PYR churning? Spinning top.... indecision.. the book I have suggests the next day's trading will move in the direction of the opening price...
TKO looks interesting..
Volume..
My buy signal (if someone asked me to take a stab) would have been Sep 8/9th..
What the hell.. grub 69.. // Kastelco..
Kastelco..
FWIW: Was watching Market Call (Mon - Oil & Gas) someone asked about Paramount - although most of his ratings were hold, and a couple of buys, he felt this was a sell - mentioned some production problems. Didn't see him before - from the US - ahh.. he was so/so..
B
HA! But I sure give Smith a run for his money... in my mind..
bluke
Thanks Kastelco...
Only if I can rub your lucky foot....
Well although I am holding my breath and hoping the rest of my junk moves (hey even some life from the likes of FCO no less) - for NGX and any other new plays I enter, I am going to try my darnedest (had to check the spelling on that one) to bail at a reasonable level this time - give them some breathing room - but not just let them drop.
My view of the 40%+ losses in a bunch of the stuff I own (most have rebounded to 30% losses; but INM and CPT are at 57%) - isn't so much on the stress but the other side - depression (sans drugs). Well I have said what I have about that stuff.
Tonight's read here on this board has been a hoot - I don't dislike any single person who posts here - which is better than most boards where you have the usual ass (unless some of you think I fit that bill....).
The only LT stocks I have are either (A) Doing very very well (SU; AE etc); or (B) So frigging down in the dumps and there is no point to sell. A true LT to me is that I plan on buying .. and accumulating over many years (eg quality stuff like L; GE; WMT etc - but not now) - and I own no LT today.
I know Amarksp loves the PM's longterm (and/or deals a lot with the numbers) - but I agree with FP - they are cyclical and/or speculative IMO (speaking of course of the juniors mostly - whatever they are..<g>). Unfortunately for me I got side swiped but I can't see holding any of those LT. If AGI shot up to $5 and I still owned it - ABSOLUT LUCKY FOR ME!.
Funny seeing FP's MOMO views vs. amarksp's LT views. (thanks!)
(And thanks for your latest FP - will watch LCC)
Good luck with KBR mate.. and cheers!

(Probably speed down Yonge street on Sunday and take the tube from Finch - allows me to endulge a bit downtown... before I drive home // though I might ask if Kirby49 wants to ride with me - but I fear if I drink too much, he might hear me tell him some stock picks - INM; CPT; GOZ.. you know.. the good stuff)
I heard he has butt implants..
Coffee: Juan Valdez leaves Columbia for Manhattan
New York, NY, Sep. 28 (UPI) -- Columbian coffee bean growers began an effort Tuesday to boost income; opening their own coffee shop in Manhattan.
The move by the National Federation of Colombian Coffee represents a bid to brush up its image and tap a new revenue stream, the Daily News reported Tuesday.
"The federation is the only body who can claim they bring coffee from the tree to the cup," the federation's president Juan Esteban Orduz said.
"More than competing against anybody, there is space in the market for 560,000 farmers to earn money from the retail market (that) they need to improve quality of schools, roads, and hospitals."
New York's 2,000-square-foot store, which can seat about 200 customers, will be considered the flagship of an eventual 300 Juan Valdez stores worldwide by 2003.
And then he takes Berlin....
Anyahoo, nice ass!
On a related story -
Starbucks to boost coffee prices in U.S.
SEATTLE (AP) — You'll soon be forking over an extra 11 cents for a gentrified java.
Starbucks (SBUX) says it will raise the average price of its beverages by 11 cents at 4,500 stores in North America Oct. 6 because of increases in the cost of coffee and sugar.
In its announcement Monday, the company did not reveal what the average price of individual beverages would be after the increase. Currently, a 12-ounce Starbucks latte ranges from $2.25 in Minnesota to $3 in New York City.
The price hike — first since August 2000 — will amount to an estimated 3% for all the company's drinks, Smith Barney analyst Mark Kalinowski said. (Related: Starbucks joins effort to help coffee growers.)
The company had announced previously that it would raise prices by the end of the year, saying coffee prices have risen 36% and sugar prices 39% the past year.
McAdams Wright Ragen analyst Dan Geiman said he does not believe the increase will hurt business: "It's 11 cents," he said. "That's not a huge amount when you're already paying a few dollars-plus for your beverage."
The higher prices do not apply at Seattle's Best Coffee, a smaller chain owned by Starbucks, company spokesman Alan Hilowitz said.

Sorry Kirby.. I read this now - this AM I was still with my 7X8" visual.. later in the AM I finally got back my 21" Viewsonic from the shop..
As I said I am not 100% I am going. But ahhhh shucks.. I would feel bad if you went and didn't see me.
Last time they had in no where mans land - Harborfront or something - well at least it is a the MCC.
So Kastelco you decided yet? If so - your turn to buy me coffee or what???
Probably leaning now to go..
(Jeez everytime I see your handle I think "kirby69" - hmm.. of course that is my lucky number.. and in my dreams - but of course!)

AAPL - JUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!
HA! Saw their new gear. Though I think they excel on design - funny how no one dares try to "look" like the iPOD, their latest machine - to also "look like the iPOD" - I dunno if I like the Marthaish coordination stance.
Gotta keep it coming with new new new new new. It'll make Michael Dell pull his lustrous hair out. And as Prisoness Martha would say, that would be a very good thing.
BTW: I noticed a recall from Lexmark and that affected Dell - I know they were branding their own gear - is it true that they are doing exclusive Lexmark or any rebranding of HP? (Lexmark is shit). Though I can't say my next inkjet will be HP, it won't be Epson either.
Back on topicl.. I have a BW article on a new unit - think it is from MSFT - with the media stuff. The problem is that they are heavier and of course suck batteries. Hmmm.. if they market it as "Portable Porn"... well.. saynomore saynomore nudgenudge winkwink...
But I am still itching for an iPOD - nothing out there comes close. 40GB for $549CDN so the price is right...
Anyahoo.. good seeing AAPL doing so well...
Cheers Roni..

Nicer touch if once you submit or hit preview it would have removed the http for you. Really a pain in the ass.
Esp when you add [Qurl]blahblah.com[/Qurl][Qtag]Site[/Qtag] -- and then try to edit it - fails..
Geez Suncor is up $1.40 today.. to $40.80 glad I still have some.
AQI is finally moving upward - wondering if anyone has any views on that one? I still own a bit (trying to still recoup). Noticed AGI backed off (as it seems to do when everything else seems to be moving forward).
S
So what brings you to my country?
(Born and raised in Richmans Hill.. myself and sons born in that there same hospital)
Funny - everytime I think of Alberta I think of SCTV when they are going from the Maritimes to Montreal to Toronto.. looking for work..
Lots of jobs in Toronto..
Garth and Gord (surgeon and lawyer) drive to Toronto from the Maritimes in search of lawyering and doctoring jobs. They pick up Fiona, a nuclear physicist, in Quebec, and run over a woodchuck being filmed for Hinterland Who's Who. They arrive in Toronto full of hope, but Garth's pal says things are slow and there are no jobs after all. They go to Yonge Street, where they meet Alice. Fiona finds a job setting up pins in a bowling alley. Gord gets Alice pregnant. They go to Yonge Street to think. Alice leaves Gord. They decide head out to Alberta.
OT: My friend was going out with this girl for years - and she wanted to go on a trip to France - so she went (not sure who with but not with him). She comes back and dumps him - tells him she is tired of small town "Maple" (now that she has seen the world.. har har). Anyways, she lives somewhere else or something and then a few years later when visiting there she sees him flipping pancakes at the Maple Pancake Fest.. can't get much smaller than that. Anyways, he lives over in Scarberia (the bad part where the cars either have bullet proof windows or no windows at all.. chuckle).
Can't recall (based on all the emails) - you going this Sunday and meeting everyone? I haven't decided 100% what I am doing. If it was this time last year, no brainer.. but ... The names are not familiar to me so I was less inclined (far less even to actually break bread with them). (If any part wants to go -- I would hope to see you though)..
Probably more inclined to see Frank in Edmonton actually.. perhaps in a few years...
Cheers Kirby..

Thanks for the pics Frank. Yeah the trail is pretty nice..
I was walking in the outback of Richmond Hill (nykk nykk) - but seriously - I have a hospital kitty korner to my home and behind that going west (not east but ouest) there is a trail there. So I took my youngest one day and was going happy along when I came to stairs. Yet the place I entered and one I just past had a ramp to get out - so back I went. Crazy.
Right behind me we have something too - trail along The Don - suppose it is the start of Don River (aka Don Valley Parkinglot) without the cars..
Thanks!

Since you are quoting Genesis -- and that is Mr. Phillip Collins ... I will flip back to Sir Peter Gabriel's ..
Harlequin from Nursery Cryme 1971
Came the night a mist dissolved the trees
And in the broken light colours fly, fading by.
Pale and cold as figures fill the glade
Grey is the web they spin, on and on, and on and on.
Through the flame still summer lingers on
Though her pictures soon shatter.
All, always the same,
But there appears in the shades of dawning,
Though your eyes are dim,
All of the pieces in the sky.
There was once a harvest in this land.
Reap from the turquoise sky, harlequin, harlequin.
Dancing round three children fill the glade,
Theirs was the laughter in the winding stream, and in between.
Close your talk, the picture fades again,
From the flames in the firelight.
All, always the same,
But there appears in the shades of dawning,
Though your eyes are dim,
All of the pieces in the sky.
All, all is not lost,
And light appears in the shade of dawning
When your eyes can see
Order the pieces, put them back, put them back.
You are mixing URLs with cookies. The basic site (not "paths") are stored in the cookie file along with the codes/entries. Akin to the "SCREEN DRIVER" - where you pass the app and field. Whether it was in development and then moved to live is irrelevant - since I didn't have to re-login to the system. The cookie was stored only with the SILICONINVESTOR (regardless of where it went on the actual site) along with the codes.
Think registry (the app writes its own keys and then populates with data - in our case the browser writes the keys of the site and then the codes sent).

Think - why do you or I care about this - when we should be spending quality time with our kids (Tennis this PM) or finding out how we can get a Mac on our desk without having to work for the man...
Or think why the absolutely the same generic label Loratadine alergy med. 24hr 10mg x24 tablets - is sold at Loblaw for $3.74.. $6.97 at Wal-Mart and $10.99 at Pharma Plus.. (can Pharma plus be the new ShoppersScamMart? with Air Miles?) (WORSE - I think Loblaw had an "unadvertised sale"; too bad I am not sure how good they work - otherwise I would have took them all esp with a Nov 06 expiry)
Fortunately I keep my feathers numbered - for just such an emergency.

Don't think so... think carbs friend..
When I first went to the new site, it didn't work. I had to login - since then it worked fine. I assumed the cookie codes were different.
When I reviewed my Mozilla today (preferences; privacy; cookie manager) - I had cookies like this: (some were .siliconinvestor.com and others were similar but started with www)
SI_CUSTOMIZE
go2login

I then erased all; relogged into SI and now all the SI cookies appear to be starting with SI: (and only are www.silicon..)

Season 2 - Ep17. For Want of a Boot (K-417)
January 12, 1974
Written by Sheldon Keller
Directed by Don Weis
Guest Stars: Michael Lerner, Suzanne Zenor, Johnny Kaymer
A riotous episode in which Hawkeye will do anything to get a new pair of boots. In order to get Zale to get him some, he must get an appointment for Zale with Futterman, the camp dentist, who will only do it if Henry will give him a pass to Tokyo, and Henry will only grant the pass if Houlihan will get
off his back, which she will do only if the guys throw a party for Frank's birthday with a cake, and Radar will only help get the cake if he gets a date with Nurse Murphy, who will only date someone with a hair dryer, and Klinger won't give up the hair dryer unless he gets a section 8 (and Frank won't sign).
The deal falls through, much to the chagrin of Hawkeye.
It is temporary since many folks don't know their passwords....as I recall so they can log in to the new SI.. amazingly ....
I won't ask how they log in when they don't know their password.

Guffaw!!
As I commented on SI, perhaps externally you can find something to run the pool?
Found this link
http://directory.webguest.com/Business/Investing/Games
Interesting - The Virtual Stock Exchange. But overall, other than running a pool, there are some neat sites on the list.
Hope you can come up with something CD....
Sexically yours...
Blake
BTW: (if I were you) Do yourself a HUGE FAT FAVOR. If you are struggling to add people's picks in retroactively - say SCREW IT - find a great site to run it - review it yourself.. and perhaps in a couple of weeks announce a new one - then get people to go - register for spam and sign up their picks. At least it will be formally laid out, rules setup properly and everyone can have fun -- not only that -- I am sure they offer "trades" and wrapped rules around that.
I ran a pool once - the one that came with the Toronto Star - we emulated it at work (not to mention that my wife came in first, and I came in second.. amoung 20 or so people - Yogen Fruz (yeah the brothers were crooked then too I am sure) and Air Canada did it for her.. but that is another story). Anyways - that was easy since the number of picks was limited - but to fart around with picks out of every cubby hole.. not worth the energy - automate it!!!
Funny (and yes I read your reply too Kastelco) - I go there and (well I suffer from crappysmallmonitoridis.com) - like the fonts are huge for the peoplemark. I go to options and can't see anything for it to adjust. You go to profile and see your password in plain view.
Further, when I go to any of the old SI links I had before, including those posted here on Friday, they all fail. Now I haven't checked but - have the actual message ID#'s changed? or just part of the URL is different? Part of me is surprised that they didn't receive the old "link" and internally adjust to the "new" (though if the mesgids are totally out of wack, well nothing you can do).
Well merging the two or not - I agree with you all (including amarksp) - do they actually make enough from people buying "both" services to warrant the two systems? I mean if there is very little "duplicate" subscriptions (and can they even determine that really?) I agree it makes no sense in having two systems (except I am sure there are turf wars somewhere).
Further, I am actually scratching my head why they didn't just grab the entire iHUB system and convert all the data to that version? Still run the sites independently if they want but at least both systems would be equal and any enhancements could roll out in tandem (perhaps a few weeks off each time).
Kastelco - so you love conversions then? HA! At the place I use to work at there are actually people that do that for a living. Not sure about your past - but I was stuck doing the odd one here and there - not pleasant - even though the tools side was always about the same, the underlying subsystems all were different. My boss typically tried to keep the conversion prices high enough so that the most we did usually was just convert masters. That works ok for some parts but not for the likes of the GL/accounting data.
But to actually go to work on a rainy Monday morning knowing that you are going to begin working on a new conversion project today - jeez - someone hand me a mop or one of those fancy blue shirts at wal-mart.. bad enough for me to actually go somewhere and not do conversions..
As for me...
Two accounts with AGI doing well; MR has a little more life on Friday..(only down about 28% now!!!! ye-haaaaaaaaaaaaaa!) and AQI too.. sorry I am so disinterested in the gold stuff that I really can't bring myself to jump into anything (esp when AQI for example, is moving mere pennys on light volume). Thinking of passing on next week's Mining conference - though if I miss it I will never know how all the gurus think Gold will surpass 500-600 and beyond...
My wife still owns some SU from $26; there was a play around 36 between Aug 26-Aug 31) that I missed - but thats ok.
Trusts doing well (AE/Viking) - esp some good performance gains on the Cequel/Progress merger/trust spin off. The PGX_U.TO is up about 15% plus payout.
CPST - shaking my head - tis all...

Anyahoo.. yes that reminds me to review some QQQ Puts? Maybe.. (they are to protect me from something - but I think they would protect me from myself)
I suppose if RRI is "RRI it looks to be rolling over", please don't tell me what CPST is doing. I can handle only one hurricane at a time.
Actually the graph - presented in your format (longer range) - sort of showing a failed cup and handle?
Will have to review the SAR stuff..
thanks
O
Yeah that is interesting. See RRI lately? A base forming for most of September...
.. save today - but of course!
Anyways, just interesting.
And some life of late with AQI (steady volume increase this week) and PYR..
Well as stated before, I would love to have Apple gear all over the place... as Kastelco mentioned - except for me the only problem is $$$. Well I am still toying with getting an iPOD though..
Anyways, the 21" Viewsonic I have is great (70lbs?) and was a short neck design (about the depth of a 17" - which added to the cost - $1200). Most cheapo 17" CRTs I have seen at Costco are deeper.
One thing that I have seen is a radical downgrade of warranties - from 3yrs to 90 days! (TVs too) But reviewing some of the LCD offerings from Viewsonic - 20" is $1300 and the 18"/19" (of which I would get - but are still a little pricy - $8-900s) are also 3years (even the one 17" I saw). I am hoping my repairs are minimal but probably would look at a Viewsonic again if they are willing to back their stuff like that. I aways pay for those with a CC so I get the extra year too - and 4 years is better than 2 if you are paying that much.
Different topic - but still on short necks - looks like Bush and Kerry are running neck and neck at around 46% each.. I am waiting to see the debates - could be a big decider this year. And although the VP's never count, I am still leaning toward hair and teeth helping the Dems.
B
SUF: Years ago I had a nice run on SUF all the way up to $12 from around the $5-6s. I think I ended up selling half and then lost a little on the way down. Oh well.
Anyways, just thought I would mention I added some Acclaim Energy today (had a new issue @14.25). Cool - I got the alert on my phone; was able to place three expressions, was ready to get the 4th and boom - closed - within about 15minutes of the notice.
As I type I am thinking of you looking at your beautiful Apple monitor.. my 21" Viewsonic was taken to the shop today. Now I am using a 14 year old POS - which has 1" black borders (for show I am sure) and I am enjoying the massive real estate of 7x8". Unreal. Beside me on our other PC - basically the same junk - perhaps a little wider.
Chuckle!
B
Nothing to say anyone? Humor?
Animated GIF
I went to a school without those things. Another school, which was just beyond the boundry did.
Anyways, the last year I was at my school (Gr8) we actually walked to the other school - and one day a week (or every other week) for almost the year, we had shop class. For 4 weeks, during that period, instead of shop we had "home ec". Sewing a football (thanks mom!) and making pizza is what I remember.
When "home ec" is optional, it is considered "sissy girl stuff". But once you make it mandatory, the whole ballgame changes.
Bayview High school was mainly tech - shop; electrical; auto; drafting. Meanwhile, other schools don't have half of that. Why? Something wrong with that picture. But it isn't "little of this or that". Has to be LOTS of tech classes. And that is way overkill.
Balance is something most don't think of.
sob
Sort of along the lines of Kastelco - on the "extras" that are overlooked (swimming; skating etc). Unfortunately schools here don't have the $$ to have such facilities and therefore the parents have to augment. Our 5 year old spent a year in Tae Kwon Do and is in tennis lessons now. Skating is due up this fall. At this point, I don't see any one thing as dominant - just a smattering until he can develop an interest in "something".
Basic math, English, geography, history amongst others come to mind as “musts”
Basic math? Ahem. Not good enough.
Anyways my high school years were wasted - they gave me "options" and I took the wrong ones. In my world each kid would take the following mandatory classes:
Year of electrickery, couple of years of auto, home ec, law, accounting, economics, (savings and/or investment course), typing, phsycology and relationships (personal and business). And the list is based on what I think of NOW - I know there are far more.
The bloody system is geared toward:
(A) Ensuring you go to university or sweep floors - no middle ground (pumping gas and being a checkout girl are all out - due to automation)
(B) Ensuring you take (now its 1?) French so you can read both sides of the coupons.
Some might object when I say "Calculus; Algebra and Trig" - 3 courses in my day. All a waste - I think perhaps ONE of the three should be mandatory, but they should have bulked up on some of the above.
But high school, IMO, based on the "mandatories" DOES NOT prepare you for life - and that is criminal. 3 "arts". Cripes. Cancel that junk. By the time you get to high school - they should start at 8:30 and for 1 hour the entire school should be doing basic exercises - days of weights; walking; running etc.
Well at least I know where I screwed up so at least I can guide my sons into better choices. And when they get homework, zero tolerance on the TV. I would have done far better without the tube.
Sadly I didn't take much of the above - and I have suffered. How far can I go with lithography? Knowing about transmission over high-tension power lines? Drafting? Useless - all of it. And no one "advised" me - as long as I took the proper mandatories who is to say?? And all the mandatories were advanced - had to be - "incase" I "wanted" to go to university.
My wife (she is the educated one - I barely finised hi-skoo) can't believe how I went all those years to high school and never took biology. Biology!!! How basic a course is that? Well we had a choice - "physics" OR "biology".
Didn't care much about bi-ology..
Didn't know nothin bout his-tory..
..
..
oh what a wonderful education system it coulda woulda shoulda be.
I could go on for hours - but there is so much out there I do not agree with. And people just accept it. Even yourself - you say "history" - define that. What period of history is important? Is it critical that I know about pelt salesmen floating down the St. Laurence? Or perhaps I should know more about the entire world history. I know ZERO about the world. I probably know more about American history than Canadian. And that isn't right. But being taught about Canadian history exclusively - excuse my Quebecois - jeez what colossal a waste of time.
Want to know the state of the future - read the stats on obesity and diabetes amoungst children. CHILDREN. And watch the fine inspiring scholars in the US, on Jaywalk - who figure the earth goes around the moon; the US fought Canucks in World War II; and have troubles naming their current VP Cheney off a picture. It is brutal - and don't fear - the above answers were from soon-to-be-teachers. Yes a fine lot.
Sick of all of it.
Signed Kastelco. (HA HA HA HA).
Blake.
PS: The best of course is that most think the VP is actually Al Gore.. but that's another story....
JOF? Symbol? What is WTIC by the way? Newbie wants to know..

Yes Spanish is the way to go IMO. Remember about 25% of the US speaks Spanish. (Yes there is a world outside of N/A.. but..). Well a good percentage worldwide speaks it too.
I am not so gung ho with taking French as a "class" - unless they are in emersion. I was taught french from grade 2 to grade 8; then opted to take it from 9-10. Of course you would never guess that.. can't speak much of it. Either the interest was not there or the method of teaching was not correct.
I remember watching this french guy (with the painted face - no idea his name). They would show the skit in parts - and then review in English. Then they would show the complete skit in French. I watched that at home. Not to say I learned anything from that - but they never showed that in school. I think they should have.
Anyways two of my favorites..
J'ne pas parler français aujourd'hui.
et
Je me souviens.
Our school board seems to offer free language lessons; but it is ashame that Spanish isn't part of the curriculum early on (as you mention) -- oh right, because French and English are the only "offical" languages.
WAY WAY OT: And when did Quebec sign the constitution? Lets not go there..
Just in case, I figured I would ask now.
Do you have room for four more? Just need one queen bed is all - my wife and sons can sleep on that. I pretty much stay curled up on one side of the bed - I am sure you and your wife won't mind...
... and make sure you have plenty of eggs, bacon and sausage - being on the low carb diet, I like a filling breakfast..

Michael Vaughan interviews Phil Edmonston - and asks him five questions...

Anyways a good feel about his thoughts on the "BIG 8" (craps?); hybrids and how the asian car makers have "pulled back on quality". I was at the local lake and saw two town hybrids. The "parking authority" employees got out their car, leaving the engines running for like 15m. Sure it is hybrid - who knows how much was electric and how much was gas - but DUH.. wouldn't turning off the engine save $$ too?!! You are not bloody cops.. except in your minds.
FWIW: I read in Edmonston's book about a secret warranty with my car. Had to do with the gas tank (LOL!). When it is full and you stop the car quickly you would hear and feel the gas swooshing in the tank. Anyways, the secret warranty was to replace the tank with one that had more baffles. I mentioned the issue to service, and a tech found the "bulletin" and they did the work.
BTW: Interesting conversation lately going on here.. great posts. Thanks all!!

Oh great, now the cons are going to control our energy huh?
"Professors Nowotny and Sorrell say that with appropriate government support and financial backing, their technology could help Australia become part an OPEC of the future."
Reminds me of a Hollywood production - Cape Fear Redux...
Interesting nonetheless.
BTW Kastelco, along with the cord, do you have enough candles?

ZDNet: Why SP2 deserved every shred of the scrutiny
I don't often post these kinds of articles but this one caught my eye. A darn good (and long) article on SP2 for XP.
Fun for the whole family - talks about Linux and Mac - revolving around Windows SP2 for XP.
Some excerpts:
Desktop Linux is a different story . Though Linux is clearly in the game, especially on the server side, it has a way to go before it's a Mac-like workstation alternative for neophytes like Jamison. Nor might it yet be for those who consider themselves proficient at exercises in networking, printer sharing, and systems administration by virtue of their exposure to the way Windows does these things. I run a pair of Red Hat 9 systems and, although they've proven to be ideal at hosting Web and database servers, using either of these boxes to share a printer or hard drive for my Windows and Mac boxes has not been so simple. After spending countless hours with how-to's and in Linux forums studying the usage of technologies, commands, and options such as SAMBA, CHMOD, CUPS, Linux's built-in firewall, and Hewlett-Packard's open source printer driver for the HP DeskJet 5550 (that I selected on the basis of its perfect compatibility with Linux), my "Windows users" (wife, kids) still can't press the print button with predictable results. In the name of predictability and fewer "help desk calls," I've gone to Plan B and have connected the printer to a Windows machine.
Try explaining any of this to Jamison the neophyte who just wants things to work. Or try explaining it to Mac users for whom things routinely "just work." Half of them will laugh because they've never heard of anything so arcane; the other half will laugh because they know what the first half don't: the Mac is doing the arcane stuff, only in an incredibly user friendly fashion. If you're logged into a Mac without administrative privileges and attempt to do something that requires administrative privileges, the Mac in many cases simply asks you for the administrative user ID and password. In fact, just to be sure, even if you're already logged in with administrative rights, OS X still asks for the administrative credentials for some tasks. How easy is that?. Notwithstanding the way the OS X does it, perhaps BJ Brock hits the nail on the head: "Why should anyone have to limit their rights just to protect their PC? 'Run As' alternatives are just another time-consuming work around for an inadequate OS."
One horse that I've beaten nearly to death in my columns and blogs, (and promise to put out of its misery here) is the new Windows Firewall in SP2. With no outbound blocking and some back doors that a hacker could drive a Mack truck through, this "improvement" fails the value statements of the TCI on virtually every level. In fact, I now regret calling it better than no firewall at all. To the extent that the firewall and the Security Center (a central dashboard that's supposed to give us an accurate reflection of our systems' defenses) can be so easily tampered with and users can so easily be misled into a false sense of security, Windows Firewall is worse than nothing.
Microsoft's response went on to say that "In order for an attacker to spoof the Windows Security Center, he or she would have to have local administrator rights on the computer." Hackers inherit such rights when the users of the machines they're attacking are logged in with administrative rights. On this point, we've already established two types of users: First, there's a class of Windows users that log in with administrative rights because they don't know any better; second, there's a class of Windows users whose applications break unless they're logged in with administrative rights. According to my sources, Microsoft's own tests revealed that limited user accounts (LUAs) were incompatible with more than 50 percent of the applications tested.

Happy Labor Day Booze Question to All!
Years ago I acquired the taste for tequila. Then I was introduced to a Long Island Iced Tea.
Shortly after (mid 90's) I was able to buy a pre-mixed version of the tea. Except, it did not include Tequila. A few years later, a new mix came out and that did include tequila - they continued to sell the non-tequila version.
Well a couple of months ago, I was back in the liquor store and for whatever reason, the tequila version does not exist anymore.
So the question I pose to you all..
Can anyone see a reason why I should not be able to create my own mix with just the base liquors? None of them "expire" so to speak, so I figure I am safe.
The mix is comprised of:
Tequila
Rum
Vodka
Gin
Triple Sec

Happy Labor day all!
