China's Self Developed 3G to Come into Use by 2004

BEIJING, Jan 08, 2003 (SinoCast via COMTEX) -- Datang Mobile Telecom expressed
on January 2, 2003 that its third generation mobile communications standard
called TD-SCDMA was under testing, and would be put into use by 2004. Datang
Telecom is the owner of TD-SCDMA.

The TD-CDMA may become a rival of Europe's WCDMA and Qualcomm's CDMA2000.
(TD-SCDMA: Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiplex Address, WCDMA:
Wideband Code Division Multiplex Address, CDMA: Code Division Multiplex Address)

Li Shihe, director of the Technology Department of Datang Mobile Telecom, says,
"The TD-SCDMA will be put into commercial operation by 2004."

The schedule of TD-SCDMA is dependent on when will China Telecom and China
Mobile receive the 3G license, because the State Government will choose one of
them to adopt TD-SCDMA.

Li Shihe adds that many international telecom carriers are testing the
technology, but he refuges to express if TD-SCDMA is compatible with WCDMA. The
TD-SCDMA and WCDMA are based on same technology. Datang Mobile Telecom will in
2003 infuse US$ 120 million on TD-SCDMA, and its German partner Siemens AG also
plans to invest US$ 50 million.
