The annual cost of social and economic inequality in England is £56–58 billion, with those living in poorest neighbourhoods dying seven years earlier than people living in the richest neighbourhoods.82 The country is facing significant financial austerity following the recession. Studies show that health tends to get worse during times of recession, with the poorest affected the most. In the UK, inequality between the rich and the poor is continuing to widen.
