The Relief Series
Ever felt that there have been times when you could have done with some help but didn’t want to bother or worry anyone? Maybe you have thought that it wasn’t that big a deal but some information might have been helpful? The Trust’s Staff Advice and Liaison Service (SALS) can now offer you help and advice without needing to speak to anyone. SALS is able to offer a series of web-based self-help programmes called the ‘Relief Series’. You can access it at your own convenience and once you have logged on for the first time, you will have your own individual login and password. This means that everything remains completely confidential.
The Relief programmes are designed to help you to understand and manage a range of common problems. They can teach you well established skills and techniques to identify, motivate, monitor and self-manage for conditions such as Anxiety, Depression, Stress and Insomnia. It also offers an online forum so that you can ask questions, see how others have found the programme, seek technical support if you have problems and offer your support to other users. They can be accessed via http://www.wmas.calmyou.com Use the activation code ‘wmasSALS’ to enter your chosen programme and create your own unique log-in and password. Please note: the generic log-in is case sensitive. Just click on the SALS logo on the front page of the intranet and follow the links. These are free and available to all staff. If use of the programmes raises other issues that you would like to discuss, please feel free to contact a Confidential Advisor on 01384 215 880.

A Computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy program.
People in Northern Ireland can receive a new treatment for depression and anxiety known as Beating
the Blues. The computer-based programme helps those with mild or moderate conditions. It offers an
alternative to prescribing anti-depressants, and people with anxiety and depression will now have the
choice of using this self-help tool. The National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE)
recommended Beating the Blues® as a treatment option for all people seen with mild or moderate
depression [Feb 2006]. Access is available through your GP.

Depression and anxiety are extremely common. One in every five people are affected at some time in their lives. Beating the Blues is an easy to use self-help computer programme. Based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), it is a new way of helping people learn to cope with anxiety and depression. It works by teaching practical, lifelong skills to help them feel better and stay better. Results are quick and extremely affective if people work through the programme and carry out weekly projects in between sessions.

Computer-Aided Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic literature search in order to assess effectiveness of computer- and internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (CCBT). METHODS Medline, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and PsycINFO were searched for relevant articles. Only RCTs were included. Effect sizes were calculated and quality of studies was assessed. RESULTS 16 studies were retrieved and included. Effect sizes depended on therapist time involvement and control group intervention (waiting list vs. active control group) and ranged between 0.0 and 1.1. CONCLUSIONS CCBT provides an effective and potentially cost-effective interventional strategy for depressive disorders. Effects of no and minimal contact therapies are confounded with conditions of control groups and need further investigation. While patients with Major Depression seem to benefit from computer-based therapy with regular therapist contact, it remains unclear whether unattended self-help interventions over the internet are effective for this patient population. However, these interventions are effective in patients with mild to moderate depressive symptomatology. CCBT may serve as a first step of treatment within stepped care approaches and may help to offer treatment to individuals in remote areas and to decrease barriers to seek psychiatric care caused by stigma perception.

Campaign for psychological therapies
Psychological therapies such as counselling and psychotherapy can be very effective for treating mental health conditions. However, they are not always easily available on the NHS and some people can wait years for treatment.
Although the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme has improved the situation, far too many people are still not getting the treatment that they need, when they need it. Mind's new report, We need to talk: Getting the right therapy at the right time, backs up this claim with new evidence from over 500 service users who shared their experiences with us.
The Government has said it will increase access to talking therapies. We must make sure they keep that promise. Mind has led the work of the We Need to Talk coalition to produce this report, which makes an unanswerable case for the Government to do more to ensure that a wide range of evidence-based therapies are available to all that need them within 28 days of referral.
What we are fighting for
A wide range of evidence-based psychological therapies should be made available to all.
Therapy should be available within 28 days of requesting referral.
The IAPT programme should be completed as planned.

‘REEACT’ trials depression treatments
Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is effective at alleviating symptoms of depression, but access to CBT within the NHS is limited and often has long waiting lists. Recently, therapists have designed computer-led therapy programmes which incorporate CBT principles which can be made available through the internet. The REEACT study is a large multicentre randomised controlled trial investigating the clinical and cost effectiveness of computerised Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (cCBT) for depression being led by Professor Simon Gilbody at HYMS. The study is investigating two cCBT programmes, one which is freely available on the internet and one which is a licensed product which incurs a fee per user. Participants are randomly assigned to receive one of the cCBT packages, together with usual GP care, or may be assigned to a control group who receive usual GP care alone. All participants are followed up at set time points for 2 years Continued on page 2...
Depression causes misery to many people and is a major health problem in the UK: we know that at any one time more than one in ten people in Great Britain are suffering from some form of depression. The majority of people with depression receive care from their GP and rarely see a specialist, although many would also like to receive a ‘talking treatment’ (counselling or psychotherapy). There is a growing evidence base to suggest that therapist-led Cognitive
REEACT trials
...Continued from page 1 to monitor the severity of their depression as well as other aspects of health, such as quality of life. A concurrent economic evaluation is also taking place to investigate the cost-effectiveness of providing people with cCBT. REEACT has been recruiting since August 2009 and is running in just over 100 GP practices across four study centres based at the Universities of York, Bristol, Manchester and Sheffield. To date, more than 600 people with depression have been enrolled in the study and the team hopes to hit its recruitment target of 690 by the end of the year, earlier than originally planned. The qualitative aspect of the study is now about to begin, led by the research team at the University of Manchester. This is to assess the acceptability of computerised therapy to patients, from a user perspective, and GPs, as potential referrers to this type of treatment. Due to the expected early completion of recruitment to the original REEACT trial a further study, REEACT-2, is currently being developed to investigate the effect of providing telephone support to people accessing cCBT. Evidence suggests that people can find it difficult to engage with the cCBT programmes, so by providing additional support we may be able to enhance any potential health benefits. For further information about the study, contact trial support officer Gwen Brierley (gwen.brierley@york.ac.uk).

The annual cost of social and economic inequality in England is £56–58 billion, with those living in poorest neighbourhoods dying seven years earlier than people living in the richest neighbourhoods.82 The country is facing significant financial austerity following the recession. Studies show that health tends to get worse during times of recession, with the poorest affected the most. In the UK, inequality between the rich and the poor is continuing to widen.

JUST A MATTER OF TIME!!!
We call for action to ensure that National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommended treatments and interventions are universally available. In particular, we hope that the Government’s commitment to psychological therapies will lead to the extension of the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme from its current focus on depression and anxiety to offer choice of evidence-based therapy to people with severe mental illness, to children, older people, people from diverse communities, prisoners, and those with long-term health problems.
