could mean savings of hundreds of
millions of dollars in royalty fees." The report says by eliminating European or
American wireless company royalty fees, domestic Chinese wireless vendors will
be positioned to be more competitive, if the technology becomes proven.
CLSA Emerging Markets goes onto say there will be "300 million mobile
subscribers China in 2005." And technological development isn't stopping with
China's bid to develop its own 3G standard.
CLSA Emerging Markets goes onto say that China has already met with South Korea
and Japan about the 4G standard. Government and company officials of China,
South Korea and Japan will meet in Seoul in April to discuss details for the 4G
standard.
According to the CLSA report, NTT DoCoMo has conducted prototype tests with
download speeds of 100 Mbps, and upload speeds of 20 Mbps. Preliminary research
is being done of 5G wireless technology, which would enable voice, data, audio
and video traffic to travel even faster over mobile networks.

Li faces doubters in his 3G mobile bet
Jan 02, 2003 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Li
Ka-shing's Hutchison Whampoa plans to launch third-generation (3G) mobile
telephony services in nine countries. The company's first 3G services are
expected to begin in Italy and the UK in the first quarter of 2003. However, in
the past Li has been prepared to abandon business enterprises that have failed
to live up to expectations. It remains possible that he will do eventually do so
with 3G. Hutchison aims to make its UK and Italian 3G services break-even by
2005, in terms of EBITDA. However, rival telcos have failed to find a sufficient
market for 3G in countries such as Japan, and Nomura has estimated that
Hutchison will need at least 5.4 million 3G subscribers in the UK in order to
make a positive return on its investment in the technology by 2010.
