Li faces doubters in his 3G mobile bet

Jan 02, 2003 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Li
Ka-shing's Hutchison Whampoa plans to launch third-generation (3G) mobile
telephony services in nine countries. The company's first 3G services are
expected to begin in Italy and the UK in the first quarter of 2003. However, in
the past Li has been prepared to abandon business enterprises that have failed
to live up to expectations. It remains possible that he will do eventually do so
with 3G. Hutchison aims to make its UK and Italian 3G services break-even by
2005, in terms of EBITDA. However, rival telcos have failed to find a sufficient
market for 3G in countries such as Japan, and Nomura has estimated that
Hutchison will need at least 5.4 million 3G subscribers in the UK in order to
make a positive return on its investment in the technology by 2010.
